The Scott Laureate is different from any Scott we have ever built because it is the first time we have ever designed an instrument to do just one thing - reproduce the J~ne of every musical instrument Jnd the human voice, either on radio broadcasts or records-with a higher degree of tonal perfec- tion than advanced engineering and skill were ever able to ac- complish before. The Scott Phantom and Phil- harmonic are, we sincerely be- lieve, the most complete instru- ments of their kind ever designed and built. They not only have a tonal quality that has made them the choice of the world's leading musicians and music lovers, but also incorporate such a high de- gree of sensitivity that they bring to you programs from elusive or weak distant stations that are quite inaudible on the ordinary type of radio. But there are thousands of other listeners who are chiefly in- terested only in record reproduc- tion and programs from local and semi-distant stations. It is for these enthusiasts that we have de- signed. the Scott Laureate. This does not mean that you will be able to receive only local stations on the Scott Laureate. Although it is not considered a highly, developed long-distance receiver according to the stand- ards of the Scott Laboratories, I nevertheless guarantee that it will outperform any other make of receiver designed for home enter- tainment in a side by side recep- tion test. The final test every new Scott must pass is a very critical one in my own home. This last hurdle each new model must clear has changed many new developments, as I would not give a plugged nickel for. any radio, no matter how remarkable its distance per- formance, if it did not have fine tonal reproduction. I have been listening to the Scott Laureate for over a month. During the past eighteen years many wonderful instruments have come from the Scott Laboratories, but for tonal perfection I have never built anything finer.

The Scott Phantom and Phil-harmonic are, we sincerely be-lieve, the most complete instru-ments of their kind ever designedand built. They not only have atonal quality that has made themthe choice of the world's leadingmusicians and music lovers, butalso incorporate such a high de-gree of sensitivity that they bringto you programs from elusive orweak distant stations that arequite inaudible on the ordinarytype of radio.

But there are thousands ofother listeners who are chiefly in-terested only in record reproduc-tion and programs from local andsemi-distant stations. It is forthese enthusiasts that we have de-signed. the Scott Laureate.

This does not mean that youwill be able to receive only localstations on the Scott Laureate.Although it is not considered ahighly, developed long-distance

receiver according to the stand-ards of the Scott Laboratories, Inevertheless guarantee that it willoutperform any other make ofreceiver designed for home enter-tainment in a side by side recep-tion test.

The final test every new Scottmust pass is a very critical one inmy own home. This last hurdleeach new model must clear haschanged many new developments,as I would not give a pluggednickel for. any radio, no matterhow remarkable its distance per-formance, if it did not have finetonal reproduction.

I have been listening to theScott Laureate for over a month.During the past eighteen yearsmany wonderful instruments havecome from the Scott Laboratories,but for tonal perfection I havenever built anything finer.

THE new Scott Laureate using 18, tubes (including tuning eye and rec-tifiers) is not a simplified or abridgededition of the larger Scott Phantom andPhilharmonic models, but an entirelynew design built for a specific purpose-the finest high fidelity reproduction ofrecords and local or semi-distant AMbroadcast and FM stations.

It incorporates every feature that pro-

vides the quality of tonal reproductionfor which a Scott is famous in all partsof the civilized world, and has been de-signed for those who want the ultimatein radio and record reproduction, butwho are not particularly interested indistant foreign reception.

While it is true that the Scott Laureateis capable of bringing in, with good loud-

speaker volume, programs from broad-casting stations in all parts of thecountry and from short wave stationsthousands of miles distant, it has notbeen designed as a long distance receivbut primarily as a fine musical instru-ment for the reception of programs fromlocal or semi-distant stations, and for thefinest possible reproduction of records.

A recent survey among radio listenersshows that only a small fraction of 1%;gularly tune in the experimental and

"hort wave stations below 19 meters orthe commercial long wave bands, but thatabout 95ro of all tuning is on the regularbroadcast band. About 4% listen regu-larly on the 19, 20, 25, and 31 meterbands where the principal short wavestations of the world are located. Un-doubtedly, as more of the new highfidelity FM stations go into operation,this ratio will change, and ultimatelymore listeners will tune the FM bandwhere the tonal range is nearly twicethat of our present broadcast band.

The new Scott Laureate is designednot merely for today's broadcasting con-ditions but for those of the future, andcovers the following wave bands:

( 1) The regular AM broadcast band(540 Kc to 1,600 Kc) includingall High Fidelity stations at thehigh end of the band.

(2) The new FM or FrequencyModulation band (42 Mc to 50Mc) covering the completeauthorized spectrum for FMbroadcasts

(3) The standard short wave band(9.2 Mc to 15.6 Mc) which in-cludes the 19, the 20, the 25, andthe 31 meter bands on which themajor short wave programs of theworld are transmitted.

tern of FM (Frequency Modulation).broadcasting, which transmits all pro-grams with greatly increased fidelity.The Scott Laboratories were among thefirst to design FM receivers and havelong passed beyond the stage where theFM section is merely an external orseparate FM tuner.

When short wave listening first be-came public, listeners bought a smallshort wave converter which was con-nected to their regular receiver. Later,when interest in short wave listeningbecame general, the short wave sectionwas engineered into the receiver as anintegral pal't of the chassis, and fromthe Scott Research Laboratory came oneof the first "all wave" receivers thateliminated the external short wave tuner.

Once again the Scott Laboratories areleading the way in the design of receiversfor FM reception, for in the Scott Lau-reate you will find a highly efficient andadvanced PM section engineered intothe receiver as an integral part of thechassis rather than an external or sep-arate tuner, enabling you to tune in FM,standard broadcast, and short wave pro-grams on the one dial.

as 30 cycles up to as high as 15,000cycles, and when used with the new ScottCoaxial Speaker System, reproducesevery single tone and overtone the hu-man ear is capable of hearing.

This simply means that when youlisten to a station transmitting the fullband of audio frequencies or to highfidelity records, you hear every tone andovertone just as clearly and beautifullyas you would hear them if you were inthe concert hall itself with the actualartists or instrumentalists.

Few musicians or lovers of good musicare radio engineers or have the trainingto interpret the laboratory curves shownon page 9 which show scientifically justhow perfectly an instrument will repro-duce musical frequencies, but everymusician knows that if all the tones andovertones 0f musical instruments orvoices are not fully reproduced, the re-production will not sound natural.

You may often have wondered whyradio programs or records heard on oneradio sound so much finer, clearer, morenatural than they do on another. Theanswer is very simple: The instrumenton which the reproduction is so muchbetter has a more highly developed audioand speaker system. In the final analysis,the perfection of reproduction obtainedfrom any radio receiver or record repro-ducer depends largely on these two units.Below you will find two charts givingthe overtone range of various musicalinstruments and voice, and they showclearly why reproduction is so perfect onthe Scott Laureate with its ability toreproduce every overtone from 30 to15,000 cycles.

Complete Volume Range Repro-duced Without Distortion

Most music lovers, never having heardthe phrase "power output" or "powerhandling capacity" do not realize its tre-mendous importance in securing thefinest and purest tonal reproduction fromeither records or broadcast programs.

If an audio amplifier does not havesufficient "power output," you will noticethat certain passages of a fine musicalprogram or record sound slightly dis-torted or fuzzy. You may perhaps haveblamed this effect on the station to whichyou are listening, on the record itself, oreven on the loudspeaker, never realizingthat it is because the "power output" ofthe audio amplifier incorporated in yourinstrument is simply too small to"handle" the louder passages.

Perhaps the following illustration willclarify just what we mean by lack of"power output." Some years back auto-mobile engines were of comparativelylow power and not particularly efficient.When you were driving on a flat levelroad they ran quite smoothly, but whenyou started uphill they would labor andjerk to such an extent that you had toshift into a lower gear.

Today all automobile engines havemuch higher power, not nexessal'ily toenable you to travel at 90 or 100 milesper hour, but to provide a sufficient l'e-serve power so that their operation issmooth at all speeds, uphill or down.

The low powered automobile enginesof a few years back may be comparedto radio receivers or record reproducershaving a power handling capacity offrom five to six watts (the power of theaverage radio sold today) while the mod-ern automobile with its high poweredengine is comparable to an instrumentsuch as the Scott Laureate. Its 25 wattsundistorted power output reproduce1severy shade of expression or volumerange from the softest to the loudestpassage-exactly as you would hear themplayed or sung were the artists beforeyou.

Why Four Stage Push Pull AmplifierIs Incorporated in Scott LaureateThe fidelity of a radio receiver may

cover the complete audible range of thehuman ear, but if a fine musical programor record is distorted or fuzzy becauseof insufficient "power output" in the re-ceiver, this fidelity range is of little value.Inasmuch as the Scott Laureate is de-signed to give the finest possible repro-duction of programs on the broadcast orFM band, as well as on records, no ex-pense has been spared to make it as per-fectly toned an instrument as skilled,advanced engineering can make it.

Incorporated in its design is everybasic circuit and feature th'lt is used tosecure the marvelous tone in t.he ScottPhilharmonic, the instrument that is

today generally recognized as the ulti-mate in tonal perfection.. In the inexpensive type of receiver, a

smgle stage of audio amplification isused, but a serious disadvantage is thegreat amount of distortion which occurson programs having wide volume varia-tions, such as symphonic broadcasts.The average medium priced radio re-ceiver incorporates two audio stageswhile a few of the very high pricedmodels employ three stages of audioamplification.

However, in the Scott Laureate, fourstages of audio amplification are used,to develop a power output rating of 25to 40 watts, approximately five timesthe power output of the average radioreceiver or record player combination.

New Type Bass Control SystemThe fidelity of all radio stations or

records, is not the same. On some pro-grams or records you will notice thatthe bass is very heavy and boomy, whileat other times you miss it entirely. Tosecure the most natural reproduction thebass response should be natural, neithertoo heavy nor to) light.

The 15" Standard High Fidelity HeavyDuty Speaker Used in the Scott Laureate

In the Scott Laureate is incorporateda new and highly efficient bass controlwhich is the result of extensive researchin our Laboratories. It amplifies or re-produces only the bass or lower tones,having no effect on the middle and highertones or overtones.

When the bass control on the averageradio receiver is operated, the reproduc-tion often becomes very boomy, givingmerely the impression of more bass onall programs whether they contain anyappreciable number of bass frequenciesor not. When you operate the Bass Con-trol on the Scott Laureate it builds upthe bass tones only, giving the repro-duction a full rich quality. However, ifthe program or record you are listeningto has little or no bass tones, then the

operation of the bass control on the ScottLaureate will have little or no effect.

This fact is a simple means of provingthat the new Scott Laureate bass systemamplifies only the bass frequencies. Aftall, what the critical music lover wanLis not an artificial bass quality, butrather a complete accurate reproductionof the original and that is exactly whatwe provide in the Scott Laureate.

An examination of the Laboratorvfidelity curves shown on page 9 wiilgive some idea of the wide range of thisnew Bass Control System.

Perfected Treble ControlOn direct studio programs the fidelity

o.n most broadcast band stations is prac-tIcally flat out to 8,500 cycles, the limitof fidelity allowed by the FCC for sta-tions on the broadcast band. On FMst~tions, however, approximately twicethIS range, or frequencies up to 15,000cycles, can be transmitted.

Built into the Scott Laureate is avariable Treble Control which is avail-able not only on programs received overthe air but also on records as well. Thiscontrol enables the listener to compen-sate for certairi deficiencies in broadcast-ing and recording.

For example, when listening to a chainprogram, the higher frequencies are gen-erally reduced to less than 6,000 cyclesby the telephone lines over which the ~program comes to your local station. Iithis case, by advancing the Treble Con-trol, the higher frequencies that do comethru can be amplified so that the natural-ness of reproduction is greatly improved.

New Standards of RecordReproduction

One of the chief reasons why many ofthe world's leading symphony orchestraconductors, celebrated instrumentalists,and vocal artists have chosen a Scottfor their own personal use is for itsmarvelous reproduction of records. Theseartists listen critically to their own re-corded works, and it is absolutely neces-sary that the reproduction be as near aspossible an exact duplicate of the originalso that every minute detail of the per-formance may be checked and studied.

This means that not only must the re-production of all tones and overtones beperfect, but what is eqmJly important,the delicate shadings, the wide dynamicvariations in volume, the details of ex-pression and interpretation must bereproduced clearly and without theslightest distortion. In the Scott Lau-reate the record enthusiast will find thekind of reproduction that will bring himuntold pleasure for many years to come.

Highly Developed Inverse Feed-Back System Further Improves

Quality of ReproductionTheoretically, the response of the per-

trically would take the form of a straight·horizontal line on a graph. In practice,however, the response curve of even thefinest loudspeaker available today devi-

ces considerably from this ideal straightline. Every "peak" in the curve indicatesthat the speaker falsely accentuates tonesat this frequency, while every "dip" orvalley means that tones in this registerare attenuated or made softer than theoriginal. Such variations in the repro-duction are, of course, forms of distor-tion which can never be countenanced bykeen judges of musical values.

In the Scott Laureate, an improvedsystem of Inverse Feed-Back is usedwhich automatically smooths out the"peaks" and "dips" in the speaker re-sponse, restoring the unduly accentuatedor attenuated tones to their originalproportions so that they are heard justas naturally as when they entered theloudspeaker.

Heavy Duty High Fidelity 15"Speaker Reproduces All De-

grees of Volume WithoutOverloading

The large, heavy duty, High Fidelity15" speaker of the Scott Laureate, isprobably one of the most highly de-veloped speakers incorporated in anyradio receiver available today, reproduc-ing frequencies up to 9,000 cycles, afidelity range far beyond that of theirdinary type of loud speaker. It in-corporates the very latest developmentsin loudspeaker design with a curvilinearcone and heavy voice coil which enablesit to handle without distortion even theloudest passages.

Special Scott Co-axial SpeakerAvailable for Reproduction

Up to 15.000 CyclesIf you are interested primarily in

securing the finest reproduction possiblefrom regular AM broadcasting stations,the new FM stations which transmitfrequencies up to 15,000 cycles, and thelatest high fidelity records, the SpecialScott Co-axial Three Unit Speaker Sys-tem is recommended. This is a specialsystem that consists of a low frequencyspeaker, a high frequency reproducer anda special dividing network. The latterunit shunts frequencies from 30 to 6,000cycles to the large 15" speaker, and thosefrom 6,000 to 15,000 cycles to the highfrequency reproducer providing uniformfidelity thruout the entire tonal range.This new speaker system especially de-signed for the high fidelity character-istics of the Scott Laureate, can be fur-nished at an additional cost of $19.50.Its fidelity range is shown in figure 6,

This highly specialized loop antennashould not be confused with the con-ventional type generally furnished withmost receivers using a loop antenna, forthere are several major differences. In-stead of only one simple loop as isusually the case, the Scott Duplex Loop

Antenna is actually two separately tunedloops. One of these loops is speciallydesigned for reception on the broadcastband, while the other is especially de-signed for shortwave reception. Thisprovides not only finer local receptionwith a minimum of interference fromother stations, but also much greatersignal pickup when tuning foreign shortwave stations.

While the Scott Duplex Antenna Sys-tem furnished with the Scott Laureateis much more efficient than the conven-tional loop, connections are provided forconnecting the Scott Super DoubleDoublet Antenna System, so that dis-tant stations can be brought in with goodvolume. Binding posts are also providedto which can be connected the especiallydesigned dipole antenna for FM broad-casts if you require additional pickupfor FM programs.

Good Tone Only One Factor inFine Local Reception

It should be remembered that goodlocal reception is determined not onlyby the quality of reproduction, but alsoby its freedom from interference andextraneous noises. Every location has acertain amount of electrical apparatuswhich often causes disturbances in thereceiver even when it is tuned to localstations. What is really bothersome isnot the noise itself, but rather thestrength or intensity of the noise ascompared with the strength or intensityof the incoming broadcast. Therefore, itfollows if we increase the strength ofthe broadcast, the effect on your earsis exactly the same as if you had reduced

the strength of the noise by this sameproportion. One way to increase thesignal strength without a correspondingincrease in noise is by installing theScott Super Double Doublet AntennaSystem which is so designed that it feedsa signal into your receiver many timesstronger than it is possible to secure withthe most efficient loop ever designed.

Tuned RF Amplifier Provides FinerLocal Reception

The new Scott Laureate incorporatesone of the most highly efficient tunedRF stages ever built into a receiver, forits design is such that it develops a gaintwice as great as two ordinary RF stages.

The less expensive receivers use noRF stage at all on account of the costinvolved. The average high grade radioemploys only a two-gang condenser,which makes it necessary to use anuntuned RF stage. In the Scott Lau-reate a three-gang variable condenser isused so that the RF stage may be tuned,and in addition the full gain of the RFtube is available, as the RF coil isshielded, instead of exposed and un-shielded, as is usually the case.

Many people may wonder why we usea Tuned RF stage in a receiver designedspecially for the reception of local andsemi-distant stations. There are threereasons for this. First, because it pro-vides an increase in signal strength with-out a corresponding inC1'ease in receivernoise, thus contributing to a betterSignal-To-Noise Ratio.. Second, an efficient tuned RF stage

increases receiver selectivity, a very im-portant point for the local-station lis-tener. Naturally, when listening to afine musical broadcast you do not wantthe reception marred by another stationwhich can be heard in the background.The extra selectivity provided by thehighly developed Scott RF stage makesit possible to eliminate such adjacentstation interference entirely, or at leastto reduce it to a level where it is virtuallyimperceptible.

Third, the highly developed tuned RFstage provides much smoother reproduc-tion of all broadcasts inasmuch as itdoes not cause fuzziness, whistling, ordistortion which is often caused bypowerful stations on adjacent channels.

Two Precision Engineered IF StagesIncorporated In Scott LaureateIn a fine receiver designed for local or

semi-distant station listening, an IFamplifier is required with sufficient Sensi-tivity and Selectivity to prevent theoverloading and distortion which oftenmars an otherwise beautiful program onordinary receivers. The use of a twostage Iron Core IF Amplifier, incor-porating two tubes, is an ideal solution,and this is the system employed in thenew Scott Laureate. It not only pro-vides ample Sensitivity and Selectivity

for the reception of local or semi-distantstations, but also eliminates the over-loading and distortion present in a re-ceiver having only one stage of IF Am-plification.

Variable Selectivity Provided forEither Local Station or

Distant ReceptionThe chief purpose of a variable Selec-

tivity Control is to enable the listenerto select a distant station which is ad-jacent in frequency to powerful locals,and receive it without interference.

If a receiver does not incorporate avariable Selectivity Control, the designof the set must be a compromise on (1)the broad degree of Selectivity that isrequired for the most desirable highfidelity reception on local stations, and(2) the sharp degree of Selectivity forthe reception of distant stations.

As a result of this compromise thetuning is too "sharp" to provide the fullfidelity the receiver is npable of giving,yet too "broad" in certain cases whenextreme selectivity is necessary. Thevariable Selectivity Control enables thelistener to change the band width toobtain the finest possible reception fromeither local or distant stations.

Each section of the radio receiver actsas a sort of highway or channel thruwhich the incoming broadcasts mustpass. Obviously, if these channels arenot wide enough, as in the case whereno variable Selectivity Control is pro-vided to adjust the band width, someof the tones of the broadcast are choppedoff, and the result is that you do nothear the important characteristic over-tones which give timbre and individu-ality to voice and music.

By means of the Variable SelectivityControl incorporated in the Scott Lau-reate, the Selectivity may be varied sothat in the minimum or sharp positiononly a very narrow channel of fre-quencies is admitted, whereas in thebroad position the full band width is ad-mitted, allowing the complete overtonerange of a high fidelity broadcast topass thru.

This means that it is possible to ad-just the receiver so that the maximumfidelity can be secured on every program.

Short Wave Band Brings the Newsof the World Direct

THE Scott Laureate is an 18 tube. superheterodyne receiver providing

for AM reception in the broadcast bandof 540 to 1600 kilocycles, the short waverange of 9.2 to 15.6 megacycles whichincludes the 19, 25 and 31 meter bands,and for FM reception in the assignedband of 41 to 50 megacycles.

Completely separate tuning sectionsare employed for the AM and FM re-ception. The AM section consists ofone r.f. stage, one combination mixer-oscillator, two stages of i.f. amplifica-tion and 2nd detector-A VC. The FMsection consists of one r.f. stage, onecombination mixer-oscillator, two stagesof i.f. amplification, one limiter stageand a discriminator frequency detector.Either of these tuner sections may beswitched to the input of the four stage25 watt audio amplifier.

Mixer Oscillator StageA 7J7 loctal type tube serves as a

combined mixer and oscillator. Themixer characteristics of this tube arealmost identical with those of the 6L 7Gtype which has been used in other Scott

models for several years. The combina-tion mixer oscillator feature is appliedin its most efficient and stable form byusing a mixer tube designed for mini-mum reaction between the signal andoscillator circuits. The mixer and oscil-lator sections of the 7J7 are in realityseparate tubes in one envelope with aninternal connection similar to that usedexternally between the 6L7G and the6J5G.

The components associated with theoscillator have been designed to reducepossibilities for frequency drift to aminimum.

The Intermediate FrequencyAM Amplifier

The I.F. stages tuned to 455 K.C.employ a 6K7G tube in the first amplify-ing stage and a 6B8G tube in the secondamplifier, second detector and AVCcircuit.

Four degrees of variable selectivityare provided for combination with anaudio treble control to provide sevensteps of audio high frequency variatioThe selectivity and bandwidth data ,shown in Figure No.2. It will be notedthat adequate selectivity is available forseparating closely sp:iced short wavesignals, with a degree of variation whichallows for maximum high fidelity per-formance in the broadcast band.

2nd Detector and AveThe 6B8G, which functions as the

2nd i.f. amplifier, also contains diodeswhich are used to rectify the incomingAM signal, producing audio voltage anda D.C. voltage suitable for automatic

volume control. Thelatter is accom-plished by applyingthe d.c. diode volt-age back to the gridcircuits of the r.f.mixer and 1st I.F.tubes all of whichhave variable gaincharacteristics.

To simplify the problem of an-tenna installation the Scott Laureate isequipped with a built-in duplex loopaerial capable of good signal pickup inboth the broadcast and shortwave bands.Each of these loops form a part of theinput tuned circuit in their respectivebands and, therefore, a maximumamount of the available signal is fedto the grid of the r.f. amplifier tube.A high Q, consistent with stability, alsocontributes to the most efficient utiliza-tion of the incoming signal. Provision ismade for the connection of an externalor outside aerial tothe receiver, so thatsatisfactory resultsmay be obtained inremote locations orwhere optimum re-sults on the shortwave bands aredesired.

Radio FrequencyAmplifier

R. F. amplifica-tion is provided bya 6SK7GT tube em-ployinga tuned platecircuit in both AMbands. By this ar-rangement an imageand spurious signalrejection ratio com-parable to that ofthe Phantom Deluxe

The R. F. AmplifierA 6AB7 high mutual conductance

pentode provides an efficient gain in theultra high frequency range. It is alsopreferable to certain other types whichload the antenna circuit excessively. Thecombined aerial circuit and d. stagegain is adequate for an optimum signal-to-noise ratio on weak FM signals.

The FM Mixer-OscillatorThe 6SA7 tube employed as a mixer

and oscillator in combination functionsto permit maximum d. stage gain be-cause of its reduced loading effect on thesignal input circuit. The use of a com-posite oscillator also results in the in-troduction of sufficient oscillator voltagefor optimum conversion ratio withoutresort to coupling methods conduciveo frequency instability.

The oscillator circuit is temperaturecompensated for frequency drift by aspecial resistance-capacity combinationwhich responds to temperature varia-tions within the receiver.

The Intermediate FrequencyFM Amplifier

Two stages of IF tuned to 5.25 mega-cycles are equipped with 6AC7 typetubes, which furnish the maximum stagegain obtainable at this frequency forFM reception. Each circuit is properlyloaded to provide the correct degree ofbandpass for the wide band signal, whichswings over a maximum of 150 K.C.

The Limiter StageLimiter operation is essential in an

FM receiver if minimum distortion andminimum noise are to be obtained underall conditions. This action also servesto provide the equivalent of an almostperfect AVC system.

A 6SJ7 tube operating as a combina-tion grid and plate circuit limiter holdsthe i.f. voltage input to the frequency

etector constant above a predeterminedevel.

The Frequency DetectorA balanced diode type discriminator

detector recreates a linear high fidelityaudio signal from the wide band. FM

signal. Maximum audio output andoptimum balance to noise disturbancesresult from the circuit arrangement.

A 100 micro-second de-emphasis cir-cuit follows the audio diode load andrestores the audio frequency level to thehigh fidelity characteristics of the FMstation program.

The First Audio StageThe chief function of the 1st audio

stage is to provide amplification witha wide degree of possible variation atboth ends of the audio frequency spec-trum, so that a practical degree of bassand treble control may be realized.

The bass compensation is effected bymeans of a resistance-capacity combina-tion in the plate circuit of the first audiotube. The degree of bass response isregulated by varying the amount ofresistance in the bass load circuit. Theeffect of the electrical bass compensa-tion is shown in Figures Nos. 3 and 4.

A 6J5G tube is used in this stage.

The Second Audio StageThe second audio stage employs a

6J5G tube as a plate-cathode type ofphase inverter. This circuit is the mostreliable one from the standpoint of main-taining balanced conditions. Low re-sistance loads in both the cathode andplate circuits supply the audio inputvoltage for the following audio driverstage, without loss of high frequencyresponse.

The Audio Driver StageA 6C8G tube (two triodes in one

envelope) acts as a high gain push-pulldriver stage preceding the 6L6G outputtubes. Since it consists of two balancedhigh gain triodes, its output circuit ismost suitable for a balanced negativefeedback from the plate circuits of the6L6G tubes.

The Output Power AmplifiersTwo 6L6G tubes operate in push-pull

with about 20% of their respective out-put voltage fed back from the plate tothe grid circuit for the reduction ofaudio distortion and hum voltages. Thisfeedback arrangement is the type whichincreases the damping in the plate cir-cuit and consequently reduces transientdistortion in the loudspeaker system.

Two 6L6G tubes operated in thismanner provide an undistorted audiooutput of approximately 25 watts and amaximum audio output of approximately40 watts. In Figure No.5, the curve ofpower output VS. audio input voltage atthe phonograph terminals is shown. Itwill be noted that the linearity indicatesnegligible distortion and the high powersensitivity assures satisfactory operationwith low level crystal phonograph pick-ups.

Up to quite a short time ago it wasnot thought possible to successfully re-cord tones lower than about 80 cyclesper second, nor higher than approxi-mately 4,000 cycles. Today, however,the finer high fidelity records have afrequency range of from about 30 upto as high as 10,000 cycles, nearly threetimes that of the older records.

Two Types of Pick-ups Used inRecord Changer

Two types of pick-ups are generallyused today in record changers, theCrystal pick-up and the Magnetic pick-up. The former is used in practicallyevery standard record changer, whilethe Magnetic type of pick-up is em-ployed in the higher priced deluxemodels. Provided the Crystal pick-up isa high grade unit and is scientificallycompensated, its reproduction is a veryclose approach to that of the Magnetictype. However, for extremely criticalears and the finest possible record re-production the deluxe changer withthe Magnetic pick-up head (the sametype used in broadcasting studios) isrecommended.

Purpose of the Pick-upThe purpose of the pick-up in a record

changer is to track the needle in therecord groove, then convert the delicatemagnetic vibrations cut into this grooveinto electrical impulses to be reproducedthrough the loudspeaker. From a mus-

ical standpoint the pick-up is the mostimportant unit of any record playingmechanism. No matter how fine theradio may be, it can reproduce only whatthe pick-up transmits to it.

The Crystal Pick-upThe Crystal pick-up heads incor-

porated in both the Garrard Standardand the Imperial record changers arespecially Compensated Rochelle Crystalsgiving especially fine reproduction. Thepeaks and dips in the crystal responseare effectively smoothed out without inany way affecting those portions of thefrequency curve which are accuratelyreproduced.

Magnetic Pick-up Used onGarrard Deluxe Model

The Magnetic pick-up head incor-porated in the Garrard Deluxe recordchanger is, we believe, superior by aconsiderable margin to any similar typeavailable today. Brief Description ofRecord Changers

The two record changers we furnishare illustrated on this and the precedingpage. One instrument, the Imperial, isundoubtedly one of the most efficientand well made units of its kind availableat the present time. The other, the Gar-rard, is a real precision instrument andis furnished in two models-the Stand-ard and the Deluxe.

Both changers are extremely simpleto operate and virtually fool-proof. Youcan play any number of records up tothe full capacity of each machine bysimply loading them in the magazine andstarting the changer in operation, thusproviding nearly one hour of continuousentertainment. Each record automati-cally settles on the turntable and thepickup arm is slowly lowered by thechanger to its correct starting positionon the record. In the new improved sound board unitgreater efficiency has been secured byusing a special cone mounted on theback of the main sounding board. Why More Natural ReproductionIs Secured

Like many great inventions the prin-ciple behind the Scott-Tauscher SoundBoard Unit is very simple. The reasonthe reproduction of all musical in-struments and voice sound so much morenatural with the new sound board unit ascompared with the reproduction thatcomes directly from the cone of thespeaker, is because the higher frequen-cies or vibrations, instead of reachingyour ears in concentrated beams ofsound directly from the funnel-shapedcone on the loudspeaker, are evenlydistributed over the whole surface oj thesound board unit installed in front ofthe speaker, reaching your ears just asnaturally as they would were the artistplaying or singing directly before you.

The graphic diagram shown belowmakes it quite clear why the distribu-tion of all musical tones and overtonesis so much more perfect when the Scott-Tauscher Sound Board Unit is installedin front of the speaker. A beam from aflashlight with its curved reflector is,as you know, largely concentrated in asmall spot directly ahead with only asmall amount of light outside the mainbeam. This is what happens to a largeextent with the higher overtones in musicreproduction. They come from the cen-ter of the speaker and are concentrated,largely, directly in front of it. This ex-plains why you hear these higher tonesso much better when you are seateddirectly in front of the radio, and whythey gradually become weaker if youmove over to the side of the room.

But suppose you take the curved re-flector out of your flashlight and flattenit out, then place the bulb in the center.You would then find that instead of thelight being concentrated in a small spoton the wall, it would be evenly dis-tributed over the whole wall. This isexactly the same effect you secure withthe higher overtones when the Scott-Tauscher Sound Board Unit is fitted infront of the speaker.

When the music of an orchestra orartist is broadcast, the musical soundsfrom the various instruments or theartist are collected by the microphoneand fed into the transmitter at thebroadcasting station. The transmitterthen sends them out on the air to bepicked up by your antenna. When youlisten to the music of an orchestra or anindividual artist in your home, it isnecessary to reproduce these sounds thrua radio speaker, but owing to the "V"shaped cone of the speake1', the distribu-tion of these sounds will vary accordingto where you sit in the room.

Defense NeedsLast week we received our first order

for national defense from the UnitedStates Signal Corps, and expect fromnow on more and more of our facilitieswill be required for the building ofspecial receiving equipment for theArmy. This simply means we will onlybe able to build a very limited numberof receivers for private use, for defenseneeds come first.

Here's what the OPM in Washingtonhas to say about the amount of radio

... and electronic equipment that will berequired for national defense: "Esti-mates made in Washington indicate thatdefense orders for equipment in theelectronics field now total about $140,-000,000, of which $46,000,000 is forradio equipment. Since one-third of theappropriated money has now been con-verted into orders," there) is reason tobelieve that another $300,000,000 to$400,000,000 will be placed in the in-dustry for delivery in the next twoyears."

This means that even if an amplestock of the materials required to buildradio receivers were available, it seemscertain that the huge amount of equip-ment required by the Army will soonmake it necessary for every radio manu-facturer to devote a large part of his"plant to defense orders.

Washington Restricts AluminumUsed in Radio Receivers

Some indication of the difficulty that

receiver manufacturers are experiencingin securing supplies of the essential ma-terials will be seen by recent develop-ments reported in the May 1941 issueof "Radio Today": "Radio and manyother industries are facing sharp cur-tailment of aluminum ... nickel, zinc,and copper in varying degrees. Involvedare problems of reduced radio produc-tion ... Putting radio in Class B7, OPMpriority orders on April 18 restrictedradio and all communications appara-tus to a limitation of 30 per cent (onaverage 1940 deliveries) of aluminumfor May requirements, providing alu-minum is available for civilian purposesbeyond mounting defense requirements.Immediately affected is production ofradio condensers, tubes, speakers, andother components."

For many months we have been atwork in our Research Laboratory on theScott Laureate, a receiver designed prin-cipally for the purpose of bringing toyou, with the highest degree of tonalperfection, the world's finest music,either on programs over the air or onrecords. This new receiver, with thehighly developed Scott Phantom andPhilharmonic, would have made it pos-sible for us to build you an instrumentthat incorporated just exactly what yourequired and no more.

A Difficult DecisionBut we are compelled today, owing to

the shortage of aluminum, nickel, zinc,and copper to make a very importantdecision: Should we use the reducedamount of material we will be able tosecure in future months to build a fewof each model or should we concentrateall of this in the production of one modeluntil such time as materials are againavailable for civilian use in sufficientquantities to build all three models?

Why Scott Phantom and Philhar-monic Should Be Ordered NowFortunately, the decision we have to

make has not been as hard as it mighthave been. After reserving an adequatesupply of parts to insure service on allprevious Scott models for the next tenyears, we still have in stock enoughmaterial to build approximately 200Phantom receivers, and about 80 Phil-

harmonics. But when these are builtno more orders for these instruments canbe taken until an adequate supply ofaluminum, zinc, nickel, and copper i-available. vVhen this will be is impossib'for anyone to say. However, one thing-is certain, and that is that anyone whosecures one of these instruments whilethey are still available' is an extremelylucky individual for it may be a longtime before the opportunity comes again.

Production Facilities to Be Devotedto Building Scott Laureate

ExclusivelyOnce the material and parts on hand

for the Phantom and Philharmonic havebeen built into receivers all of our facili-ties will be devoted to the building ofthe new Scott Laureate, one of the finestreceivers that has ever come out of ourLaboratory. But even the number ofthese that can be built will be limitedby two factors: (1) the amount of ma-terial we can secure and (2) nationaldefense orders which must have prefer-ence.

At this time we have the materials andparts in our Laboratory to build ap-proximately 100 Scott Laureates andhave scheduled material orders duringthe next 90 days for another 200 re-ceivers. Whether all of this material wi~be delivered to us on schedule we donot know. It is possible some of it willbe delivered over a longer period inwhich case orders taken after materialon hand is built up will require a corre-spondingly longer time to build anddeliver.

We sincerely hope that it will not benecessary to direct "all of our facilitiesto national defense but owing to ourspecial facilities and highly skilled tech-nicians this is entirely possible.
