Dear Parents, Students and Members of Community,
On Wednesday evening, we conducted a very well attended AGM with
fifty two people present. It was great to see so many attending to hear
reports from the Parish, P&F, School Board and school. It was an
opportunity to share the successes of 2017 and outline the goals and
initiatives for 2018.
The other pleasing aspect out of the AGM was that we had plenty of
nominations for leadership positions on the P&F executive and School
Board. This, combined with all our class representatives being elected at
the parent meetings, is another strong example of the parental and
community support we have present at OLC.

some improvements to the pre-primary and kindy play spaces, together with
some general school maintenance. Any further volunteers would be
welcome and appreciated so we can complete the work quickly. Morning
tea, lunch and some refreshments will be available. Thanks also to the
families who have made generous donations of materials and will be
providing equipment.
Professional Development Day
Our staff will be participating in a Professional Development Day on Tuesday 6th March. Students
will not return to school after the long weekend until Wednesday 7th March.

Congratulations and thanks to all our students for their excellent
and sporting spirit. Thanks again to all the volunteer parents for
all your help. Mrs Sinclair will provide a full report in next week’s
newsletter.
Interschool Swimming Carnival
Advance notice that the Interschool Carnival will take place on
Thursday 22nd March at the South West Sports Centre in Bunbury.
Mrs Sinclair will send out the necessary information to those

Sloan Drive Pick Up Lane
We encourage parents to please make use of the Sloan Drive pick-up and drop off facility in the
afternoons. Some important points for afternoon pick up: Please park and wait in your cars in the 6 bays provided. Students will be ready from 3:10pm to be collected. We ask parents to avoid walking up the drive through (if they are parked on Sloan Drive) as this is a
safety hazard. Year 4 to 6 students can collect younger siblings prior to coming down. Year 3 students without younger siblings are also welcome to use the drive-through.
P&F Welcome Function
Please join with the P&F for the Sundowner tonight. Details later in this newsletter.
See you all there.
God bless,
Des Wilkie
Principal
OLC CATHOLIC COMMUNITY CORNER
OLC OPENING MASS
This morning we celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving for the beginning of the new school year.
Students from Year 1 to Year 6 walked to OLOTSC Church and were joined by families and
parishioners in the celebration of the Eucharist. The theme of the mass was love, and how we can try
to be more like Jesus through our actions. Congratulations to our Year Six student leaders who
received their badges following mass, after they were blessed by Father Ian during the service.
PROJECT COMPASSION
One of the ways we can make Lent meaningful is to make sacrifices to give to others in
need. OLC families are encouraged to donate to Project Compassion during Lent by
making a contribution to the collection boxes located in classrooms and offices around
the school. A sacrifice like giving up a weekly treat (like treats or ice cream) and instead
donating the money to this cause helps students to make Lent meaningful, and develops
compassion and empathy for others. Please be generous and support Project
Compassion to help those in need.
YEAR 5 FAMILY MASS & TEACHERS, BOARD & P&F COMMISSIONING MASS
The first of our Family Masses hosted by a different class, commences THIS Saturday night (23rd
February) with our Year 5 students taking the lead. The Teachers, School Board and P&F Executive for
2018 will also be commissioned during the mass.
The Year 5’s will participate by way of greeting, prayers of the faithful, collection, offertory and choir.
We warmly invite all families from any year level who would like to attend and celebrate Mass to
come along and to share fellowship and pizza following the celebration. The pizza is generously
funded by the OLC P&F. and by the Dunsborough parish. Please RSVP with numbers to
[email protected] for catering purposes ASAP.
God Bless and have a great week everyone.
Mrs Amie Meyer, OLC Religious Education Coordinator.
Early Childhood Corner. Week 4 Term One 2018.
What a wonderful beginning to 2018 our little people have made. Walking around the
classrooms it has been a joy to observe the delightful classroom environments that the
classroom teachers have worked so hard to set up. The uncluttered and well lit work spaces
provide an environment aimed to maximise learning for your children. The teachers have
worked to support our present focus on sustainability by choosing to use natural products and
colours in their displays.
Enquiry learning projects have formed the basis of classroom programmes. We have tried to
use the interests of the children to provoke questions from the children that require deep
thinking and creativity.
It is an important focus of Early Childhood Learning to foster positive dispositions for learning.
What are learning dispositions?
Dispositions are ‘relatively enduring habits of mind and action’ (Katz & Chard, 1989, p. 30) that
encourage learners to respond to experiences in particular ways (Carr, 2001). Carr defines
dispositions as ‘participation repertoires from which a learner recognises, selects, edits,
responds to, resists, searches for and constructs learning opportunities’ (2001, p. 21).
Dispositions are linked to our attitudes and feelings about ourselves and our views about the
different identities or ‘possible selves’ (Carr, 1995, p. 4) that we can be and become.
Positive dispositions for learning.
Children are enthusiastic when they initiate and engage in investigations, interactions and
play. When children are curious they explore, ask questions and solve problems, and can often
demonstrate great commitment and persistence in focusing on a goal.
The Early Years Learning Framework identifies positive dispositions for learning as:
◆ enthusiasm
◆ curiosity
◆ commitment
◆ persistence
◆ confidence
◆ cooperation
◆ reflexivity.
Learning processes are also featured in the EYLF. These include:
◆ problem-solving
◆ inquiry
◆ experimentation
◆ hypothesising
◆ researching
◆ investigating.
Children engage in these processes as they take part in everyday life with their families and in
Early Childhood settings. From the time they are very young, children are interested in
investigating how things work, and ask many ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions. Problem-solving
involves viewing situations from a range of different perspectives, and posing problems as well
as searching for their answers. Children involved in collaborative problem-solving in small
groups also share ideas, challenge each other’s thinking, negotiate and work towards shared
goals. This means they also develop their capacity to communicate their ideas to others
(Outcome 5 of the EYLF) and contribute to a group (Outcome 2 of the EYLF). As children’s
vocabulary increases, they are able to use language to: ask questions, make predictions,
articulate their hypotheses, give reasons for their predictions and solutions, and reflect on their
learning.
Busy Bee
We are all very excited about this weekend’s busy bee. Our new water tank and garden beds
have arrived for the pre-primary playground area and these will be installed tomorrow. A
HUGE thank you to the parents who have donated plants, logs and other natural resources for
us to use.
We have a Dingo loader coming to help and offers of utes, high pressure sprayers and most
importantly manpower.
It’s not too late to come. Just turn up tomorrow morning at 9am. Don’t forget to bring your
garden tools (wheelbarrow, shovels, rakes and garden shears). Work gloves would be handy
too.
SEE YOU THERE!
