Our new playground is open at last! Already our students (and their younger siblings) have enjoyed our new

play space and the different challenges it presents. Tony, from Buildscape came to school on Tuesday

morning to talk to us about all the rocks, timber, and plants that went into creating our play space. Even

though we own our play space, all materials used and the team who built it, are local. Tony also talked

about the plants to go in at our next working bee, including two beautiful established trees to be planted in

the memory of Ben Newell. We hope to have these in soon. Our School Captains were on hand to cut a ribbon signalling

the opening and gave a lovely speech about how we need to be safe and fair when using the space. There has been a lot

of work gone into planning this area including the work led by Kelly Blake to develop our Master Plan for the whole area.

Let’s not forget the fantastic fundraising efforts of our Carnivale team led by Janina Lear and Bess Pilling last year.

Without them we would not have had a fantastic amount of money to get us started. Thank you Kelly, Janina and Bess

and all their helpers! Photos to come in next weeks newsletter.

We are now focused on the next stage of our play space around the existing sandpit and up to the Gunyah. We hope that

everyone will join us in planning the 2014 Carnivale so that we can be successful again in raising enough money to build

the next new section. I’m sure everyone understands that we cannot achieve these wonderful results without our families

helping us with our major fundraising efforts. Keep an eye on the newsletter for our Carnivale planning meeting.

Talking of fantastic efforts for our school…Congratulations to Cath Johnson and her team who organised and ran the

Bunnings BBQ on the weekend. They raised an incredible $1600 to go into our fundraising budget. Wow!! Our chocolate

drive is also going well and we hope to have a total for you soon. There are lots of things we would love to do around our

school and we appreciate all the help we receive from our student and their families.

There are lots of extra curricular activities being planned across our school at the moment so please take care to read all

notes and keep checking the calendar on the front of the newsletter so that you don’t miss out on anything. Those

students participating in our Active After School Communities (Circus Skills and Dance & Drill) make sure you have your

dates correct on your calendar at home as they are different for each activity. I will send out notes for term 4 activities

(Hip Hop & Cricket) very soon.

Reminder: If you were one of the families randomly selected by the computer to take part in the Parent Opinion survey,

you have until tomorrow morning to return your survey. They need to be posted on Friday morning.

Communication is vital – Keep reading the newsletter!

Be on time, Be at school, that’s the rule!

Let’s keep Unleashing Potential! Marina Keegan, Principal

New Wicking Bed - A huge thanks to the Manifold Heights Community Garden, and Derek Ryan’s expertise and effort in partic-

ular, for the magnificent new wicking bed built to the north of the Library. Designed to save water, it’s all ready to be planted up!

Have you got some seedlings (eg lettuce) you could assist the students in planting?

As with the Food Forest, anyone who is willing to plant, weed, and generally maintain the garden is also welcome to share the

produce.

Nude Food @ Mano At Manifold Heights PS we promote Sustainability in all areas.

A big focus this year is on reducing rubbish –in particular plastic. We have researched the effects of plastic on the environment

and seen the damage done to marine and other creatures and decided we can do something to help.

Nude Food Monday was introduced whereby rubbish free playlunches and lunches are encouraged – initially on at least one day

of the week. An incentive system to reinforce this focus (with a view to creating a rubbish free food habit all the time) has seen a

number of students winning their choice of a washable, reusable container as acknowledgement of their efforts.

Keep up the good work – save money while you save the environment!
