In 1864 Hiram Wild, a young Sheffield knife grinder, savedthe life of a local landowner’s son by rescuing him from theSheffield flood. His bravery was rewarded with a gift of£200 to enable Hiram to set up his own business in theParish of Hallam.

Today, with over 130 years experience and technicalinnovation, Hiram Wild Ltd has become Britain’s largestproducer of Sheffield made knife blades as well as Sheffieldsilver plated and stainless steel cutlery.

Sheffield is the home of stainless steel since Harry Brearley,a metallurgist at Thomas Firth & Sons in Sheffielddeveloped a steel that did not rust.This new invention wasdescribed as stainless steel.The method of mixingchromium with steel came about through experiments byBrearley whilst producing gun barrels that would notcorrode.

Stainless steel was first used in the manufacture of Sheffieldcutlery in the early 1920’s and became the first cutlery inthe world to be stainless.To this day Hiram Wildmanufactures cutlery marked Firth Stainless Made inSheffield England.

Monobloc Knives

These one piece knives aremade from the same stainlessbar as blades.They are forged inone piece under powerful drophammers with a blow force of2,200 tonnes, in just two hits -preform and coin.Theremainder of the processesfollow the blade progression.

SHEFFIELD ENGLANDTHE MANUFACTURINGPROCESSES OF TABLE CUTLERYSpoons and Forks

All spoons and forks are stamped out from rolledsheet whether the material be stainless steel, nickel orsterling silver.The outline blanks are pressed out twoat a time leaving a webbing which is recycled. In thecase of spoons the bowl area is rolled twice toprovide enough material to stamp and form apleasant usable thickness.The handle design is thenstamped in between a top and bottom die. In thecase of spoons, the bowls are stamped and clippedwhereas the forks are pierced once for nickel andsilver and twice for stainless steel to form the prongs.

All items are then edged and the prongs are shapedprior to polishing. Sterling silver cutlery has specialattention during all processes but particularly inpolishing. Stainless steel is simply polished thencleaned and inspected whereas nickel goes on to besilver plated before final finishing and inspection.Thickness of plate is variable dependant on theamount of the time the article is submersed in theplating vat.

Hollow Handle Knives

Knives with separate handles have as many as 60processes in manufacturing the complete article.Theblade is hot forged from bar and the bolster is formedunder a hammer between dies and the blade is rolledto the correct thickness. Both ends are then clippedto form the final shape.The handles like the spoonand fork are stamped from rolled sheet but from athinner gauge.The pattern is pressed into a single halfand after clipping the waste away, they are joinedtogether in a furnace.The blade and the handlecontinue to be processed separately as the blade haseach cutting surface individually ground and thebolster and back ground before rumbling, glazing andpolishing.The handle is pressure tested, edged, glazedand polished and like spoons and forks, if nickel, issilver plated.The handle and blade are joined togetherwith a cement that is inert and enables our knives towithstand any weight or twist tests that comply withall international standards including ISO 9002.

The blades are etched with the appropriate brandname and whetted as part of their final processesbefore cleaning, inspecting and wrapping.
