HARMONY DAY 2018 The school was awash with orange last Wednesday as we celebrated Harmony Day. This year we teamed up with the Urunga CWA and studied the country Poland. After eating orange food, which the children were encouraged to bring from home and which was available at the canteen (thanks Sharon!), everyone assembled at the top COLA. Our guest speaker was Sophia, a delightful lady from Poland. She taught us some language, told us about her homeland and then stayed to watch the presentations from each class. We had the Kinders singing Heads and Shoulders in Polish, K/1 Orange and 1/2 Yellow performing a Polish folk dance, 3/4 Blue giving us information about Polish geograghy, 4/5 Indigo performing a Polish folktale-The Frog and the Princess, Sammy Kennedy sharing her own Polish project, 2/3 Green astounding us with their paper craft artwork and the 5/6’s giving us a short history lesson. Mrs Little from the CWA shared some interesting information about Polish folktales. She also brought in a traditional Polish apple cake which she made herself. The staff gobbled that up in no time!! Many thanks to all our students and teachers for their fine efforts, to our wonderful community and to all the parents who joined us!! NEWS FROM OUR PRINCIPAL MRS JANE MARTYN

LEADERSHIP CAMP Twelve of our Year 6 leaders attended a two day camp at Coffs Coast Adventure Centre along with 54 other students from other schools in our Bellinger Dorrigo Learning Community. They made new friends, listened to inspiring young keynote speakers, climbed the high ropes course and completed the gruelling commando course. This was a fabulous opportunity for our students to further develop their leadership skills. Thank you very much to our P&C for contributing to help these students attend this camp. JO BROOKER – CYBER SAFETY We are fortunate to be having Senior Constable Jo Brooker - the Youth Liaison Officer for the Coffs/ Clarence area visiting our school on Monday 9th April. She will be delivering an education program to our Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students on Cyber Safety. Following that, she will deliver a workshop for our parents on how to keep our children safe on the internet. The parent workshop will be from 5.00pm – 6.00pm. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend. An invitation was sent home yesterday.

THE CHAPLAIN Last year we saw the introduction to our school of the role of Chaplain which was filled by Mark Holberton. He moved onto a new position at the end of the year. Our new Chaplain is Vic Chapman (Chappie) who has been with us since the beginning of the year. The role of the Chaplain is to provide pastoral care (wellbeing) for staff and students. Within this role, the chaplain may work with small groups or individuals during lunch and play times assisting with the social and emotional development of the students, building social skills, resilience and self-esteem. During lessons, the chaplain may work with individuals who need support to settle into their work or to help build friendships and trust. We welcome Chappie into our team and hope he enjoys working with us and the community. He will be officially introduced to our school community at our whole school assembly on Thursday 22nd March at 2.20pm. You are welcome to join us.

P&C ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Last Wednesday, our P&C met for their AGM. A new committee has been elected for 2018. I would like to thank our hardworking outgoing P&C executive for their outstanding support for our students. Thank you to Karen Nicol, Roz McLagan, Soohar Warman, Lyn Buckman and Skye Dwinada. Enjoy a well-deserved rest! Congratulations to our newly elected P&C executive: Roz McLagan; Robyn Church; Cydoni McGuiggan; Kim Craw and Emma Hohnen. We are looking forward to working with you all.

HEALTH CARE CONCERNS If your child has any health care needs, in particular anaphylaxis, epilepsy or severe asthma please contact the office urgently to organise a meeting to develop an Individual Health Care Plan. These plans need to be developed in consultation with parents and reviewed annually. In cases of anaphylaxis, a current ASCIA plan is needed from a doctor.

WEEKLY SCHOOL RULE

The focus this week is the pink rule “be in the right place at the right time ”

We ask that you reinforce this week’s rule at home with your child.

EASTER HAT PARADE—THURSDAY 29th MARCH As the Easter Hat Parade approaches, children in Kindergarten to Year 2 are encouraged to make their hats at home and bring them into school on the day of the parade (Thursday 29th March). Parents of K-2 students are invited to join their children for afternoon tea at 1.45pm. Students will then assemble in the bottom COLA at 2.00pm to parade their creations then walk down town. The Easter raffle winners will be drawn and announced at a short morning assembly at 9.20am, so don’t forget to send in your sold tickets along with an Easter themed donation please. Miss Hansen

YEAR 6 SHIRTS Yesterday we sent home notes to Year 6 students about ordering “Class of 2018” shirts. They will be three toned, with sky blue being the main colour, navy sleeves and side panels of white. They will have an artwork on the back incorporating all the Year 6 students names. They will be a great keepsake and reminder of a fantastic final year at Urunga Public School. The shirts will be able to be worn as part of the school uniform. If Year 6 students would like to make an order, please return the note and $15 deposit by Thursday 29th March. The balance owing will be due early in Term 2. Miss Wallace, Miss Stibbs and Mr Patterson

K/1 ORANGE - ALL ABOUT DATA K/1 Orange have been busy learning about Data and Graphs during Mathematics. Our students have been gathering and organising data, displaying data in bar graphs and interpreting the results. What better way to learn about data than to figure out how many colours are in each smartie packet! The best bit was getting to eat the smarties at the end! Mrs Mitchell

NETBALL CLINIC Last Thursday, classes from K to 6 were fortunate enough to have Zoe Goodsell, the Regional Development Officer for netball run through some skills and drills to expose children to the game of netball. Everyone really enjoyed the games, a lot of fun was had by all and netball was definitely a hit. Bellingen Netball Association will be holding “come along and learn” sessions as well as training every Friday on the school’s bottom COLA from 4pm–5pm. Boys and girls are welcome from all years (K-6). Please contact Crystal on 0439 081 045 for more information.
