From the Principal ...

Dear Families,

What a week it has been! We began with a very confident and well prepared group of Year

5 students delivering their Leadership Speeches to our school community. Each and every one

of these students did themselves and their families proud. Many thanks to Mr Gori and Mrs

Kemp for the way in which these students were prepared and congratulations to these

students for the way in which they conducted themselves. We will announce 2015 leaders on

Thursday morning at 8.35am under the school.

Last night’s Christmas Concert was certainly a success. It was wonderful so many families could

join us for our yearly concert. Many thanks to our very talented musical team: Mrs Jessica

Blake, Mrs Monica Vitale and Mrs Vera Di Bella.

Despite the fact that we only have eight school days left for this year, we still have a number

of important events. The Year 6 and 7 Farewell, Awards Presentation Assembly, End of Year

Thanksgiving Mass and the issuing of report cards! I invite and encourage all of our families, if

possible, to join us for these special events.

Have a great week.

Paula Martin - Acting Principal

From the APRE ...

This morning in our Mass we celebrated the beginning of Advent, reminding us to 'be ready' for the coming of our saviour Jesus Christ. We are a little early as Advent doesn't officially begin until Sunday. Advent is the Liturgical season we observe as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. Advent marks the

beginning of the Liturgical year and begins on the fourth Sunday before December 25.

St. Patrick's Church certainly looks ready! Congratulations to the artistic people involved in

decorating the Church for Advent and Christmas. It looks absolutely beautiful.

As usual, Our Lady of Lourdes participated whole heartedly to make Mass a wonderful

experience for all involved this morning.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our Year 6 and 7 Farewell Mass next Wednesday

evening at 6:00pm and then again for our final Thanksgiving Mass on Friday 5th December.

Many blessings, Melissa Pavin

New SKOOLBAG App Launch

GIVING MASS—FRIDAY, 5 DECEMBER AT 9.00AM

At this time of the year, charitable organisations invite the public to contribute to their Christmas appeal. At Our Lady of Lourdes, our last Mass for the school year is a THANKS GIVING Mass …THANKS for all that

has been … and GIVING something to the poor.

Mass will be held in St. Patrick’s Church. We would like each child to bring a GIFT. Children are asked to bring items as listed, and representatives from the St. Vincent de Paul Society will collect, and distribute

them to the needy.

Each year families from Lourdes School have generously supported this appeal and once again, we ask for

your co-operation.

Prep: Tinned/packet soup, puddings, cake mix. Grade 1: Tinned meats including spaghetti, baked beans etc. Grade 2: Breakfast cereals, grains (e.g rice, spaghetti etc.) Grade 3: Biscuits (sweet or savoury), fruit cakes. Grade 4: Lollies, processed cheese, boys’ & girls’ handkerchiefs. Grade 5: Tinned vegetables (corn, peas, carrots, 3 bean mix, beetroot). Grade 6: Bottles (spaghetti sauce, cordial, jams, vegemite). Grade 7: Nuts, fruit cakes, Christmas pudding.

Children may bring these items to their class teacher or office any time before 5 December.

At assembly last Friday, our School launched our own Skoolbag iPhone and Android App to help us communicate more effectively with our Parent/Student community. We are asking parents/students to install our Skoolbag School App. To install it, just search for our school name "Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary Ingham" in either the Apple App Store, or Google Play Store. Let us know what you think!!!

Multi-Age (Composite) Classes

As has been the case at Lourdes for many years, we will have a number of multi-age

(composite) classes across the school in 2015. When compiling classes, teachers take

into account many factors including, age, work habits and friendship groups. As in any

class, teachers will follow the Australian Curriculum guidelines for each year level whilst

also catering for individual needs of children. Teachers in all year levels work

collaboratively to plan, assess and moderate students’ work to ensure that all students

develop skills and strategies that allow them to have a high level of independence and

efficiency in learning individually or in combination with others.

“Research has highlighted the benefits for both teachers and children when learning and teaching in a multi-age classroom. Benefits include more holistic, child-responsive curriculum practices that consider the understandings, capabilities and dispositions that children need for future work, e.g. working in diverse environments that seek workers who are multi-skilled, literate, cooperative, creative, adaptable, independent and resourceful.” (Queensland

Curriculum and Assessment Authority).

resources for the students to use in maths. Your help was truly appreciated!

Again, thank you!!!!!!!

Last Chance!

Page 8: Important Dates From the Principal - Amazon Web Services · little early as Advent doesn't officially begin until Sunday. Advent is the Liturgical season we observe as a time of expectant

When contemplating this end of year report and trying to remember all that we have achieved as the Lourdes P&F for 2014, I was prompted to ask myself if we had contributed well enough to our school and students’ way of life, had we made enough effort to involve the parents and carers of our Lourdes kids in their primary school years and how do we

more effectively communicate to our parent body so as to achieve greater involvement?

The P&F began the year with two new executive position holders. Nadine Jorgenson took on the Secretary’s role and we finally filled the Treasurer’s position with Elena Liesenberg taking on this role. Thank you to Christine Stephensen, Nadine &

Elena for all your assistance throughout the year.

And so I began reviewing our monthly meeting minutes and jotting down some points regarding our discussions and achievements. The page quickly filled and I realised how fortunate the school is to have had such a committed P&F body who have delivered much over the course of the year. With the assistance of Timothy Ham, Paula Martin & their staff, we

have had another great year.

The P&F have again contributed to significant resource upgrades through several major fund raising events during 2014. Some of these have included the purchase of 20 Google Chromebooks for student use. This was the most significant contribution from P&F and has allowed our kids to stay abreast of the technological advances in education that are ever changing. Funding towards Interactive learning software packages, History, Geography & reading resources as well as

significantly increasing the funding provided for our years 6 and 7 final camp at The Whitsundays.

In keeping with our Christian values, we have also contributed to those less fortunate through donations to the Missions of the Poor in the Philippines and sending proceeds raised from our annual St Vincent de Paul Sleepover to assist this organisation with their needs. We helped to fund the replacement of the old organ in St Patrick’s Church when it failed, as our school Masses are made more uplifting with music and children’s voices. On this note, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Fr. Damian McGrath and the assisting priests for their continuous involvement in providing school

masses and other services to our children and school.

In stepping through the fundraising events of the year, we would normally have kicked off with our Fete. This year was a little different as it was Lourdes turn to assist with organising the Catholic Deb Ball. This was done in close association with

another small group of people on the Deb Ball Committee.

The Ball date had been set to occur one week prior to our Fete and this caused a reasonably high level of anxiety for me. It was an extremely busy start to the year for some. The P&F called on all available troops for this period and came

through with very few injuries (maybe just one involving Mr. Ham of particular note!)

Thank you to Rita Melara for co-ordinating the fete once again and thanks to all parents and staff who helped on these nights, but more importantly to those who also dedicated many hours to attend meetings and make preparations in the

lead-up to these great community events.

For the first time, and with the help of our tuckshop convenor, Raylee Minato and a team of helpers, the Lourdes P&F provided a taste of India at the International Food Festival held at Rotary Park. This was also very well received and will feature as an

ongoing annual event.

And then there was Cannoli. What would Maraka be without cannoli? Susan and Mark Di Bartolo and helpers give us a small taste of them early in the year at the fete and always bring it home in a big way at the end of the year with Maraka. Once again many

hours dedicated, but with many a laugh had along the way. Some of us actually look forward to the cannoli working-bee days, maybe a little crazy but I see this as a credit to the way that Lourdes has refined the process over the years, making it an enjoyable few days. This year we were able to purchase some cooking and mixing equipment that has already paid

dividends and will potentially allow more cannoli to be made for future events.

The annual Mark Mappas awards night held in Townsville was also attended, with Lourdes P&F nominating John and

Mirella Silvini for their contributions to the P&F over many years.

Added to these events were end of term discos, a bait drive, a pasta drive, a Father’s Day raffle, Maraka float preparations, general working bees and end of year break-ups. So the year really has been a momentous one for the

P&F.

Almost exactly in between all of these happenings, came the news that our principal, Timothy Ham, had been seconded to Mt. Isa. I would like to congratulate and thank Paula Martin for carrying the role of Acting Principal and Melissa Pavin as

Acting APRE for the latter half of the year and maintaining a very close relationship with the P&F.

We will also be happily welcoming back Timothy Ham for 2015 and look forward to supporting him throughout the

coming year.

The coming year! I am sure you are all aware that 2015 is the Centenary Year for Our Lady of Lourdes School.

Preparations for this event have also been ongoing during the year and I need to extend my sincere thanks to Darren Firth for taking on the role of Centenary Committee Chairman and absolutely running with it. Well, I never knew Darren could run that fast! His passion as a past student has been inspirational and sometimes exhausting, but I can guarantee that he will leave no stone unturned for this momentous weekend in early June 2015. There are also many people on this committee and in the community who are currently working hard to bring this event together, and to all of them, I extend

my thanks.

You can appreciate the magnitude of the school Centenary celebration which will feature our annual Fete on the Saturday

night and a Mass and formal dinner in the Menegon Centre on the Sunday evening.

So, this will mean a lot of helping hands from very early in the New Year to ensure a great outcome for the community and

people travelling to Ingham for the event.

Please consider offering some of your time to come along to our meetings and get involved in the centenary preparations,

particularly those who are past students of Lourdes.

The end of 2014 brings us to farewell some families from our Lourdes community and some who have had a huge involvement in P&F activities for many years. To these parents and their children, I wish you all the best in your secondary school years and fully appreciate the true commitment you have given to not only assist in providing for your child, but for

all children who attend Our Lady of Lourdes School.

In closing, and after digesting the year that was, I know that the answers to my opening questions have been fulfilled and that the P&F has contributed well to Lourdes in many ways. It has contributed to the parish community and the wider community and it has provided many open invites to all parents and carers to be involved. Our best means of communication to you is Rita’s excellently presented weekly school newsletter which contains all the news regarding P&F

and school happenings.

Please take the time to read it well and consider the priority of making time in some very busy schedules to attend P&F

meetings in 2015.

The committee would love to see some new faces (particularly males) in February to help continue to maintain the positive

momentum that generates from working together for our kids.

Lastly, a special mention to my wife Natalie and my family for your patience and all the support you have offered me

during the year.

Thanks to all again for your friendship and help.

Best wishes for a Happy, Holy and Safe Christmas Season.
