Each week in the studio they will learn a new painting technique to add to their canvas to produce a finished composition full of color and pattern. Instructor: Carey Hernandez

Lines of All KindsSaturdays: November 4, 11, 18; 10-11:30 amSaturdays: November 4, 11, 18; 10-11:30 amAn exhibition of drawings will show us how artists use lines in exciting and different ways. We’ll look at messy scribbles and colorful sketches to spark our imaginations before creating artworks full of lines in the studio. Young artists will experiment with drawing tools such as pastels, charcoal, and pen and ink. Instructor: CaSandra Johnson

It’s where ideas grow strong and powerful! In this class students will learn to wield the power of a sketchbook with confidence and fill the pages with comic drawings through weekly exercises, challenges, and drawing jams. that rely on color to make their artworks interesting. We’ll borrow brushstrokes, drips, patterns, and painting techniques to create finished

It’s a place to store ideas, doodle and scribble, and challenge yourself to strengthen your skills as an artist. This one-day workshop will teach you simple bookbinding skills to produce a personalized sketchbook for use in future Joslyn classes or whenever you feel the urge to get a little sketchy. We’ll experiment with acrylic and oil paints, colorful inks, stencils, and other techniques to create depth and variety within our abstract canvas paintings. Instructor: Andy Smith

Students will explore a variety of drawing tools, including graphite and charcoal, while learning to render proportion, value, and perspective. Instructor: Ron Sykes

Oil Painting: A Crash CourseThursdays: September 7 (no class September 14), 21, 28, October 5; 6-8:30 pmJoslyn Members: $70; General Public $85Learn the very basics of oil painting through simple geometric still life studies. Students will be introduced to color mixing, under painting, and paint application using a brush and palette knife. Instructor: Cody Wheelock

Learn how to mix and overlay colors, create transparent washes, and practice a variety of brush techniques. Acrylic Painting: Painting LooseSaturdays: September 9, 16, 23, 30; 1-3:30 pmJoslyn Members: $70; General Public $85This class will encourage students to react and respond to paint in order to create artworks without predetermined objectives. Experimentation with altered surfaces, painting additives, thin glazes, and non-traditional tools will ensure unexpected results and spark new ideas as students learn to control acrylic paint. Intro to Digital PhotographySundays: September 10, 17, 24; 1-3 pmJoslyn Members: $42; General Public $52Learn the ins-and-outs of digital photography in this class that will teach you to make the most of your camera’s settings and functions. Students will spend time in the studios and in the Museum’s public spaces to take photographs and explore photographic possibilities. Students need to bring a digital camera.Instructor: Jim Ferguson

Watercolor in the Gardens Mondays: September 18, 25, Oct 2, 9; 6-8:30 pm Joslyn & Lauritzen Members: $65; General Public $80Stop and paint the roses in this class that will teach the watercolor basics. Instruction will combine practice in the studio and plein air experiences within the picturesque settings of Lauritzen Gardens. All classes meet at Lauritzen Gardens.

Workshop: Handmade SketchbooksSaturday: October 7; 1-3:30 pmJoslyn Members: $26; General Public $32A sketchbook is an extension of an artist’s mind. It is a place to record thoughts, playfully doodle ideas, and document experiences. This workshop will teach advance bookbinding techniques to produce a personalized sketchbook for use in future classes or the next time your idea needs a place to land. Instructor: Maranda Allbritten

Drawing with the MastersSaturdays: October 14, 21, 28; 1-3:30 pmJoslyn Members: $55; General Public $65Generations of artists have carefully examined and replicated works of the masters in order to hone their skills and strengthen their rendering abilities. Students will look at examples of these types of drawing studies in a temporary exhibition, then set up drawing horses in Joslyn’s permanent collection galleries to create copycat drawings using special techniques and tricks to accurately mimic the masters.

Drawing the FigureThursdays: October 19, 26, November 2, 9, 16; 6-8:30 pmJoslyn Members: $110; General Public $130Gain confidence with your ability to accurately render the human form in this class that will utilize clothed and nude model studies to teach fundamentals of figure drawing. Students will learn to use graphite pencil, charcoal, and conte crayon to render human proportion and gestural energy. Written adult permission required for students under age 18.Instructor: Ron Sykes

Intuitive DrawingThursdays: October 19, 26, November 2; 6-8:30 pmJoslyn Members: $55; General Public $65Abstract drawings and sketches in a temporary exhibition will encourage students to draw with a stream of consciousness. Using a variety of drawing tools, including pen and ink, colored markers, and more, students will elevate the doodle with mindful marks that relate and react with one other to create areas of rhythm and emphasis. Instructor: Kim Darling

Stylized FiguresSaturdays: November 4, 11, 18; 1-3:30 pm Joslyn Members: $55; General Public $65Artists like Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Romare Bearden were not always interested in rendering perfectly proportioned figures. They used personal style to amplify the sensuous bodies, twisted hands, or sturdy limbs of the people they introduced to the viewer. This class will encourage students to explore personal style through observational drawings of a clothed model using graphite and colored pastels. Instructor: Erin Blayney

Drawing with a BrushThursdays: November 30, December 7, 14; 6-8:30 pmJoslyn Members: $55; General Public $65Preliminary painting sketches and studies in the gallery will show us that not all drawing is done with a pencil.

Through a series of short oil painting studies and exercises in the studio, students will learn to use quick brush strokes to capture a moment in time or to experiment with the subject. Instructor: Cody Wheelock

Drawing with DramaSaturdays: December 2, 9, 16; 1-3:30 pmJoslyn Members: $55; General Public $65Capable artists are able to use value and line to imbue drawings with energy and drama that evokes powerful emotion. Expertly composed values, highlights, and lines seen in

works in the galleries by artists such as Käthe Kollwitz and George Romney will provide reference while students learn to use pencil and charcoal to render dramatically lit models in the studio. Instructor: Megan McLeay
