Grade 5/6 Arts Excursion Next Friday, our Grade 5/6 students will be heading off to Melbourne to view the Victorian Opera perform “Alice Through the Looking Glass.” This experience is part of their preparation for the staging of the Grade 5/6 Production, “Alice – The Musical.” Our Grade 5/6 students are currently going through the audition process and excitement is building as they begin the fabulous dramatic journey that our Grade 5/6 Production provides. Positive Education Conference: As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, Mrs Malone and I recently attended the Positive Education conference in Melbourne. The Positive Education approach seeks to develop student’s wellbeing skills in order to improve their academic motivation and achievement. At our school, this approach forms a cornerstone of our school vision, philosophy and the “Avenel way” of doing things. Throughout the rest of the year, we will use key ideas and strategies from the conference to promote student engagement and achievement at our school. Division Cross Country Success Last Friday, eight of our students competed at the Division Cross Country competition at Yea. On a challenging course and with even more challenging temperatures, our students put in magnificent performances and continued the great tradition of endurance running that we have developed at Avenel Primary School. We have five runners progressing to the Regional Cross Country event which is a magnificent outcome given the size of our student population. Congratulations and best of luck to Wynter Morgan Eeles, Lucy Steers, Willow Harper, Will Nash and Lindsay Smith with their next level of challenge. Community Garden On Tuesday, Mrs Ivey, our Grade 1/2 students and I spent an industrious morning in our community garden. Our task was to fill our wicking beds with scoria and soil so that we can plant them out in the coming weeks. Our Grade 1/2 “bucket brigade” were mightily engaged in the task and we were very impressed by the knowledge they gained about volcanic rocks, the design of wicking beds and their general enthusiasm about our garden project. As you will see from the photos, there were lots of smiles throughout the morning.
Student Action Groups Yesterday, Mrs Malone and I met with our Grade 5/6 students as a follow up to their recent letters regarding improvements to our school. As a school, we view student voice as following three guiding principles:
1. It is sharing thoughts, ideas and opinions that are genuine in an environment of trust and respect.
2. It is offering realistic suggestions and expectations for the good of the whole school.
3. It is accepting responsibility for not only what you say but also for what needs to be done.
Over the course of the remainder of the year, we will working closely with our Grade 5/6 students to help them lead changes that they believe will improve our school. Some of these student led action projects include: multi-age activities, interschool sports, student led investigations and arts projects. Our Grade 5/6 students are excited, though nervous, at the thought of leading these projects and Mrs Malone and I are really looking forward to assisting them to deliver their upon their ideas. All the best, Neil

What is kombucha? Kombucha is a fermented drink made from sweetened tea and a specific culture known as a scoby. Scoby stands for ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts’. The bacteria and yeasts convert the sugar into ethanol and acetic acid. The acetic acid is what gives kombucha its distinctive sour taste. How do you make kombucha? Kombucha is usually made using: Sugar, cold filtered water, black/green tea (bags or loose leaf)
and Scoby – purchased online, or from an existing batch of kombucha. To make kombucha, the tea and sugar is steeped in boiled water and left to cool before adding the scoby. This is covered and left to ferment for up to a week. The mixture is then poured into an airtight container with some extra sugar and left for a few more days – the longer it is left, the fizzier it will become. At this point, flavourings such as spices or fruit can be added.
