PROGRAMSYNDICATION IN EUROPE ON ITS WAY!From the various phonecalls and letters we receive it becomes clear that more and moreEuropean programdirectors are interested in the syndication possibilities both on thebuying as well as the selling side. There are a great number of Eurostations producingveryinteresting programs for both pop and rock music and they are just preparing these showsfor their own (often local) market. They are only just starting to discover the potential ofselling these shows in other countries. When you have a good show. especially when it is aregular one. why not translate it for other markets? You only need to make samplecassettes to test the interest from other European countries and/or even the United States.
Especially in the U.K. there are already anumber of stations quite active in this field(Capital Radio!) but in the most othercountries this is still rust a very smallissue. This is partly due to the fact thatmost stations with enough money to pro-duce quality programming are govern-ment -owned and do not often have thecommercial departments agressiveenough to sell their programming. Youcan use Eurotipsheet to present theseshows to your collegues. Please informus about them.
ROUNDS RADIO EXPRESSTom Rounds has left behind his positionas President and CEO of ABC Water-mark, the syndicated radio productionand distribution company he co- foundedin 1970, to create Radio Express, a newcompany which will be the exclusive in-ternational distributor of all ABC Water-mark product.
While he continues to serve as Ex-ecutive Producer of his phenomenallysuccessful "American Top 40 with CaseyKasem." as well as "American CountryCountdown with Bob Kingsley,'' the movemarks a career triumph for Rounds - whotakes a big step closer to realizing adream.
"Radio is slowly reaching people inparts of the world that were previouslyconsidered to be inaccessible to Ameri-can -style radio," notes the pioneer whoseprograms already reach an estimated 40million listeners in the USA alone. -Thepotential worldwide communication thatcan result from the exchange of popularculture and popular music is profound. With Radio Express, we'll make it as easyas possible for broadcasters around theworld to get this information."
With a diverse catalogue that alsoincludes "The King Biscuit. Flower Hour,""Silver Eagle," "Supergroups In Concert,""GoldPicks," "Spotlight Specials," "Musi-cal!" and "Ringo's Yellow Submarine,"Radio Express has already begun dis-tribution in over 40 countries spread overfive continents, including such markets asJapan, France, Germany, Mexico, Peru,Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand,Malaysia and Thailand and to countlesslisteners via the Armed Forces Radio Net-work.
Rounds is particularly excited aboutthe not -too -distant possibility that RadioExpress product will be on the air in ThePeople's Republic of China, India, Burma,Pakistan and throughout the Middle Eastand South America - areas that have8
heretofore been virtually isolated fromcommercial radio programming.
Also playing an important part in theRadio Express game plan will be the im-portation of top quality foreign musicprogramming, While the ABC Watermarklibrary available for export is quite exten-sive. Rounds is actively seeking othersyndicated program acquisitions andnew production opportunities.
AVAILABLE PROGRAMSThere are some good new shows fromthe U.S. The radio networks WestwoodOne still have The Isle of Dreams Festivalavailable, a 12- hour concert extravagan-za with 24 of the top recording artists,Huey Lewis, Foreigner, Bryan Adams, El-ton John, The Cars. David Bowie andmany more. And there are new programsas well! Concerts from Midnight Oil, ChinaCrisis, Dan Hartman, Luther Vandrossand coming soon- Paul Young, Don Hen-ley, Tom Petty, Roger Waters, Cock Ro-bin and Joe Walsh. MEDIA NEWSThe ARD channel in Germany will havefrom January '86 on a new structure oftheir nighttime programming; pop andAOR will be programmed all night, classi-cal music wit get its share at 3am and anexperimental rock program will run from12 till 2 am ... some changes at BR(Baverischen Rundfunk) in Munchen; FritzEgner's popular program "Fritz And Hits"will continue, though under anothername: "Hithouse" and the "Rockit" prog-ram from Juergen Hermann is cancelledas of the 1st of October (although Her-mann will go on with his nightshow "SongBooks"). Send your media news, changes inprogramming and staff together with yourtips to us!
RADIO & RECORDSYou can read a lot more about availableUS programs in Radio & Records andwhilst on that subject we loved a smallstatement by their Lon Helton reading asfollows: Programming philosopies are likeopinions- everybody has one, and mostfolks are reluctant to change theirs. Isn't itamazing that in a business where theproduct users (listeners) react instantane-ously to changes in fads and fashionsthat those in a position to lead and shapethose reactions are often restricted fromdoing so by self-imposed philosophicalrigidity? Why is it so many prefer to followtried-and-true programming paths ratherthan respond to listener's needs throughformat finetuning and breaking newground with fresh ideas?

CORRESPONDENT REPORTS
LONDON CALLINGby Howard Marks
They all seem to be at it nowadays!! What you might ask, are they at ??Making comebacks of course. Dusty Springfield, Edwin Starr, ClarenceCarter, Chilites, Three Degrees & the delicious PP Arnold -who has justsigned to 10 Records. She has a Dexter Wansell produced single, whichis mixed by Nick Martinelli. Three Degrees are with Supreme Records, the label which gave us Princess.
If you are into pop trivia, like myself- check out the new book by AlanClayson, entitled "Call Up The Groups". The book is about the bands ofthe 60s, and well worth the money. Also very good is the biography onEric Clapton, which is in the shops now.
In the silly department this week, we ask should Roger Daltry recordthe old Dusty Springfield classic 'I Close My Eyes & Count To Ten'. Forhe has just signed to 10 Records, and released his new album & single:got the pun yet ... Roger is currently doing the promotional rounds. Alsoin the silly department this week, we ask radio jocks to think aboutplaying the new single from The Smiths, which is entitled 'The Boy WithThe Thorn In His Side', back to back with the old Kate Bush hit entitled'The Man With The Child In His Eyes'. We then ask you to backannounce both records one after the other. Confused yet? I know thatI'm !!!
Also very confusing at the moment, is the battle of the names. RadioOne D.J Dixie Peach must be extremely confused at the moment, to saythe least. If your name is John Smith, it is fair to assume that there areone or two other people around with the same name (apologies to JohnSmith at WEA, and to John Smith who manages Cook Da Books, and toJohn Smith the theatrical agent). But when there are two Dixie Peachesin the business, that is pushing the boat out just a little too far.... DixiePeach (the other one that is) has a record which is doing very welt in theReggae charts right now, and the battle of the mighty peacheiS hasbegun Guess what, yes our very own Peach from Egton House haswon the battle of the giants. Well done Dixie, or is it Bernie !!
Lots of TV shows back for the Autumn, Pebble Mill, SundaySunday, Superstore, Late Late Breakfast Show, TX, Whistle Test &The Tube- the companies who make pop videos must be rubbing theirhands together at the thought of it all. Capital Radio & Nescafe held avery successful reception for the media recently. The famous coffee co.will be sponsoring the Network Chart Show for a couple of years, and tocalibrate this fact, we all left with jars of the famous stuff, and a rice T-shirt with a slogan that definitely should not be worn anywhere nearLangham Street W.I.
Tours coming up in the near future from Dexys Midnight Runners,The Fall, Sade, Simply Red and Siouixsie & the Banshees. New singlesup & coming from Cult, Clash (long time no hear), 400 Blows, Coolnotes,Dead or Alive, Depeche Mode & Siouxsie & the Banshees (long time nohear also). Some good new albums too from Kate Bush, Stevie Wonder,Hall & Oates, Thompson Twins, Brass Construction, Marc Almond, IcicleWorks and Armoury Show. Look out for the newest darlings of the press:SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK, very high fashion, and featuring Tony James, exof Generation X.
Talking of high fashion, Kevin Rowland & Dexys, what have youdone to yourselves ?? The things that some people will do to get out ofhelping the wife with the housework at weekends! TUT TUT.
Capital Radio jock Roger Scott recently flew out to Montreal on aSaturday, spent all day Sunday spinning the hits of 1967 on a radiostation that he had worked for some years ago, then flew home to be intime for his Monday lunchtime show at Capital. By the way Roger, yourwife is wondering if you could cut the lawn next weekend. Finally, EltonJohn, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick & Gladys Knight team up for asingle together. The proceeds are going to research into AIDS. The songtitle Thats What Friends Are For' ...

TURNTABLE TIPS
Cheap Trick - Standing On The Edge- EpicRemember them? The loony guitarist, thedreamy peroxyde blonde singer, theaccountant look -a -like drummer and the'ordinary' bassplayer? Now they've releasedtheir latest one and with their video for Tonightit's You added on several music channels inEurope they could easily strike again. Themusic of C.T. hasn't changed much over thepast years and is guaranteed for a portion ofsolid rock (Little Sister, She's Got Motion) andan occasional ballad (Love Comes).
Todd Rundgren - A Cappella- WarnerApart from the occasional handclap noinstruments are used on this album and all thesounds heard come from the voice ofRundgren, programmed through a devicecalled the Emulator. An intriguing and hauntingconcept where layers of vocals are carefullyarranged one after the other. The experimentworks, basicly because the songs are verygood and captivating. Best tracks includeSomething To Fall Back On, Blue Orpheus andJohnee Jingo.
Hall & Oates - Live At The Apollo-RCAHall & Oats tribute to the heroes of their ownyouth, The Temptations. Apart from therecently covered Everytime You Go Away (PaulYoung) and the classic stomper Something IsWrong With My Baby, part 1 consists of the bigTemptations -hits, vocally assisted by the twooriginal Temptation members David Ruffin andEddie Kend ricks. An excellent and excitinglive- performance which only confirms Hall &Oates' status as contemporary soul -influenced artists.

HOUNDS OF LOVE"Her fame has yet to peak", one of the lastlines in our last weeks Madonna Spe-cial. She has taken our words very literal-ly, her album has, after 42 weeks andmany wanderings, finally reached the topof the European Top 100 singles. Thehighest postion she reached sofar wasno. 3 but now with continued sales in allthe major territories and the renewedsuccess of Angel backing this up, thealbum jumps up 2 notches and replacesDire Straits at the no, 1 spot.
Following the entries by Alan Par-son's Project (12) and Tears For Fears(13) earlier this year, Kate Bush sharestogether with Phil Collins the honour ofhaving the 3rd best album entry this year;Hounds Of Love is this weeks highestentry at 15 (sofar charted in the UK, Ger-many and Holland) and even beatsStevie Wonder's In Square Circle com-ing in at 20.
Looking at all the new albums enter-ing the Album Top 100 this week, it is
NO 39 - SEPTEMBER 30TH 1985
pagemore than obvious that the releaseschedules for the autumn of the majorcompanies have started off. Hall & Oatesare new at 51, Thompson Twins at 55,Jacques Higelin (64), Diana Ross (66),Bobby Womack (72), Gary Numan (73)and The Waterboys at no. 90. All arenew entries and together with the streamof other brand new albums not yetcharted, there is enough to choose foryour album program. The new JohnCougar Mellencamp album Scarecrow(Riva/Mercury) is a good one with trackslike Rain On The Scarecrow, Lonely 01'Night (the single) and the steady BetweenA Laugh And A Tear as possible candi-dates for your album rockshow or try thenew Jennifer Holliday album entitledSay You` Love Me (on Geffen) with thebeautiful titletrack and the impressingsingle Hard Times For Lovers. Or whatabout the new Cluarterflash album (BackInto Blue; also on Geffen), Lisa Lisa'sdebut album on CBS, or the new Rochesalbum (Mother World on Warner)? Morethan enough for a great show!

GuideWith the amount of disco/dance recordsmaking it to the charts, this weeks SinglesGuide will be reserved for new and excit-ing dancerecords, all worth checking andsuitable for your soul radioshows.
The successes of e.g. Five Star,Princess, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, Cool -notes and Mai Tai clearly show a newtrend tending towards pop -polished dis-co products in favour of the more funkyand rough disco approach of a few yearsback. The most recent proof of thosesuccessful polished soul products isPrincess with Say I'm Your No. 1 (Sup-reme 105 bpm) and after conquering theUK, it is now a smash in Holland andGermany and a lot other territories aregoing to follow.
The swinging tropic surprise fromHolland, Mai Tai have seen a fast upwardmovement in their carreer after thesuccess in the UK with History and Body& Soul. Body & Soul (Injection 113 bpm)is at the moment 40 in the European Top
MO singles and charted in the UK andIreland.
While on the subject of history, thenowadays fashion is a renewed interestfor old records enwrapped in a modem'85 sounding dance-remix. With the obvi-ous example of Paul Hardcastle as theleading innovator, the excellent '85 remixof Ben Liebrand of Tavares' HeavenMust Be Missing An Angel (EM! 119 bpm)should be a hot item for you to check out.Be sure not to miss its
ADDITIONAL IMPACTAnother powerful re-release is Class Ac-tions's Weekend on Jive. And yet otherre-releases already a success in the UKinclude Dan Hartman's l Can Dream Ab-out You, the double A -sided single ofAmii Stewart Knock On Wood/Light MyFire, Jaki Graham with Heaven Knows,Maria Vidal's Body Rock and D- Train'sYou're The One For Me. All those recordshave, apart from their proven quality onthe dancefloor, additional impact on theradio due to their commercial andsmooth pop/disco sounds.
Magazine 60 come from Spainwhere Hi -NAG is the current trend. They
have made a fresh interpretation of thetraditional Don Quichotte' theme. DonQuichotte (Polydor 122 bpm) is alreadycharted in Spain and France and indeed agood production with undoubtedly goodchances for the rest of Europe (startingwith the Benelux countries).
IMPORT CHANNELSTalking about Benelux, the Benelux coun-tries are always very keen in picking uphot disco records from the US and theUK through import channels. Both LisaLisa & Cult Jam's 1 Wonder If I Take YouHome (CBS 118 bpm), Colonel Abrams'Trapped (MCA 116 bpm) and Rene &Angela's I'll Be Good (Mercury 118 bpm)were already hot import items before thecompanies officially gave the sign to re-lease.
Some more releases this month thatdeserve your attention are the Shannon'84 sound -a -like Stop Playing On Medone by Vikki Love (4th & Broadway/Island 118 bpm) and the new MercyMercy- What Are We Gonna Do About lt,one that makes you definitely longing forthe summer holidays again (Ensign 106bpm).

(UNITED KINGDOMThe English Top 3 remains the samewith Bowie & Jagger on top followedby Bonnie Tyler and Stevie Wonder. Not everybody is so keen on MidgeLire's If 1 Was, but in the UK the single isalready up to no. 4 (from 8). Followingright after is Madonna's Angel (from10) and the other Sire act Red Box isnew in the Top 10 at postion no, 6 (from18), Other movers for Billy Idol (RebelYell; 13- 25), Colonel Abrams (Trapped;16-28) and the German product&Power Of Love by Jennifer Rush jump-ing from 36 to 15, making it togetherwith Baltimora and Mai Tat the 3rdEuro-production in the English Top 50.But the Norwegian band A --la is on it'sway to become the 4th! Their Take OnMe is new at 55 this week.
Other -entries for Style Council (TheLodgers, smooth and soft swingingsounds with vocal assistance of D.C.Lee, new at 17), Depeche Mode (It'sCalled A Heart, new at 21) and TheAlarm at 48 with Strength,
GERMANYAfter Tarzan Boy it looks like MariaMagdalena by the 22 year old Germansinger Sandra will be the next big Euro-pean cross -over hit; it has this typicalEuro-feel which helped Laura Brani-gan's Self- Control to chart that easilyin Europe last year. The single is cur-rently Germany's best played single. -
Two other German productions aremajor additions on nearly all the Ger-man stations; Modern Talking's ChenCheri Lady currently 5th best playedsingle and Falco's Vienna Calling at no.13 in the German Airplay Hitparade.Norwegian band A -Ha are suddenlypicking up.a lot of airplay in Europe withtheir smooth and sophisticated trackTake On Me, at the moment bubblingunder the German Airplay charts. Otherbubblers include German rockbandRodgau Monotones (Hallo ieh Bin Her-mann), Diana ROSS and Martinelli'sCenerentola..
Saleswise, Chen' by Modern Talk-ing is biggest runner up; 2-12. Othermoves for Princess (16-52) and C.C.Catch's I Can Lose My Heart Tonight(20-37). Entries for Depeche's It's Cal-led A Heart (25), Stevie (36) and PeterMaffay (Sonne In Der Nacht, new at 40;his album his currently at 1 in the Ger-man Album charts).
FRANCEBaltimora, Gold (Plus Des Etoiles) andJean -Jacques Goldman remain France
( (
best selling singles and the fast moversin the French combined charts (as corn -piled by Eurotipsheet) are ModernTalking's. You Can Win, Century'sLover Why, Ken Laszlo's Hey Hey Guy,Patrick Bruel's Comment Ca Va PourVous, Pierre Bachelet'sMarionnettiste, Sting's If You LoveSomebody and finally Bryan Ferry'sSlave To Love.
Madonna's Groove is still favouriterecord on the FM channels followed byWEA artist Jean-Pierre Mader with UnPied Devant L'Autre, Laurent Voulzywith Les Milts Sans Kim Wilde andTina's Hero.
HOLLANDKate Bush has the highest album entrythis week in the Dutch charts. Thesplendid album Hounds Of Love jumpsin at 32. As predicted last week, DianaRoss enters the Top 75 as 2nd bestentry at 41 and surprisingly enoughStevie Wonder comes in at 51, weexpected a somewhat higher entry. The2 fastest movers come from local pro-ductions, the Dutch singer Koos Al-berts moves from 26 to 15 and GeorgeBaker Selection from 35 to 20.
Dutch singer Gerard Joling picksup airplay with his single Love Is In YourEyes on a lot of English stations. In
Holland however his follow-up singleTicket To The Tropics is best playedsingle and shooting up the Dutch charts(10-10). Dutch production BoomBoom Mancini is The other Dutch pit -duct gaining a lot of airplay this week onthe. Dutch channels. Their single RedSkies is the first release from Ring Re-cords (distr. Arida), the label foundedand owned by the two Golden Earringmembers Berry Hay and George Kooy-mans. Red Skies is an excellent funkydancetrack, our tip for Eurocross-overthis week. With Joling on top Sting'sSeventh Wave, Bowie & Jagger, Cars(Drive) and Five Star's Let Me Be TheOne follow close by.
BELGIUMOnly one real notable change In the Top10: Bowie & Jagger from 12 to 6. Thelongest charting singles in the BelgianHitparade include Opus, 24 weeksfollowed by Duran Duran, 18 weeksand 2 local productions (Nacht UndNebel with Ready To Dance and TweeBelgeri with Lena) and 1 Euro-Crossover production (Rita Mitsoukowith Marcia Baila; why oh why is no odeoutside France and Belgium playingthis wonderful record?).
Highest entries from Modern Talk-ing (28), Bryan Ferry (38), Sting (34)and Cliff Richard (35).
SPAINWith most of the Southern Europeancountries programming Into TheGroove, Spain however is in favour ofAngel, the single currently getting a re -campaign from Warner. Angel is bestplayed single followed by local bandHombres -G (Venezia). A lot of holidaymakers in Spain will return with BallaPara Mi, the light -weighted poppydance song from Objetivo Birmaniacurrently very popular on Spanish radioand in the discoteques.

SWITZERLANDAlthough Sandra will never be MariaMagdalena she Still tops the Swiss Top30 followed by her producer MichaelCretu with Samurai moving from 5 tono. 2. As stated earlier, the beatiful loveballad Cherish is now on its way inContinental Europe to make full impact;Swiss fastest mover this week making astrong move from 22 to 6. It took sometime for the Swiss band Double tochart in their own country, but our defi-nite favourite Euro-Crossover song Thecaptain Of Her Heart is highest newentry at 24. Other new entries forThompson Twins and Modern Talking(Cheri Cheri Lady).
The records by Baltimora, StevieWonder, Cliff Richard, Frank Tovey(Luxury) and LIB 40 stand a goodchance to enter the Swiss Top 30 nextweek.
