Dear Parent and Caregivers Thank You and Farewell Mrs Lomax Sadly we farewell Mrs Lomax who will be taking up the position of Assistant Principal at St Mary’s in Donnybrook for the commencement of term two. We congratulate Mrs Lomax on her promotion however we will miss her at St Joseph’s. Mrs Lomax has been an outstanding teacher in a number of classes and support roles for over 14 years and during this time has had a huge impact on the lives and education of many of our students. There will be a farewell to Mrs Lomax at the assembly next Monday morning. Year Two Teacher Next term we welcome Miss Amanda Oakley onto staff. Miss Oakley will be teaching in Year Two for four days per week and sharing with Mr Presser who will be teaching for 1 day per week. ANZAC Day Ceremony ANZAC Day is a very important day for all Australians and this year it occurs during the holidays. To commemorate this special Day, we will be holding a service at 11.30am next Monday, 8 April. All families are invited to join us for this event. First Reconciliation Congratulations to the candidates from Year Three that received the Sacrament of First Reconciliation yesterday evening. The candidates, along with their Prayer Friends, are to be commended on their reverence and participation. A special acknowledgement to Miss Hearn, Mrs Strano and Mrs Stapleton for preparing the students and the Liturgy so well. Thank you to Mr Mills and the choir for the excellent music. Thank you also to Fr Noe, Fr Gerald, Fr JB and Monsignor John for officiating during the Sacrament. The staff of St Joseph’s are to be commended on their assistance in carrying out the many tasks during the evening. Thank you to the parents of Year Three for working in partnership with the school and Parish to ensure that the Sacrament of Reconciliation has been a meaningful experience for all involved. Year Four Liturgy The Year Four classes celebrated their class Liturgy on Thursday, 28 March. The theme for the Liturgy was “Reconciliation. Thank you to Mrs Robertson and Mrs McAuley for their work in preparing the students. Also thank you to the parents who were able to join in with this celebration. Stations of the Cross The Year Five students will be presenting the ‘Stations of the Cross’ at 1.50pm on Friday, 12 April. Easter falls during the holidays however it is important that the students are provided with the opportunity to focus on the true meaning of Easter. Parents are warmly invited to attend the Stations of the Cross also. Interschool Swimming Carnival Congratulations to all the students who represented St Joseph’s at the Interschool Swimming Carnival last Thursday. All the students are to be commended on their enthusiastic participation, sportsmanship and cooperation. Results worthy of special mention are included on page five. Thank you to Mrs Saffy and Mr Presser for organising our participation in the carnival and also thank you to Mrs Reibel and Mr Spouse for their assistance. Thank you also to Mrs Lara Lee and Mr Stephen Saffy for providing the swimming training each Monday and Wednesday. We can certainly see the improvement of the students who attended these coaching sessions. Parent/Teacher Interviews This year we trialled the interviews on a pupil free day and the feedback has been very positive. The interviews are an important protocol to give parents feedback on their child’s progress. Parents are encouraged to positively reinforce their child on their accomplishments and to set achievable improvement goals. Scitech Incursion Today and tomorrow the students will be participating in workshops conducted by Scitech. This is certainly a wonderful opportunity for the students and I am sure they will gain valuable knowledge to support their further learning in their classes with Ms Trimboli. Making Jesus Real - Student Morning Tea

Staff Leave I will be on Long Service Leave next week. Mrs Stapleton will be the relieving Principal during this time. Footy After a slow start against GWS, the Eagles returned to their winning form with a resounding win last week. It will be a big challenge with a Grand Final replay against Collingwood this weekend. Fingers crossed. I am sure the Dockers will bounce back after their loss to the Suns last week. As this will be the last newsletter for this term, of behalf on the St Joseph’s staff, I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break and a happy and holy Easter. God bless, Riley Horrocks Principal First Reconciliation Congratulations to our Year Three students who received First Reconciliation last night. We appreciate the assistance from parents in preparing the children. A huge thank you to our choir who helped make the occasion very special. Enrolment Mass Sunday 7 April St Patrick’s Cathedral - 10.00am All Year Four First Eucharist (Catholic) students and their parents are required to formally enrol for First Eucharist at St Patrick’s Cathedral during 10.00am mass on 7 April. At this Mass you will be asked to stand and make a ver-bal commitment and hand in your enrolment form. Please bring the filled in forms and response sheets with you. Families are asked to sit in the area in front of the lectern so that they are able to stand and speak as a group. If parents are unable to attend the Parish Mass they need to contact Fr Noe to make an appointment to meet with him. The Parish Office number is 9721 2141. Non-Catholic families are very welcome to attend if they wish. Year Six Retreat Day We wish the Year Six students all the best for their Confirmation Retreat day, on Wednesday, 10 April. The students will be participating in a Liturgy with Fr Noe and in hand on activities to help them gain an understanding about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Stations of the Cross Our Stations of The Cross service will be held at 1.50pm on 12 April. Parents are invited to attend. Our wonderful Year Five classes will be leading this enactment.

Chrism Mass Year Six students and their families are invited to attend the Chrism Mass on 16 April 11.00am at St Patrick’s Cathedral. This is a very relevant mass for the Year Six students to attend as the Oil of Chrism which will be used to Confirm them at Confirmation will be blessed by our Bishop. Mass booklets will be sent home with the Year Six students next week. Please bring them to the Cathedral with you. GIVE A CAN 2019 – Invitation to Participate This will be the 26th year Bunbury Leschenault Rotary will conduct their “Give a damn, give a can” appeal. All collected food will be passed on to the In Town Lunch Centre, Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul Society for distribution to needy families. We are sure you are all well aware that the number of families needing help increases each year! Our school has once again been invited to participate. It is a great opportunity for children to be personally involved in a community service program simply by bringing gifts of food - cans, packets of pasta, rice, soup or other non-perishable food items and placing them in the school’s main collection box. The school appeal will run over the first 4 weeks of term two. The collection box will be collected from school on Wednesday 29 May (the Wednesday of week 5). Easter Eggs and Holidays Lord Jesus, we celebrate Easter with Easter eggs and holidays. May we never forget the meaning of these symbols of new life and joy. May we take time to remember your gifts to us - the gift of your life and death on the cross and the hope of eternal life that your resurrection brings. Easter holidays are also holy days. Help us to remember. Help us to say thanks. Amen,. Easter Church Services Timetable Please see the Easter Church services timetable on page eight. Free Dress Day For Catholic Care Friday 12 April Our wonderful student council has requested a free dress day on Friday 12 April. All students may at-tend school in casual clothes and are asked to donate a gold coin in aid of the Bishop’s Catholic Care Day. The motto for the day is “People Helping People”. The church will forward all proceeds from the day towards supporting St John of God South West Community Alcohol and Drug Service.

Mrs Stapleton Assistant Principal Literacy: Helping your child to read continued In our last newsletter we identified the various activities families can engage in to support students as they master the skill of reading. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of these activities: Position yourself so your child can see the words and pictures. Use your “reading finger” to track your reading – this will help your child identify and remember words and sounds. Look for rhyme, rhythm or repetition in books to help your child develop a love of language. Point out the important features of a book and explore words using a dictionary. Encourage your child to take over some of the reading if they feel confident. Rather than interrupt them, Discuss mistakes at the end. Allow your child to read at their own pace and give them the opportunity to re-read favourite books as much

as they like. Home reading books Thank you to the diligent families who read with their children each morning or evening before or after school – it certainly makes a huge difference. At this time of the term we need to do a quick stocktake of our books to ensure they are present and accounted for. With this in mind we will finish sending reading books home by the end of week 10. If you suspect you have some reading books lurking in corners, under beds, behind the sofa or at the bottom of bags, please track them down and return them. We will be most grateful. Home reading will then start up immediately at the beginning of term two. If you miss the routine of reading during the holidays, don’t forget the local library as a great resource. Make Jesus Real At St Joseph’s when we remind students that they are in charge of their attitude, we explain that they can choose the qualities they would like to have. Being a “Happy Chappy” means choosing to be friendly, humble, gentle, cheerful, kind, forgiving and generous – much like living out the fruit of the Holy Spirit. It’s easy to contrast them with the features of a “Nasty Pastie” who often complains, puts people down and can’t be bothered putting in any effort. When we ask students how they would like others to see them, they definitely prefer to be thought of as someone who shows the Spirit of Jesus.

Anzac Day This year Anzac Day occurs during the second week of the school holidays. As is the custom, our student leaders have been invited to attend the parade and ceremony and have received information about it this week. We will meet outside the Bunbury RSL and march off at 10.30am to the main service at the Bricknell Shell. It would be wonderful to have members from our school community encouraging us along the way. Mrs Olsen Assistant Principal Seasons for Growth - Years Two to Six students. Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At St Joseph’s we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce or related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth which will commence in week three, term two. This program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research which highlights the importance of social support and the need to practise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks. Families with students in years two to six received an electronic copy via email and the Skoolbag App on 28 march that explains more details about the Seasons for Growth program. If you think your son or daughter would benefit from Seasons for Growth I would encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the program. Specific participant numbers are required for this programme to run. For your convenience a copy of the letter is on page seven. If you are intending to enrol your child please ensure you advise by either options one or two by Friday 5 April. St Joseph’s is pleased to be able to offer this important program and we are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved. If you require further information please contact Ms Trimboli. Ms Trimboli Seasons for Growth Coordinator Interschool Swimming Carnival Results
