Under the provisions o f the Immigration and Nationality Act, American nationality may be lost through being naturalized in, taking an oath or making a declaration o f allegiance to, serving in military forces of, accepting employment under the government of, or by voting in the elections o f a foreign state. Naturalized nationals may be expatriated by residing for 3 years in the country o f birth or former nationality, or by residing for 5 years in any other foreign state or states.

American nationals abroad may consult the nearest American diplomatic or consular officer for information as to specific provisions o f the Immigration and Nationality Act.

C A U T IO NA person to whom a passport has been issued,

who uses or attempts to use it in violation o f the conditions or restrictions contained therein, may have the protection o f t&e'Ufiiitea States w ith­drawn from him while he continues to reside abroad and may bfc liable for prosecution under the provisions o f section 1544 o f title 18, United States Code.

This passport is a valuable document. I f it is lost or destroyed, the fact and the circumstances o f the loss should be immediately reported to the Passport Office, Department o f State, or to the nearest American consulate, or, in an outlying possession o f the United States, to the chief ex­ecutive thereof, and to the local police authorities. N ew passports can be issued in such cases on ly after exhaustive investigation.

This passport must not be altered or mutilated in any manner. N o stamps, statements, nota­tions, or other additions should be placed or made in this passport other than by officials o f the United States or of foreign countries in connection With official matters. The alteration o f the pass­port may render it IN V A L ID .
