Nigeria telecoms – a time oftransition as data segmentbalances out slower revenuegrowth and a new playerenters the market:As Africa’s largest single market, Nigeria remains an attractive, ifcompetitive, telecoms investment option, as service providers lookincreasingly to the data segment in order to balance the costs of sloweroverall revenue growth.

Despite this, the mobile market retains its promise of resilient growth assubscription penetration is projected to increase from below 50% at theend of 2009 to in excess of 80% by the end of 2015.

The Nigerian Communications Commission plays a focal part to theimmediate future of the market. Consistent in its efforts to make chargesmore affordable for consumers, the regulator has set in motion a review oncharges for calls and messaging services. It is also conscious of itsobligation to encourage competition and as such will implement mobilenumber portability as Nigeria becomes only the fourth African country tointroduce (MNP) behind Egypt, Morocco and South Africa. The third keyintervention of the NCC is around SIM-card registration. An immediatedecrease in the number of net additions will be the result in the short-term(as the number of activations becomes fewer than the number ofdisconnections), but this will not last as long as operator resentment thatthey will have to foot the bill for the logistics of the registration process.

At a time of intense competition, service providers are particularlyconscious of the need for customer retention. With this in mind, the idea ofcustomer loyalty is paramount in the minds of the country’s operators, as isthe importance of network quality, brand equity and service value.
