Don‘t miss out on one of the industry’s most

prestigious festivals and explore the new Golden

Prague in October! For its 47th edition, the ITF Golden Prague has introduced numerous reforms, a

key one being the change of date to 16 – 20 October 2010 due to the new plans of a closer

cooperation of the festival with EBU (European

Broadcasting Union) and IMZ (International Music and Media Centre), who this year will be engaged in

an unusual number of events to be held in spring, for example the EBU Summit and the Eurovision Young

Musicians Competition. Those are the coordinates,

but also regarding the media the festival‘s world has changed! Strengthening their support for the ITF

Golden Prague, both EBU and IMZ will be involved in the whole festival programme and its

accompanying events…

For instance, the prestigious Gala premieres have been shifted from the showcase at MIDEM in

Cannes to the festival in Prague. Thus, three

extraordinary Gala evenings entitled Golden Prague

Premieres will be held in the framework of the 47th ITF Golden Prague: a screening of remarkable

premieres that have recently been finished and are to be presented by the creators personally. Find

further information as well as entry forms to the

Golden Prague Premieres at the IMZ website www.imz.at.

Furthermore, the IMZ and EBU are preparing a series of worskhops, discussions and meetings to

accompany the 47th ITF Golden Prague, as well as

several new programmes dedicated to both a professional and the general audience with special

emphasis on

– Exploring the music cultures of selected countries

around the world

– Getting familiar with current superior productions

in the field of modern dance

– Music production for children and youth.

The cycle „TV stations present…“ will showcase productions by TV Cultura Brazil, TV Kultura

Poland, and Armenian television. Director Hans

Hulscher and choreographer Mats Ek are the stars of the series “Tribute to…“, and with the new

programme “In Memory of...”, the festival will pay homage to the work of choreographer Merce

Cunningham. It is a great honour for us that Jiří Kylián has taken over as patron for the dance part

of the accompanying festival programme.

Of course, the whole festival will again be open to anyone interested in high-quality music and dance

CLASART’S COOPERATIONS WITH

CLEVELAND AND ZÜRICH TO BE CONTINUED

Clasart Classic, is continuing its successful collaboration with The Cleveland Orchestra. The

phenomenally acclaimed performance of Mahler's

Des Knaben Wunderhorn under the musical direction of Pierre Boulez was recorded just a few

months before the upcoming 150th anniversary of Gustav Mahler's birth with the cooperation of ARTE.

Guest singers were mezzo-soprano Magdalena

Kožená and baritone Christian Gerhaher. The concert took place in Cleveland's Severance Hall and

was also part of the many international tributes honoring the 85th birthday of Pierre Boulez, who

also celebrated his 45th anniversary with the

Cleveland Orchestra at this occasion. The concert included the Adagio from the 10th Symphony in F

sharp major and the Lieder cycle Des Knaben Wunderhorn.

Also, the cooperation with Opernhaus Zürich is being continued in 2010: The recording of

Humperdinck's Königskinder has just been

completed. Under the musical direction of Ingo Metzmacher, Jens-Daniel Herzog's production drew

storms of ovations from press and public alike. In particular, the vocal artistry and acting talent of

German tenor Jonas Kaufmann were frenetically

applauded. Kaufmann's co-star, soprano Isabel Rey, dazzled in the role of the Goose girl.

SWISS TELEVISION STARS

IThe department Music and Cultural Events from Swiss Television is proud to

present the documentary The Young Gods – Lonely Pioneers in the

framework of the Stars series.

«This is extraordinarily brutal dance music» declared British magazine Melody

Maker in 1987 when rewarding Swiss band The Young Gods with the award “album

of the year”. The group had only begun making music two years earlier in a shared

flat in downtown Geneva. The outcome of the collaboration of a classically trained

guitar player and a computer nerd was a fusion of classical music, French chanson,

and punk. In the year 25 of their existence The Young Gods are still alive and

kicking, and currently working on their 13th studio album.

Lonely Pioneers tells their story using old footage and videoclips, some of them

never seen on TV, and, of course, new material captured in 2008 and 2009. Shot in

High Definition the film shows the group on concert tours in the Netherlands, the

Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland, and on stage with the string quartet

Barbouze de Chez Fior. The film also follows them into their rehearsal studio

where they rebuild their sampling technology, which they had become so famous

for. Lonely Pioneers is a film about extraordinary musicians and their passion for

their work.

VAN WALSUM MANAGEMENT: ALFRED BRENDL AND THE KIT

Alfred Brendel, one of the very greatest classical pianists of our time, retired from public performance at the end of 2008. He is 77. It is a crucial and perhaps difficult time,

though he speaks of the decision with relief. He now devotes more time to teaching. His only pupil is the young prodigy Kit Armstrong, an extraordinary 17 year-old Chinese

American. Kit lives between London and Paris and is studying post-graduate Maths. His exceptional gifts are undoubted: he is not just a technical wizard, but has a mature sense

of musicianship and sensitivity. He has also been composing since the age of 6.

ALFRED BRENDEL & KIT ARMSTRONG: MASTER &

APPRENTICE The film will be about the managing and nurturing of great talent,

the relationship between an old master – who has an appealing childish quality about

him – and his young pupil, showing him the way into the world, through music, telling

him about the ways of study, performance and interpretation, and indeed providing

him with a kind of philosophy of life, or way of being. Alfred and Kit are very different

– not least their age – but there is a love of the bizarre in both of them which has

clearly played a crucial part in making their link so special.

Alfred Brendel & Kit Armstrong: Master & Apprentice is produced and directed by

Mark Kidel. A ZDF commission in association with Artificial Eye.

The film is due for completion by May 2010!

THE MET ANNOUNCED 2010-11 SEASON

Seven new productions, including two company premieres, headline the Metropolitan

Opera’s 2010-11 season, celebrating the 40th anniversary of James Levine’s company

debut. General Manager Peter Gelb and Music Director James Levine announced

plans for the Met premieres of John Adams’s Nixon in China and Rossini’s Le Comte

Ory, the first two installments of Robert Lepage’s new production of Wagner’s epic

Der Ring des Nibelungen, with stagings of Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, and new

productions of three repertory classics by debuting directors – Boris Godunov by

Peter Stein, Don Carlo by Nicholas Hytner, and La Traviata by Willy Decker. With

Nixon in China, Peter Sellars will also make his Met directorial debut, and Bartlett

Sher, director of Le Comte Ory, will return for his third production there following

his recent successful stagings of Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Les Contes d’Hoffmann.

In his 40th anniversary season, James Levine, who has conducted nearly 2,500

performances at the Met, more than any conductor in the company’s 126-year

history, will conduct six operas across a range of repertory. The Met will celebrate the

music director’s extraordinary, record-breaking Met career with historical DVD and

CD releases of his performances, as well as a new documentary film about the

maestro by award-winning director Susan Froemke. Levine will launch the 2010-11

season on Monday, 27 September 2010, with a gala performance of Das Rheingold.

Terfel in his first appearance as Wotan in the U.S. and Stephanie Blythe as Fricka. On

the actual date of his anniversary, 5 June, Levine will conduct Don Carlo with the

company on tour in Japan.

The Met’s conducting roster will feature a number of notable debut artists in the

2010-11 season, including Simon Rattle, who leads Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, and

William Christie, who conducts Mozart’s Così fan tutte. Roberto Rizzi Brignoli,

Edward Gardner, Patrick Fournillier, Erik Nielsen, and Paolo Arrivabeni also make their

Met debuts leading important revivals during the season. Maestros returning to

conduct revivals will include: Marco Armiliato, Andrew Davis, Plácido Domingo,

Riccardo Frizza, Fabio Luisi, Nicola Luisotti, Andris Nelsons, and Patrick Summers.

Highly acclaimed recent portrayals by some of the Met’s most popular stars will be

reprised this season. Star soprano Renée Fleming performs the virtuoso title role of

Rossini’s Armida, then switches gears to sing the Countess in Richard Strauss’s

Capriccio (her first complete account of the role, though she sang the final scene at

en Tauride with Plácido Domingo repeating his noble Oreste. Natalie Dessay once

again offers her brilliant portrayal of the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor, and Elīna

Garanča gives the audience another chance to witness her magnetic Carmen. Anna

20TH IAMA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

22 – 24 April 2010, Cité de la Musique, Paris

The forthcoming IAMA conference entitled “Around Us” (or

“Environ” in the French context) directs a focus onto issues of

environment. It is a term that embraces the broad concept of

man’s interaction with his surroundings and the impact it has on

him. Notably in our field of work, it is the human element that

makes the spaces we inhabit in the performing arts important

to the success of our work. It is how we use our resources,

talents and enterprise to reach people. If we think of this as

"environment" we need to think about the broader context of

where we perform, our impact we make in our communities, on

the artists we manage and the audiences who engage with us. It

is also about the sustainable environment, too, which today we

cannot ignore… The conference will seek to inspire delegates

to think about their work and create a new awareness of what

is "Around Us". The conference committee, namely Catherine le

Bris (Chairman), Director, CLB Management; Emmanuel

Hondré, Director of Production, Cité de la Musique & Salle

Pleyel; Caroline Sonrier, Director, Lille Opera; Pierre Korzilius, Director, Auditorium Musée d'Orsay;

Hervé Boutry, General Manager, Ensemble Intercontemporain decided the best place to stage the

event would be at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, because of the extraordinary environment in which

it sits. The 19th arrondissement is historically a working-class area of Paris. Culturally it’s been rather

derelict, so the venue has had to think hard about how to attract people. The panel sessions at the

conference will take this into consideration and examine environmental areas in architectural, social,

digital and cultural terms.

The digital session at the conference will embrace use of the internet to enlarge and enhance the

concert environment. World music will also get a conference platform. It is another musical

environment increasingly integrated into classical music programming which has the effect of

connecting the concert hall with communities. Another session features Terre Jones of the Wolftrap

Foundation for the Performing Arts reflecting on links between the concert world and green issues.

Other confirmed speakers include: Laurent Bayle, Cité de la Musique; Lamberto Coccioli, Integra,

Rosemary Nalden, Buskaid, Pamela Rosenberg, Berlin Philharmonic; Thierry Beauvert, Director of

Music – Radio France; Vony Sarfati, Productions Internationales Albert Sarfati; Philippe Fanjas,

Association of French Orchestras, Nicolas Droin, Accentus, Douglas Merilatt, New World Symphony

Orchestra and René Martin, Festival Nantes.

IAMA launched its first conference twenty years ago. At the time the association, chaired by Joeske

van Walsum, thought that it would be a good idea to present a conference. When the decision was

Page 20: IMZ NL03 2010

taken and the wheels started to turn, things looked gloomy

until a partnership was launched with the then titled magazine,

International Arts Manager edited by Martin Huber. Thankfully,

the event was a success and so much so that a call for it to be

repeated was made… Today, an average of over 400 delegates

attend and significantly, decision makers in the business. The

conference is not a cultural talk-shop and nor is it an exhibition

based event. It is however, designed to support business

meetings and provide a relevant seminar programme through

voluntary speakers in the sector. Remarkably, over 60% of

attendees are promoters and less than 40% are artist

managers.

Booking is open online at: www.IAMAworld.com/conference

where a schedule and further information can be obtained. For

the first time, there will be a conference twitter, so you can

easily get your daily update on twitter.com/IAMAconference!

MONACO DANCE FORUM AND LES BALLETS DE MONTE-CARLO

From 1 – 17 April 2010, the Monaco Dance Forum and Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo will present their

second series of performances and events

at the Grimaldi Forum, focused around the National Celebration of the Centenary of Les Ballets

Russes in the Principality of Monaco.

After a successful Act I winter season which brought around 25 000 spectators to enter the vast

world of Les Ballets Russes repertoire, the Festival and the 50 dancers of the Monegasque company

continue to assert their complementarity in a powerful way, yet again offering a large audience an Act

II spring season just as exciting and original as the first one. Starting off with Maurice Béjart’s

historical masterpiece The Rite of Spring, the company of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo with the

participation of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Yakov Kreizberg, will

present a choreography focused around Daphnis and Chloe by Jean-Christophe Maillot along with

Ernest Pignon-Ernest and Jérôme Kaplan. Also presented will be another version of Le Spectre de la

Rose by Olivier Dubois, quite an original one as it will involve olfactory senses in collaboration with

the famous Perfumes of Grasse. Act II will pay a special tribute to Merce Cunningham, Robert

Rauschenberg and John Cage, the leading actors in the evolution of choreographic art after Diaghilev.

According to the diversity of programmes introduced by the Monaco Dance Forum, other

performances will also be presented: Jour de Fête, a disconcerting piece staged by Macha Makeïeff

and Jérôme Deschamps, for the first time in Monaco – a

theatre incarnate for the creators of the Logoscope – the

ghost instruments of Xavier Le Roy – or otherwise the new

Flamenco of Israel Galvàn.

Other highlights: 90 young dancers from North and South

America, Asia and Europe will meet up in Monaco to get ready

for the most unique audition in the world : the “Tremplin

Jeunes Ballets” supported by the Fondation Princesse Grace.

More than 25 Directors from professional international

companies in search of new talents will be watching these

young artists individually and moreover within performing

conditions.

Furthermore, the Monaco Dance Forum in collaboration with

Peter Lewton and the ADMR, Association Danse Médecine

Recherche, will organise an international symposium bringing
