OUR HERITAGE OUR PRIDEBoitumelo

Heritage Day implies different things to different people, “celebrating cultural diversity since we have different cultures in Africa, different traditional beliefs, music, dance, food and attire. This day means a lot to us as Africans and to the new generation because we learn more about our culture”, according to the Centre. Tumelo Legoabe, a NATED student from Business Studies further added that the importance of celebrating Heritage Day is to embrace our tradition, to remember who we are and where we come from, by wearing our cultural clothes and eating cultural food and playing indigenous games. Heritage Day should be celebrated.

Manthosi Heritage Day is a National Holiday held on 24 September every year, where South Africans celebrate their cultures and embrace their diverse traditions and values that contribute to the “rainbow nation”. The Staff of Waterberg TVET College and especially this year the Business Studies Centre staff took great pride in their cultures and other cultures by observing Heritage Day dressed in their cultural clothes.

Tumelo Morobe Waterberg TVET College hosted the 2016 Agricultural Open Day aimed at high school learners in Grade 12. The event was held on 12 May 2016 at the Rooywal Farm at Sterkrivier. This event presented an ideal opportunity for school-going learners to experience what they are being taught in schools. More than 300 learners were afforded an oppor tun i ty to f ind out for themselves exactly what agriculture is all about. The College believes that an opportunity to speak to someone face-to-face about the different academic programmes and what they involve is absolutely vital to making the appropriate study choices. Activities for the day included, information sharing on financial ass is tance, appl icat ion and registration processes, personal interaction with current lecturers, farm tour and exposure to some of the facilities at the farm.

EXTRA ORDINARY TALENTThabo Moloto It first started with the burning desire to know where an excavator acquire its extra ordinary power. TS Mamokgopo and KK Mokoka, two Engineering and Related Design Level 3 students decided to do research and discover that all movement and functions of a hydraulic excavator are accomplished through the use of hydraulic fluid, with hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic motors. From there they decided to design and build their own excavator and approached Mr Gumbe (ERD Lecturer) for assistance with pieces of the excavator that was already designed. On the LEFT is the excavator that they built. ‘This shows that some students really come to the College to unleash their talents. The College is proud of them’ - said Mr TS Senong.

Daniel Masenya Waterberg TVET College, Thabazimbi Campus’s SRC took an oath in the presence of their parents and the management as well as the staff members of the campus. The Inauguration Ceremony took place on 26 May 2016. This was the first group of student leaders to be inaugurated for the newly established campus. It was a historic moment and everyone in the attendance agreed. Mr Sekwala Raseleso, Student Support Officer at Business Studies Centre said ‘talk less in the presence of the elders’, meaning that the SRC is expected to deliver and bring about positive changes - let their deeds speak for themselves. He also alluded to the fact that Education is a traditional three-legged pot which comprised of Parents, Students and Lecturers working together, as a whole. Student Leaders were made to understand what is expected of them on Campus and the entire College regarding their roles and contributions for taking the College to greater heights. On behalf of the management, Ms. F Vosser, made it clear that they will support all students so that they could perform excellently in their studies and this relates well with the College motto/slogan, “Together ensuring success”. She urged students to take their studies seriously and encouraged parents to be actively involved in educational matters. Mr. P Van Staden, the Campus Manager, expressed his delight and said he is proud to be leading a bunch of winners, referring to the SRC members.

Gone too soon

Poem by Cretia Kaapu

One day, I'll leave the world and never come backYou cry when you see my number,You will miss me when you sit alone You won't be able to hear my laugh and voice againThere will be no more me; to irritate, tease, make you laugh and say sorry stupidly Tears might flow out of your eyesBut I will be gone, long and foreverSo whilst I live, enjoy my silly stupid company as much before I close my eyes forever…When my heart can beat no more

I hope I died for a principle or a belief that I had lived for I will die before my time because I feel the shadows depthSo much I wanted to accomplish before I reach my deathI have come to grips with the possibility and wiped the last tear from my eyesI loved those who were positive In the event of my demise

Remembering a beautiful soulSalute to our brother Moraka Alfred Khalo
