Dear Central Families, We have had a wonderful start to the new school year. There are lots of exciting things to be

proud of. One of the first and foremost things is the staff training for the new year. We took

two days at the end of the summer to focus on Restorative Justice. The staff spent a couple of

days brainstorming on how to get teachers to create better relationships with students. One

of the ways to do it was to reinvent advisory (formally known as CAP). We surveyed students

last year and were surprised at the number of students that didn’t feel welcomed here at

Central. We took that information very seriously and decided to create opportunities for

teachers to create and maintain better relationships with students.

Now that the school -year is off to a good start, it’s time to take a look at closer look at some

of the wonderful things that are happening at WAC. We have a few new teachers that have

joined the Bulldog family. I want to personally welcome to Central from the Art Dept.: Ms.

Bauske, Business Dept.: Mr. Calarco and Mr. Walsko, Reading Dept.: Ms. Clark, Math Dept.: Ms.

Dopierala, Music Dept.: Ms. Troyer, Tech Dept.: Mr. Gizlaff, World Language Dept.: Ms. An and

SPED: Mr. Maltsch.

Last but not least, we have two new assistant principals joining the administrative team this

year. Mr. Brian Summerfield and Mr. Jim young. Mr. Brian Summerfield was a teacher and

Dean of Students at Kenosha Bradford High School. Mr. Young is a graduate of Penn State

University and worked as an administrator for Carmen High School. Please give a warm

Central welcome to all of our new staff.

With the holiday season upon us, it is once again time to remind ourselves of what it is to be

truly thankful. I am truly thankful for all of the wonderful things that have taken place over

the past weeks here at Central High School.

Happy Thanksgiving

Sincerely, Jeffery A. Taylor Principal

Professional Services Group (PSG) is currently providing mental

health services to students in the WAWM School District struggling

with academic and behavioral concerns. This may include anxiety,

depression, trauma, anger, ADHD, grief, stress management, and

academic underachievement. Services are provided within the school and eliminate the

barrier of going to an outpatient clinic. All providers are licensed by the State of Wisconsin

and are able to bill Medicaid for services, as well as most private insurance and marketplace

HMOs. If you are interested in starting services for your student or have questions, please

contact West Allis Central High School social worker, Larry Leinberger at 414-604-3129, or

PSG directly at 414-475-2788.

BULLDOG ACADEMIC CENTER

Tuesday - Thursday from 3:00pm -5:00pm in the IMC. Students are allowed to go home at

any time (not required to stay until 5). There are 3 teachers there to guide, support and

help students with work. This is the way to bring up grades, finish tests for teachers, be held accountable for grades

and get some additional help. Mr. Bakka, Mr. Mattern and Mrs. Husting are there to support everyone.

Early Dismissals

Students who must leave during the school day for a pre-approved

reason must have a parent/guardian call the attendance office at 414-604-

3101 or bring a parent note to attendance office in order to be issued an early dismissal slip. Upon return to the

school, the student must sign in at the attendance office to be issued a pass back to class. Students are not

allowed to leave the building for any reason during the school day without parent/guardian consent. Students who

leave the school building without proper permission may be considered truant. Last minute calls for an early

dismissal can be difficult.

WAWM-SD "Bulldog Radio, Where Artists Live"

Tune in to WAWM-SD Bulldog Radio, Central's student-run online

radio station! Students at Central are learning to host radio content,

develop their communications skills, and learn how to run a radio

station from the ground up. The station is known as WAWM-SD

Bulldog Radio, "Where Artists Live."

The station can be streamed through http://www.wawmsdradio.com as well as through either our free iPhone or

Android apps that can be found by searching your app store for "WAWM-SD Bulldog Radio." We are also on the

free tuneIn radio app as well. The radio station plays a AAA format, featuring artists such as Jack Johnson,

BoDeans, Foo Fighters, Sheryl Crow, Tom Petty, The Police, Dave Matthews Band, Nirvana, the Beatles, Bob

Marley, Norah Jones, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Pearl Jam and much more. We also focus on playing local

Milwaukee musicians like Trapper Schoepp, The Record Company, Rose of the West, Violent Femmes, Reyna,

Kings Go Forth, The Gufs and more. Bulldog Radio now reports airplay to the national NACC college radio charts.

We are trying to raise money so that we can broadcast our Bulldogs football, basketball and baseball games! We

need to raise about a thousand dollars to purchase the broadcast equipment. If you have a business, or know

someone with a business that would be interested in sponsoring programming on WAWM-SD, please fill out and

return the sponsorship packet that can be found on the main page at http://www.wawmsdradio.com. Businesses

that sponsor programming will have underwriting spots that will air throughout the day on the station featuring

information about the business. Your tax-deductible sponsorship will help us to raise needed funds to automate

the station, and purchase equipment that will allow for us to broadcast Bulldogs football, basketball and baseball

games in the future! We will begin broadcasting Bulldogs football in the fall, provided that we can raise the

necessary funds. If your student is interested in joining the radio station staff, have them stop by and see Mr. Rutz

in room 248.

SKYWARD Family Access is available to parents with students in the

West Allis-West Milwaukee School.

Once you activate your account and establish your username and password it

enables parents to make payments, update telephone numbers and email

addresses, view student schedules and attendance, and check on student grades

while logged in on any personal device. You will also be able to pay your child’s school fees and lunch fees directly

through Skyward. This important tool will help parents monitor their child’s progress in school and allow for

increased communication with teachers.

1. Letter from the employer stating the intent to employ the minor along with the job duties, hours of work and time of day the minor will be working.

Reporting Absences

Parents – Please be reminded that any time a student is going to be absent from

school for any part of the day, you must call the absence in to our attendance

office at 414-604-3101. This is a 24-hour phone line, and a message may be left at

any time, day or night. If a live attendant is not available when you call, please

leave a clear and detailed message indicating your name, the student’s name, the

reason for the absence, and a phone number where you may be reached. All attendance messages are listened to

repeatedly throughout the school day for additional messages. An automated attendance message is sent out

every night for any students who had an unexcused absence that day, i.e. students who were not called in for the

day or students who missed one or more classes without a parent excuse. If you receive one of these calls, please

contact the attendance office with the reason for the student’s absence. If you feel the call was an error, please

check your Parent Portal to identify the class your child was late to or missed, discuss it with your student and

have them speak to the teacher who marked them absent. The teacher will contact our attendance office to rectify

the error. Thank you for your assistance and understanding in this matter.

Severe Weather and School Closing

One of the primary goals of West Allis-West Milwaukee school district personnel is to protect the safety and well-being of students. If severe weather conditions develop, a decision to close will only be

made after carefully considering a number of factors. The timing of the decision is influenced by the severity, intensity and movement of the storm center. A decision to close will be made as early as possible, preferably by 6 a.m. Area radio, TV, and cable television stations will be notified immediately after the decision is made so that students, parents and staff members will be informed promptly.

Dismissing Classes Early An effort will be made to follow the regular end-of-the-day dismissal schedule since changing it can cause confusion and inconvenience for parents and students. On those rare occasions when maintaining the regular schedule might result in large groups of students being unable to return home safely, school will be dismissed early. In such instances, radio and television stations will be asked to provide advance warning of the closing time.

Bus Transportation and Early Dismissal Bus transportation, not grade level, is the main factor that determines dismissal times. Bus scheduling is a complicated matter, and route changes during an early dismissal have the potential for causing confusion and the later arrival home of students. Bus schedules are rarely changed during an early dismissal. Upon the end of a school day, many middle school and high school students are responsible for caring for their elementary-age brothers and sisters. The school district wants to avoid transporting elementary school students home prior to the arrival of their older brothers and sisters.

Factors that determine school closings and early dismissals

Current weather/safety condition Weather forecast Highway and road conditions Ability of bus contractors and/or parents to transport students Ability of staff members to travel to and from their work assignments. Operating plans of other area school districts Status of related special activities School closing announcement

School closing information will be broadcast over the following radio and

television stations:
