Next to the lighthouse, in the lightkeeper’s house and the foghorn shed, tour the exhibits about navigation aids and the evolution of sound signals. Across from the lighthouse, visit the new Empress of Ireland pavilion, which presents a 3D show on the shipwreck of this magnificent liner, which claimed the lives of 1,012 people in 1914. The exhibit includes many objects recovered by divers as well as giant scale models of the great liners of the early 20 th century. MATANE LIGHTHOUSE Discover the secrets of the Matane lighthouse in a guided tour up to the top of this 20-metre tower, from which you can observe the daily maritime traffic to the north and the Parc éolien de Saint-Ulric-de Matane (a wind farm) to the southwest. The Société d’histoire et de généalogie de Matane invites you to discover 4,000 years of history through photographs, texts and objects, from primitive stone axes to contemporary navigation instruments. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear the stories of phantom ships and the exploits of the region’s local characters. Note that the lightkeeper’s house also houses the tourist information office. CAP-CHAT LIGHTHOUSE Perched on a cliff next to a cape shaped like a sitting cat, this lighthouse is surrounded by magnificent flowered trails leading to the sea. The lightkeeper’s house contains an exhibit recounting the history of sailing vessels and local maritime heritage. Another building presents a multimedia show on wind, the sea and the life of Cap-Chat residents throughout the ages. LA MARTRE LIGHTHOUSE This lighthouse, which was built in 1906 and remains operational, has a unique wood structure. Take a guided tour to learn about how the lighthouse operates, get a sense of the work done by lightkeepers of old and admire the view. In a nearby building, the Musée des phares et balises (lighthouse and beacon museum) presents a permanent exhibit about the evolution and importance of these instruments for seafarers. The centre also houses temporary exhibits and videos on maritime themes. CAP MADELEINE LIGHTHOUSE Enjoy a guided tour of the lighthouse and museum, whose exhibits detail the history of the founders of Gaspésie and the epic of pulp and paper mills in the early 20 th century. Also on-site: tourist office, information office for salmon fishing on the Madeleine River, Internet café, play and picnic area and craft shop. POINTE-À-LA-RENOMMÉE LIGHTHOUSE Returned home from Québec City in 1997, this lighthouse rests once again on the site of the first maritime radio station in North America, installed by Marconi in 1904. A guided tour of the lighthouse and reconstructed T.S.F. (wireless telegraphy) building will take you back in time. To find out more about early 20th century methods of communication and the history of this area, be sure to visit the two exhibits on-site, Marconi and the Story of Radio Communications and Fame Point: As Time Goes By. CAP-DES-ROSIERS LIGHTHOUSE Accompanied by an interpretive guide, climb to the top of the highest lighthouse in the country and learn about the history and operation of this 37-metre tower that has been standing on the “cape of roses” for over 140 years. POINTE DUTHIE LIGHTHOUSE Among the 23 buildings of the Gaspesian British Heritage Village, discover the Pointe Duthie lighthouse, from which you can admire the superb view over the Baie des Chaleurs. CAP-DE-BON-DÉSIR LIGHTHOUSE The Cap-de-Bon-Désir is a way to discover the Saguenay – St. Lawrence Marine Park. Several interpretation activities are offered on a variety of subjects such as life along the seashore, the underwater world (with naturalist-divers), navigation and regional history. It is also an excellent site for the observation of marine mammals from shore, accompanied by naturalists. Visit the on-site exhibit to learn more about various navigation aids and discover the life of the St. Lawrence estuary in the aquarium. POINTE-DES-MONTS LIGHTHOUSE On the seven floors of the old lighthouse tower, original heritage exhibits tell the stories of the lives of the Pointe- des-Monts lighthouse keepers from 1830 to 1964: facts at a glance about the lightkeepers, the environment, furniture and tools of that era, as well as about indigenous sea lion hunters. ÎLE AUX PERROQUETS LIGHTHOUSE From the Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan or Mingan wharves choose an excursion boat and go to sea in search of marine birds and mammals. During a stop at the Île aux Perroquets, your guide will tell you some of the history of the lighthouse and its keepers, the first of which was the famous Count Henry de Puyjalon (1888-1891). PETITE ÎLE AU MARTEAU LIGHTHOUSE Seafarers owe much to the lighthouse on the Petite Île au Marteau; since 1915, many have avoided being shipwrecked because of it. Relive the lightkeepers’ era by participating in a guided tour and get a taste of history by the light of capailloux lanterns (perforated metal containers with a candle inside). An unforgettable adventure! POINTE CARLETON LIGHTHOUSE At the Refuge du Phare on Carleton Point, naturalist guides will be happy to share with you all they know about the lighthouse, its history and some of the local history, as well as provide any information you may need to make your stay on the Île d’Anticosti a pleasant one. Located on the north side of the island, the Maisons du phare offer eight rooms in two buildings, the lightkeeper’s house and the assistant keeper’s house. The latter includes a kitchenette where you can prepare your own meals; breakfast is served in the other house. POINTE CARLETON LIGHTHOUSE For a comfortable stay on an untamed island, Sépaq Anticosti offers you the Auberge Carleton, formerly the lightkeeper’s house. Rabast refers to an area where boats take shelter to wait out bad weather. POINTE-AU-PÈRE LIGHTHOUSE Enjoy a light meal and refreshing ice cream in the foghorn engineer’s house. CAP-CHAT LIGHTHOUSE In the lightkeeper’s house, the Café des embruns offers specialty coffees and light meals with a local flavour. We therefore designed this brochure to help you organize your own trip along the Lighthouse Trail. With the map and descriptions that follow you will be able to plan a tour that suits your needs, making informed choices about the types of activities you want to focus on and identifying sites where you can sleep or eat.
