HOW TO MEASURE YOUR ROUGH OPENING

Important Information

• Use the worksheet on next page (Fig . 7) to record measurements for each rough opening to be replaced . Use additional copies as needed for more windows .

• Record each window’s location in the house on the worksheet in a manner that clearly identifies it .

• If there is more than 1/4" deviation within each set of measurements, investigate the cause and seek professional assistance to correct problems .

• Perform all measurements on each opening before going to the next one .

• Individually measure each existing window to be replaced . Do not assume similar looking windows are exactly the same size .

• Measure accurately, to the nearest 1/8" . If a group of windows on one wall are all very similar in height, consider using the smallest height measurement for all windows in the group . This will maintain a pleasing appearance . This choice; however, could result in additional trim work on installation .

Measure The Width• It is suggested you remove

the finish material from the interior of the rough opening (i .e . casing, sheetrock and/or trim) before measuring . This will allow for a more precise measurement of your rough opening(s) . Measure the rough opening (wood surface to wood surface) in three places: top, middle and bottom (Fig . 1 & 2) .

• Record your measurements from all three locations .

Measuring the Height• It is suggested you remove the finish material from the interior of the

rough opening (i .e . casing, sheetrock and/or trim) before measuring . This will allow for a more precise measurement of your rough opening(s) .Measure height from the head to the sill in three places: left-side, middle and right-side (Fig . 3 & Fig . 4) .

• Record measurements from all three locations .

Confirm Squareness of Rough OpeningConfirm the existing opening is square by measuring both diagonals . If the two diagonal measurements differ by more than 1/4", an out-of-square adjustment in the width of the window must be made (Fig . 5) .

• The adjustment is determined by creating a plumb line (using a level) from each corner to the rough sill or header . Using a plumb line that falls within the window opening, measure the out of square adjustment (Fig . 6) .

• Subtract this measurement from the smallest width measurement . Record this adjusted width as the smallest width .

NOTE: If the existing rough opening sill is not level, or if the existing rough opening is not square and plumb, the installation may be complicated and additional trim work may be needed. Consider professional installation assistance.

REMOVE PACKAGING AND INSPECT WINDOW1Remove PackagingRemove shipping materials such as corner covers, shipping blocks or pads . If there is a protective film on the glass, do not remove it until installation and construction are complete .

Inspect Window• Cosmetic damage .

• Product squareness (diagonal measurements not more than 1/8" to 1/4" depending on window size) .

• Correct product (size, color, grid pattern, handing, glazing, energy-efficiency requirements, etc .) .

• Cracked frame welds or other frame damage .

• Splits, cracks, holes, missing sections or other damage to the brickmould trim longer than 6" and/or within 1/2" of the window frame .

If any of the above conditions represent a concern, or if you expect environmental conditions to exceed the window's performance rating, do not install the window . Contact your dealer or distributor for recommendations .

• Verify the rough opening is level and plumb (C) and (D) . The maximum allowable deviation is 1/16" for every 2' of rough opening (not to exceed 1/8") .

• The rough opening sill must not be crowned or sagged (D), but rather level or sloped (positive slope) to the exterior .

• The exterior face of the rough opening must be in a single plane (E) with less than 1/8" twist from corner to corner .

• Minimum double studs (king and jack/trimmer) should be used to support the header at all rough openings .

For Retrofit InstallationsAfter removing the old window, remove sufficient cladding (siding, stucco etc .) to expose enough intact building wrap to properly seal the window to the opening . If damaged, apply new building wrap in shiplap manner . Verify the rough opening framing is structurally sound . Contact your local waste management entities for proper disposal or recycling of products being removed .

INSPECT ROUGH OPENING2

• Verify the rough opening is 1/2" larger in width and height than the main window frame . Mulled assemblies should be 3/4" narrower .

• Verify the rough opening is square . The (A) and (B) measurements above should be the same . Maximum allowable deviation from square is 1/8" for windows 20 sq . ft . and smaller, and 1/4" for windows larger than 20 sq . ft . (Fig . 8) .

NOTE: Not all conditions will be the same. This document is only a guideline and some modification may need to be made during the installation process. This will only work in a square, plumb and level condition. It is up to the installer to confirm the building codes and regulations meet the specification of their area.

PREPARE STUD-FRAMED WALL3Prepare Window Opening - New Construction Prepare/Inspect Building Wrap -

Retrofit/Remodel Installation

• This set of instructions assumes there is an existing weather resistive barrier (WRB) behind the wall cladding (i .e . lap siding) .

• Additionally, it is assumed that the exterior trim will be removed or the wall cladding will be cut-back to expose the WRB and that flashing will be integrated from the window rough opening onto the WRB .

• Also, it is assumed that exterior trim will be removed or wall cladding will be cut-back far enough to allow the back of the brickmould to make contact with the WRB .

• It is suggested that exterior trim, if applicable, be removed and the WRB inspected to be sound and intact prior to removing the existing window . If the WRB is damaged, or is not present, then a Building Professional should be consulted for advice on how to install the window in a weather tight manner .

Prepare Window Opening - Retrofit/Remodel Application

1 . Measure the “exterior” width and height brickmould dimensions of your vinyl window . Add a 1/2" to each measurement .

2 . Locate the center of the current rough opening, or existing window . From the center, measure out half of the distance recorded above . Do this for both sides, top, and bottom of the opening . Transfer a mark on the exterior at this location (Fig . 13) . Do this for both width and height .

3 . Re-measure between opposing marks to ensure the distance is what was originally recorded, for both width and height .

4 . Place a level on the mark(s) and position as needed to define plumb (sides) or level (head and sill) . Use a straight edge to define a cut line around the opening . Generate a line with the aid of a pencil or chalk line (avoid using permanent staining chalk) .

5 . Set the fence on a cutting tool (i .e . circular saw) to the proper height so to only cut through the wall cladding . Make sure not to cut through the WRB . Cut along the pre-scribed cut lines .

6 . Remove wall cladding and/or trim from inside cut line . Clean debris from around opening .

7 . Remove existing window . Trim back any remaining fasteners so they are flush with the rough opening framing members .

8 . Clean debris from within and from around the opening . Inspect and repair WRB as needed .

NOTE: In the Retrofit application, the siding/cladding will need to be cut back so your new window can be installed. WRB will need to be present and in sound condition.

NOTE: For the purpose of these instructions, it is assumed the rough opening will be prepared in a manner that will prevent air and water from entering the wall cavity/building “prior to” and “after the installation” of the replacement window . Typically this is done by applying flashing from inside the rough opening out on to the WRB .

1 . Install a sill pan in a weatherproof manner on the rough sill (refer to ASTM 2112 for types of sill pans) . Always allow water to drain out of the pan and onto the building wrap, drainage plane or to the exterior .

2 . Use self-adhered flashing or liquid applied flashing to waterproof the sill .

3 . Flashing must have at least 2" of visible material below brickmould . Flashing width must be at least measurement A + B + 2" below sill nose or brickmould .

4 . Measure the width of the frame from the interior to the brickmould (measurement A) and subtract 1/4" . Transfer this measurement from the outside edge of the rough opening and draw a line along the entire rough opening sill . This is where the back of the flashing will sit (Fig . 9 & Fig . 12) .

5 . Cut a piece of flashing the length of the rough sill plus 12" (Fig . 10) .

6 . Place flashing on rough opening sill, wrapping the flashing up 6" on each side jamb as shown (Fig . 11) .

7 . Pull release tape and set flashing into place .

8 . Fold the flashing down onto the sheathing . Mechanically fasten if necessary .

9 . Smooth out any bubbles or creases with a J-roller . Remove and replace if necessary .

10 . Refer to Proper Shimming section prior to installing window .

PREPARE STUD-FRAMED WALL - CONTINUED3Proper Shimming

Shimming of JELD-WEN windows requires a sufficient number of shims to maintain the proper operation of the window as designed . These shimming instructions must be followed to provide proper support to eliminate sagging, bowing or any deflection that may inhibit the proper operation and overall performance of the windows . Shims should remain in place after installation of the window is complete . In regions of the country where ambient air temperatures reach or exceed 95°F (35°C), for more than 45 days, shim at 8" on center (OC) to maintain proper sill alignment in these temperature zones .

NOTE: Shim side jambs as necessary to keep jambs straight and plumb with a 1/4" space for an interior air seal . A minimum of 3 shims are recommended (one shim is needed approximately 4" from each corner and another near the mid-section or interlock of each window) .

9 . Make sure WRB is cut flush with the window opening at all four sides . NOTE: Check with the building wrap manufacturer to verify the following steps will not void their product warranty .

10 . Measure the width of the frame from the interior to the brickmould (see measurement A, Fig 13) . Subtract 1/4" from this measurement and record .

11 . Transfer this measurement from the outside edge of the rough opening and draw a line along all four sides of the rough opening .

12 . Apply flashing to the rough sill (flashing must be the width of the rough sill at minimum) . The flashing should start at the line marked on the inside of the rough opening and extend out on to the WRB to a minimum of where the brickmould portion of the window frame will terminate .

13 . Apply flashing to each side of the rough opening . Flashing should start at the line marked on the inside of the rough opening and extend out on to the WRB to a minimum of where the brickmould portion of the window frame will terminate . Apply a bead of sealant at the bottom of each piece where contact is made with the sill flashing (tool sealant into a smooth joint) .

14 . Apply Flashing to the top of the window opening . The flashing should start at the line marked on the inside of the rough opening and extend out on to the WRB to a minimum of where the brickmould portion of the window frame will terminate . Apply a bead of sealant where contact is made with each side jamb flashing piece AND apply a bead of sealant along the entire top edge of the flashing (tool sealant in a smooth fashion onto the WRB and at each corner) .

15 . Follow prescribed shimming recommendation and refer to Install Window Section for remaining installing steps .

NOTE: Do not over shim as this can cause distortion of the frame .

• The window frame should not be placed directly on the rough sill. Shims should be added to provide a continuous level support of the window sill (to prevent sagging or bowing). Shims should not exceed 1/4" in height (Fig. 14).

• Position the window onto the shims positioned on the RO sill; verify for square, plumb and level .

• Shim each side jamb as needed; jamb requires a maximum 1/4" space per side, to allow proper shimming to hold the window plumb and level through installation (Fig . 15) .

INSTALL WINDOW4Window Installation (New Construction and Retrofit)WARNING! To avoid injury, use at least two people to install. Adequately support the window until completely fastened.

1 . Windows with the Retrofit Brickmould should be fastened with a #8 x 2 1/2" pan head or Truss head screw to allow for a minimum of 1" embedment into a structural member . A longer fastener may be needed dependent on the substrate .

2 . Remove the covers . One end will be loose, they can be pulled out and away from the fastener channel . Use the fastener spacing given in Fig . 21 to mark the proper anchor locations along the indentation within the accessory fastener channel .

3 . Run a continuous 3/8" bead of sealant around the interior side of the brickmould on the side jambs and head . On the sill, leave at least a 2" gap every 8" where it will contact the rough opening (Fig . 18) .

4 . Place window onto the shims and tilt into the rough opening . The window sill must rest on and be fully supported by the shim support (Fig . 19) .

5 . Screw fasteners into the channel at each marked location, following the line inside of the channel .

NOTE: Fastener (anchor) heads must be flush . Do not dent brickmould . Use the following table to find the correct product and fasten it as directed .

2 . Cut drip cap to length, depending on the type chosen you will need to vary your installation method .

3 . Apply sealant on top of the window frame/brickmould as depicted in Fig . 20 .

4 . Center the drip cap on the head of the window . Fasten with appropriate sized nail or screw, if applicable . Apply sealant (i .e OSI Quad Max) along top edge of drip cap and tool into smooth joint .

5 . Leave an expansion/contraction gap of approximately 1/2" between window frame and final exterior wall cladding (siding, stucco, etc .) . For a finished look and additional protection, seal this gap on the sides with backer rod and sealant . If sealant is applied above the drip cap ensure the sealant bead is discontinuous to allow for drainage .
