Child’s Right to Remain in School of Origin

• All children entering out of home placement have the right to remain in their school of origin (RCW 74.13.550)

• Discuss with the child and caregivers the ongoing educational needs of the child including remaining in the school of origin

• Coordinate with child’s school district for the child to remain enrolled in the school the child is attending

• If not feasible or in child’s best interest to remain in their school of origin child must be re-enrolled in the new school within 3 days

Responsibilities Regarding Education Liaison

Identify an Educational Liaison at the Shelter Care Hearing and follow the volunteer background check process on the liaison for those children in 6th –through 12th grade who meet one of the following requirements:

– Parental rights have been terminated– Parents are unavailable because of incarceration or other limitations– The court has restricted contact between the youth and parents– The youth is placed in behavioral rehabilitative setting and the court

has limited education rights of the parents

Child Health and Education Tracking (CHET) Program

• Conducts an initial screening within 30 days of placement covering:

• Health• Mental Health• Education

• Identifies any long term well-being needs • Provides a baseline for on-going monitoring

Well-Being Domains

• CHET Screeners assess each child in the following five domains:– Physical Health (Medical and Dental)
