SPOTLIGHT – October 2016
Welcome to the ALS Library Our library media centre offers more than 24, 000 titles in English, Arabic and French. We aim to provide high-interest reading material that both supports our IB school curriculum and motivates our students to become life-long readers. Recent changes and developments to our library arrangement have created a more versatile environment where students can enjoy reading and exploring our extensive collection during both class sessions and on their breaks or free periods. We are delighted to help our students find a “just right book” and encourage them to renew or checkout new books every week! Please ask your child what book they are reading and have them share it with you. This month we have also started the ALS Book Care Challenge for Kindergarten through Grade 5. Classes returning all of their library books on time and in good
condition will be eligible to checkout two books per student and win a prize at the end of the year! While there are no fines for late books, if a book is lost or severely damaged we ask
students to please pay the cost of the book so we may replace it. Please come and visit us soon! Andrea & Vernie

Drivers - K-3 I have been saddened recently by the number of drivers who ignore both our guards and me when trying to assist with the new parking arrangements at the K-3 entrance. The new procedures have been put in place to ensure the safety of ALL children (including yours) and so it is really important that drivers and fathers do not stop in the middle of the road to let out their children. Move along to one of the spaces and please follow the instructions of the guards. A letter came out from school last week in both Arabic and English and I am attaching the letter again today so please tell your driver about where they should stop the car in future.
ADVANCED LEARNING SCHOOLS - RIYADH
SPOTLIGHT – October 2016
From the superintendent - Neil
Hugo
The school year is well under way
now and the classrooms are full of
eager students trying
hard to make this year
their best one yet. We
had a smooth start to the year as we warmly
welcomed our new Boys’ Principal, Mr. Gerry
Steiert. The children in K-3 were very excited
to return to school
and have their
photos taken with
the balloon
displays at the
entrance to the K-3
campus. Thank
you Miss Hill for
creating such a
welcoming
atmosphere for our
students.
IB Diploma Exam Results
I am delighted to inform you that we had 100% success
rate with the students who entered for the full IB Diploma,
excellent results for ALS. Congratulations to Dalal Ghazal,
Nouf AlDgaither, Monirah AlAiban, Lulwa Alamdar, Leen
Hassan Al Saud, Haya AlQuraishi, Haifa AlBassam,
lJohara Al Saud, AlAnoud AlAbdulhadi, Shaikhah Al Saud
and Ahmed Al Madan.
Also, I am delighted to report that of the 9 IB Diploma level
Certificates entered, we had 100% success rate. Well done
to all of the students who left us last year and good luck in
your university careers wherever you are around the world.
Administration & Maintenance Staff Lunch
We had a particularly long summer break this year and
many people enjoyed their holidays outside of the
Kingdom. The school remained open throughout the
summer with both the maintenance Team and
Administration Team present. Schools are busy places,
even in the summer: accepting new students, ensuring
essential maintenance jobs are completed and someone
dealing with ministry issues. As a thanks you to these staff,
Mr. Hugo held a lunch of recognition for them at the
beginning of
August. We were
lucky to have the
Founding Board
member, Mr.
Feda Al Khatib
join us for the
occasion.
Behaviour
Management
You will have read the school’s new Behavior Management
Policy in the Handbook. We are excited to be taking a new
approach to student behavior but we do need all of our
children to know the expectations that there are for them
and so please make sure that your child has read the
Handbook and understands what all of the expectations
mean.
School Fees A few parents have still not paid the school fees for this year and we must ask that fees are paid as promptly as possible. If you have not yet paid the fees, please make arrangements to do so immediately.
