Carburetor Sizing
Selecting the Correct Carburetor Size
Formulas for Cubic-Feet-Per-Minute (CFM) Air Flow Re-
quirements. Determining specific airflow requirement forany engine requires only the application of the followingformulas:
Naturally Aspirated Engines (Carbureted)CID x RPM /1728/2 x .85 = CFM RequiredThe engine air-flow requirement determined by this formu-la is at 85% of volumetric efficiency for four-cycle engines. For two-cycle engines double the cubic feet/minute valve.
1. Determine the cubic inch displacement of the enginefrom the identification plate or the user’s manual. (If thedisplacement is known in cubic centimeters, convert tocubic inches by multiplying cubic centimeters by .06102.If in liters, convert to cubic inches by multiplying liters by61.02.)
2. Multiply the figure by the RPM figure corresponding tothe maximum engine speed at wide open throttle. (Usethe point at which the tachometer is redlined. If the en-gine is not equipped with a tachometer, refer to the user’smanual supplied with the vehicle or engine.)
3. Divide this CIM (cubic inches per minute) by 1728 toobtain cubic feet per minute.
4. Divide the result by 2 (for 4 stroke engines).5. Multiply the figure you obtain by .85 For 85% volumetric
efficiency).6. This figure is the precise air-flow requirement for the
engine, accurate to one cubic foot/minute.
Example:351 CID x 4000 RPM = 1,404,000 cubic inches per minute1,404,000 /1728 = 812.5 CFM (2 stroke)812.5/2 = 406.25 CFM (4 stroke)406.25 x .85 = 345 CFM (at 85% volumetric efficiency.
Fuel Injected EnginesDue to improved intake manifold design, use 100% of volumetric efficiency for fuel injected engines.CID x RPM /1728 /2 = CFM required.
Example:351 CID x 4000 RPM = 1,404,000 CIM1,404,000 /1728 = 812.5 CFM (2 stroke)812.5 /2 = 406.25 CFM (4 stroke)406.25 X 406.25 CFM (at 100% volumetric efficiency)
Turbocharged Engines
(with mixer upstream of turbocharger)CID x RPM/1728 x 2 x % boost pressure + 1 = CFM Required
Normal air inlet pressure to the engine is 14.7 PSI (one at-mosphere). Adding a turbocharger merely serves toincrease the inlet pressure. For example, 6 PSI boostequates to 14.7 PSI plus 6 PSI, or a combined inlet pressureof 20.7 PSI (or 140% of one atmosphere) at sea level. Hereis how this works starting with the above formula:I. One atmosphere equals 14.7 PSI.II. 6 PSI boost equals 40% of one atmosphere.III. Thus you must multiply the normal CFM by 1.40 to
establish the requirement for six pounds of boost pres-sure.
Example:351 CID x 4000 RPM = 1404,000 CIM1,404,000 /1728 = 812.5 CFM (2 stroke)812.5 / 2 = 406.25 CFM (4 stroke)406.25 x 1.4 = 568.75 CFM (at 6 PSI boost)In selecting the correct carburetor or mixer from the listing, bear in mind whether the conversion is to be straightpropane or dual fuel (propane and gasoline). All models list-ed are available for straight fuel or dual fuel applications.

The super fix 1 is designed to inform the ECM (ElectronicControl Module), computer and sensors when on alternatefuels that 3 basic computer functions are working properly.Codes 13, 32, 44 and 45 are directly related to problems theSuper Fix 1 can solve.
Features1. Supplies a Rich/Lean O2 feedback signal the ECM. Pre-
vents O2 sensor codes (13, 44, and 45).2. Monitors ECM signals related to exhaust gas recirculation
(EGR) and the fuel system, then it responds with the cor-rect signals. Prevents false EGR performance warningcode (32).
3. Prevents false knock sensor warning code (43) and com-puter limp-mode spark timing retard on alternate fuels, which leads to poor driving, low mileage, and highexhaust temperatures.
The “6M” is designed with direct plug-in capabilities to theengine MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor and obtainsits logic from maifold absolute pressure rather than throttleposition.

Carburetion - Impco Starting Problems
Starting has never been a serious problem when dealingwith straight LP-gas engines. However, with dual fuel appli-cations, especially those under 250 CID, there are many fac-tors that can contribute to hard starting. These are:1. Vacuum and air leaks.2. Incorrect carburetor sizing.3. Improper idle mixture.4. Over richening by start valve.5. Incorrect location of carburetor, regulator, and/or fuelock.
6. Improper location of electric fuelock lead.7. Poor engine condition.8. Incorrect spark plug gap.9. Cold ambient air temperatures.10. Incorrect starting technique.
Vacuum & Air LeaksIn dual fuel applications on small displacement engines, anair leak which would not bother a larger engine becomescritical, especially at cranking speed. Any leak downstreamof the air/gas valve will reduce the amount it will rise off itsseat during cranking. In extreme conditions, air enters through the leak duringthe entire intake stroke, while the gas valve is lifted onlyduring part of the stroke. This creates a mixture too lean toburn. A primer may furnish the added fuel around themetering valve to allow the engine to start, and with morenumerous intake cycles the leak may be overcome.Vacuum leaks may be detected by applications of small
amounts of LP Gas vapor around suspected air leaks down-stream of the air valve. It is suggested that an unlit propanecigar lighter be used, since a small flow is all that is neces-sary. If a leak is located, the engine will speed up, due to thericher mixture. This technique is quite effective around thegasoline carburetor area. Take care to do this out of doors, since adequate ventilation is a must.Air leaks may also be found in the engine, through intakevalve seals or past rings which are not seated. The orifice inthe PCV valve, which is open during cranking and closedunder vacuum, can add a sizable amount of air. Be sure PCVvalve does close properly after engine starts.
Carburetor SizingImpco has found that the CA50-250L or -750L on engines of1600cc & under will give better performance and superiormileage as well as better starting than the CA125. TheCA125-250 and 260 are adequate for engines 100 to 200 CID,the CA300A for 200 to 320 CID and the CA300A-50 for 320CID & over.It is important to correctly size the air flow capacity of themixer to the engine requirement.
Use of a mixer that is too large for the engine displacementmakes idle adjustment extremely sensitive. When the larg-er mixers are applied to smaller engines, enrichment for ac-celeration or power occurs too high in the RPM range to bepractical. The small engine cannot lift the large air valvequickly or as high as a larger engine will.
ber valve contacts the seat and stops turning. Back theadjustment out 3⁄4 turn, re-install elbow. Advance idle speedadjustment screw a turn or so to keep the engine running, then start engine. The idle should be set cold or cool. Adjustthe valve in and out gently to determine where the enginespeeds up (best vacuum). For final setting, slow idle speedto desired setting. When testing between adjustments, place finger over the opening to the idle mixture screw toprevent air entry. Install idle adjustment plug after desiredidle is obtained.Use of the SV start assist valve for priming during crankingis helpful. However, on engines two liters and under, arestriction such as the Impco J1-20 (1⁄16" I.D.) should be used.If these are not available, a spark plug nut, approximately1⁄16" I.D., pushed into the hose, will prevent over priming.Sizing the orifice to the engine can be checked for accuracyby energizing the SV valve separate from the starting cir-cuit. When activated with the engine idling, it may slow thespeed or actually kill the engine. However, if by opening thethrottle it will start in a turn or two, the orifice size is satis-factory.The SV should always connect to air valve vacuum, notintake manifold.
Idle Mixture AdjustmentCorrect idle mixture adjustment is critical to ease of start-ing. This is compounded if the mixer is oversize for theengine. When the idle mixture (air by pass) adjustment isclosed, the air valve will open farther at cranking. Thus theair flow volume remains the same, but gas is increased. If the engine starts hard, check the idle mixture adjustment, following this procedure. Tighten the idle mixture screw in.If the engine starts more easily, slow the engine downwhile adjusting the idle mixture to prevent stalling from anover-rich mixture. Setting the idle mixture to the best idle(high vacuum) cold will give a reasonably lean but satisfac-tory mixture after the engine warms. If the idle adjustment must be backed out excessively inorder to obtain a smooth idle, this may be compensatedfor by installing an R1-29 spacer ring (for CA125 mixer).Placed between the air valve ring (R1-19) and the air valveshoulder, it raises the R1-19 by .003~, thereby increasingair flow at idle. This allows the idle screw to be adjusted into richen the mixture, shutting off most of the bypass airand lifting the air valve farther off the seat during cranking.Setting the idle on a CA300A mixer is touchy on a smallengine because of the large gas valve. With the gas inletelbow removed, screw the idle adjustment in until the rub-

Carburetion - Impco Starting Problems
Location of ComponentsMounting the converter and fuelock off the engine is desir-able when carbureting 4-cylinder engines. The vibration ofthe engine moves the converter rapidly back and forthwhile the secondary diaphragm assembly tends to stay still. This causes the gas pressure to pulse, and can cause excessfuel consumption. The added weight of an LP Gas mixer and adapter on agasoline carburetor, if not properly braced, can combinewith the vibration of a 4-cylinder engine to cause the gaso-line carburetor bolts and screws, etc., to loosen, causing airleaks.Keep the atmospheric vent of the regulator out of the directair stream of the fan. This also can cause fluctuation of thesecondary diaphragm and result in gas pressure pulsa-tions.
Electric Fuelock ConnectionIs often a source of starting trouble. Attaching the electricfuelock power lead to an ignition coil terminal. This is aweak source of current. And, it robs the ignition of neededamperage.
Engine ConditionAs previously mentioned, the engine itself can be a source
of air leaks. Leaking intake seals, poorly seated rings, andleakage through the PCV valve hose are problem areas tobe checked. Beyond these problems, however, the enginemust be in good working order. Check the engine for anyleaks downstream of the air valve. Compression pressureof 150 psi or better at cranking is desirable to prevent hardstarting.
Incorrect Spark Plug GapSpark plugs should be in good condition and gapped to .03"to .032". A protruded nose plug is helpful if it will clear thepiston at the top of its stroke.
Ambient TemperatureAt very cold ambient temperatures (-30°F., -34°C. or below),there may be insufficient vapor pressure in the fuel tank tosupply fuel to the converter/regulator, resulting in no startor hard starting. Another condition which may preventstarting in cold weather involves over priming. If this con-dition is suspected, attempt to start the engine with theprimer disconnected. The primer can be disconnected byremoving the electrical connector or by pinching the fuelhose.
343
Carburetion - Impco Starting Problems
Repair and seal air leaks. Engines with less than 150 PSI compression may require valve grind, valve seals, and/or rebuilding to obtain optimum starting.
Troubleshooting — Hard Starting

investigate the possibility of engine mechanical problems.
Possible cause: poor engine condition.
Check engine for compression of 150 PSI or better at cranking. Inspect for air leaks downstream of
the air valve.
Remove spark plugs and measure for correct gap.
Hose and fittings not leaking. Hose and fittings leaking.
Possible cause: Weak current to electric (gasoline or LP-Gas) fuel lockoff.
Replace leaking vapor hose. Tighten or replace loose fittings.
Possible cause: Incorrect spark plug gap.
Hard starting is apparently not a fuel related problem. Recheck the system and investigate
the possibility of an ignition problem.
Check idle mixture for proper setting. Richen idlemixture as an aid to starting. 300A mixer idle
screw out (counter clockwise) l⁄4 turn. CA425 out one to two turns CA 125, CA 225 idle screw in
(clockwise) two turns.
Idle mixture properly set. Idle mixture out of adjustment.
Possible cause: Oversize carburetion sizing.Refer to "Idle mixture adjustment" section for proper
setting technique.
Verify that airflow capacity of mixer is correctly sized to engine requirement (See IMPCO publication
SL-7 “How to select the right carburetor").

Carburetion - Impco Starting Problems
Carburetor O.K.
Possible cause: Improper idle mixture.
Review proper starting technique with driver.Explain reasons for open throttle conditions.
Fuel supply O.K. No fuel supply.
Possible Cause: Cold ambient air temperatures Check fuel tank valve. Check hose, fittings and VFF30 filter for restrictions.
Verify that there is no over priming. Disconnect SV valve if over priming exists.
Engine does not start. Engine starts.
Circuit complete. Circuit incomplete.
Engine does not start. Engine starts.
Possible cause: Improper starting technique. Insert orifice in 1⁄4" SV valve hose. Refer to "Startvalve enrichment" section.
Possible cause: Lack of priming or over priming(If over priming is suspected refer to
"Cold ambient air temperature").
Possible cause: No fuel supply to convertor.
Insert matchstick into VFF30 atmospheric vent(front cover). Diaphragn within should resistpressure. Indicating fuel supply to regulator.
Verify the condition. Perform visual inspection of fuel systemcomponents and attempt to start engine. Use open throttle.
Test for battery voltage and continuity toground in the electrical primer circuit during cranking.
Jump battery to primer contact.
Primer does not click.
Repair circuit as necessary.
Replace primer.
Primer clicks, engine does not start.
Possible cause: Vacuum and/or air leaks.
Tight mounting. Loose/leaking mounting.
Check for loose carburetor mounting bolts or aleaking mounting gasket.
Check for cracks in the gasoline carburetorhousing (if dual fuel) or intake manifold.
Tighten mounting bolts or replace gaskets.
Cracks noted.
Replace the carburetor or intake manifold.

Carburetion - Lean Idle Condition & Vehicle Electrical System
Impco Lean Idle Condition
Model 425 SeriesThe pictures of the idle diaphragm assemblies show a cor-rect and an incorrect assembly configuration. The assemblywith the straight lever allows normal movement of the Vitonvalve off the valve seat, providing a full opening of the idlegas jet when adjusted rich. The bowed lever reduces avail-able lift off the seat by limiting the travel. The bowed assem-bly can be straightened easily by bending to conform to astraight edge ruler or equivalent. In reassembling the idle diaphragm cover to the body, theidle mixture adjustment screw must be backed out until itis engaged by only three or four threads in the cover. Thiswill allow assembly of the cover to the body and idlediaphragm assembly without bending the tip of the lever.
Incorrect Assembly ConfigurationCorrect Assembly Configuration
After the diaphragm and cover are reassembled, the idle mix-ture adjustment screw may be turned in until the retainerspring is compressed about one third. With the engine run-ning at idle, adjust the screw in or out for best idle vacuum. If the idle mixture is set with a cold motor to the smoothestpossible idle, the mixture when the engine is hot will leanout to a practically ideal mixture for minimum CO readings, without being too lean, thereby causing misfire.
Mak-Saf™
Vehicle Electrical System
The Mak-Saf™ is a UL listed device that allows the isolationof a vehicle’s battery, or alternator from the rest of the elec-trical system by pulling a cable-connected handle. The han-dle can be mounted in the instrument panel or hidden. FeaturesSafety Switch — Ensures a no-start condition particularlyfor equipment used in dangerous atmospheres such as LPtransport vehicles.Prevent Battery Drain — For vehicles like RVs & constructionequipment that are left inoperative for long periods of time.Anti-Theft — Hide the handle in a clever but convenient place.
ApplicationFork lifts, tank transports, off-road construction equipment, cars.
