Dear Parents/Carers, Welcome back to Term 3. We trust your children had a restful break and are ready for a term of purposeful learning and enriching learning experiences. SCHOOL REVIEW: School reviews are usually done every four years and are an opportunity to assess current practices and set future goals. A school is reviewed against the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 and the Education and Training Reform Regulations 2017 and the Guidelines to the Minimum Standards and other requirements for registration of schools. Various data sets, school processes, policies and procedures are analysed in order to assess how a school is performing. Newbury Primary School will undertake its first review in Term 4 2019. More information will follow as it becomes available. PREP 2020 ENROLMENT PROCESS: Our enrolment process is as follows:

If you have not registered your interest for enrolment you will need to complete this by going to our website.

Office staff will check if your address is in our zone. If it is you will receive a phone call to make an appointment to complete enrolment form

If we have places become available and you are not in our zone we will call you by the end of October to see if you would still like a place. Please enrol in your closet school just in case we do not have a place become available.

PREP 2020: If you or someone you know is wanting to enrol their child in Prep for 2020, please contact the office as soon as possible for an enrolment form. We have been inundated with a large number of Prep enrolments for 2020 and need to determine numbers very quickly, in order to assist us in our planning for next year. EVERY DAY COUNTS: Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. If your child has an appointment, where possible, please try and have them attend school for part of the day, rather than missing the whole day. The amount of days that students have missed school at Newbury Primary School this year, is already much higher than we would like. Please work in supporting the staff to understand that every day of school counts. Every day counts and coming to school every day is vital. The types of absence that require Principal approval are:

Bereavement

School refusal

Family holiday

Cultural observance- example Eid, Ramadan

Leisure or social activities

Special event

Participation in elite sporting event/training Please contact the Principal via the school email [email protected] to seek approval. If your child is absent, please notify us using Sentral to explain their absences. All absences must be accounted for on the day of absence. EVERY DAY COUNTS-FAMILY HOLIDAYS: Last year 2260 days of absences were due to family holidays! This greatly impacts on student learning. Whilst we understand that sometimes families need to go overseas due to family circumstances we ask you to take holidays out of school times. Students get eleven weeks of holidays a year and having additional time can impact on their social and academic learning needs. All family holidays need Principal approval. Please contact the Principal via the school email [email protected]

BIKES AND SCOOTERS: At Newbury Primary School, we promote health and fitness and encourage students to ride or scooter to school as a great way of starting their day. It is terrific to see many students riding their bikes or scooters to school, which assists them in being healthy. Please make sure your child is wearing a helmet and that once they enter the school grounds, they walk their bike or scooter in. When crossing the road, students should also walk their bike or scooters across the crossing for additional safety. WE ARE PAPERLESS: Just a reminder that all information notices will be delivered through our Sponsor-Ed app and school website. Only notices that require parent permission will be sent home. Please check the app or website regularly for updated information. SUPERVISION BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL: Please note that supervision for students before school commences at 8:45am and after school until 3:25pm. Staff are not on duty beyond these times. Please do not drop off your child before this time or leave them waiting after school beyond this time as they will not be supervised. ALL DAY GRAZING: At Newbury Primary School, we understand that students need food to fuel their brain and that they are hungry during the day. It is great to visit classrooms and see students nibbling on carrot sticks, cheese, rice crackers, fresh or dried fruit, yoghurt or vegetables. We encourage students to bring along healthy snacks that they can munch on in class so ensure you pack some into their lunchboxes. Some suggestions include; baby cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, dip and crackers, pretzels and small cans of tuna. Having these in containers where possible, also helps to reduce the amount of rubbish around the school. Please refrain from providing food that may affect any anaphylactic students. As always, we are privileged that you trust us with your greatest asset and thank you for choosing Newbury Primary School. The Prep students have made a great start to Term 3, with everyone coming back refreshed and ready to

take on the exciting learning experiences that Term 3 has to offer.

In English, students have been identifying characters and settings in a range of

narratives. They have been using their 5 senses to describe and write descriptive

sentences about characters and settings. They have also started learning about

editing their writing by checking if their sentences include capital letters, finger

spaces, full stops and it makes sense.

In Mathematics, students have begun learning about addition. They have

been listening to addition stories and then they are practicing identifying

and making the two parts using materials and counting the materials to solve them. Students have also

begun investigating length by measuring and comparing objects and explaining which is longer or shorter.

This Term in QUEST, students have begun looking how things have changed over time. They have been

sorting images of toys, transport, schools and clothing from the past and present and describing them as

old and new. Students will be going on an excursion later in the term, which the students are already

excited about.

In order to help the students with our QUEST topic, could you please scan the QR code below and

complete the short survey about how life was when you were growing up.

The year 1’s have returned from holidays eager and excited to continue their learning. In

term 3 the Year One Learning Community has continued their work on Narratives. We

have been focusing on exploring different characters and creating our own. We have

been considering their inside and outside traits and using our 5 senses and adjectives to

describe our amazing characters. We have also been making connections when reading

by exploring text to text, text to self and text to world connections. This is really helping us

understand our reading.

SWPBS

Students have been welcomed back

from their term break holidays to

another great term of learning at

Newbury.

As students have been at home for 2

weeks it is important to remind them of

the expectations at school.

On the first day back, we remind students of these expectations by going through our classroom

agreements and school matrix. We discuss what the words in the matrix mean and how they look. The visuals in our classrooms and around our

school also help support our understanding of these expectations.

Here at Newbury Primary School we take the safety of our students seriously. Please refer to the VicRoads

information below and discuss with your children the importance of road safety.

Crossing the road safely Pedestrians have to share the road with vehicles so it is important they take care when crossing the road. As a pedestrian, plan where you will walk and always choose the safest place to cross a road. Stop, Look, Listen, Think Follow the safe road crossing procedure – STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK.

STOP one step back from the kerb or shoulder of the road if there is no footpath.

LOOK in all directions for approaching traffic.

LISTEN in all directions for approaching traffic.

THINK about whether it is safe to cross the road – when the road is clear or all traffic has stopped.

When crossing, walk straight across the road. Keep LOOKING and LISTENING for traffic while crossing. This information is particularly relevant to young people learning to cross roads. But it also provides a useful reminder to everyone particularly to those who may be distracted when crossing the road. Crossings Even at crossings you still need to remain alert and check whether vehicles are stopping for you. Always make sure traffic has actually stopped before stepping onto the road. Remember children’s crossings are legally active only when the flags are displayed. If a school crossing supervisor is on duty, cross only when he or she indicates that it is safe. Crossing the road at other places Walk straight across the road – don’t jay-walk.

Keep checking in both directions to make sure the way is clear.

Try not to cross the road from between parked cars or near trees and bushes as drivers may not see you.

Avoid crossing near a bend or crest in the road. Give yourself a good chance to see vehicles coming from both directions.

Avoid crossing on roundabouts, particularly multi-lane roundabouts as they are very busy and complex and cars are not required to give way to you, unless there is a pedestrian crossing. Find somewhere further away from the roundabout to safely cross the road.
