OngO FOR THE gOLD PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

OnNovember2,participantsfromallsix4-HOntarioregionsdescendedupontheRoyalAgriculturalWinterFairtocompeteinthe2013GoForTheGold(GFTG)ProvincialChampionships,withRegion5takingthehard-competedchampionship.

Afterfivepreliminaryroundsofcompetition,Region4andRegion5wenthead-to-headinthechampionshipgame,withHurontakingthetitlebyanarrow165-155marginoverHalton.Thoughthematchwascloseformostofthegame,Huronincreasedtheirleadinthelaterrounds,andacomebackfromHaltonfellshort.

ThechampionsincludeJeannetteSchramm,JolandeOudshoorn,MelissaHiggins,RebaJeffersonandalternateKateHiggins.TheteamwascoachedbyMaryEllenForanandMaritaOudshoorn.Teammem-bersareallpartoftheWawanoshLifeSkillsClub.

TheteamsincompetitionincludedSudbury(Region1),Carleton(Region2),PrinceEdward(Region3)andOxford(Region6),inadditiontoHalton(Region4),Huron(Region5).

HuroncaptainMelissaHigginssaidhereducationintheagricultureprogramattheUniversityofGuelphhelpedinherpreparations,butshesaidtheteamalsouseda“divideandconquer”methodinpreparing.

“Thismorningwewerefeedingeachotherfunfactsandbecauseofthat,wedidgetaWhoAmIquestionrightonthefirsttry,”shesaidwhenaskedaboutlast-minutestrategies.

GFTGgives4-H’rsachancetolearnmanynewfactsandcompeteamongsttheirpeers.

“It’sareallyexcitingcompetitionandit’sjustreallyfuntogetinvolvedwithsomethingwithother4-Hpeople,”saidSchramm.“Youmeetpeoplefromallacrosstheprovince.”

ThoughtheteamfromHuronCountyamassedanimpressiveaverageofover200pointspergame,thecompetitiondidn’tcomewithoutitschallenges.

“Thepop-upsarenerveracking,andthesnappers,”saidJefferson.“Justcauseit’sattheendofthegameandtrueandfalseishard.It’s50/50,butit’shard.”

“Itfeelsgoodtowin.Sortofmakesyoufeellikearockstarinthe4-Hworld,”saidHiggins.

“I’msuperexcitedbecausemyroommatewasontheRegion6teamandIbeather.SonowIcanhangmywinningribbononmydoorway,”laughedJefferson.

“We’rereallyproudoftheteamandalloftheworkthey’veputinoverthepastfewmonthstoprepareforthe competition,”saidCoachForan.

InorderforteamstoparticipateattheProvincialGFTGcompetition,theymusthavecompetedandwonattheirlocalandregionallevels.Thiscompetitionpresentstheultimatechallengetomembers—testingtheirskillsandunderstandingof4-Hprojectmaterialaswellasgeneralknowledgeof4-H,agriculture,food,nutritionandcurrentevents.

“4-HisallaboutbuildingskillsandlearningtodobydoingandI’veheardstoriesaboutobstaclesandsur-prisesthateveryteamhasfoughtthroughtogethereandhavethisexperiencetoday,”saidDebraBrown,ExecutiveDirector,4-HOntario.

“Ihopeyoutakemanygoodmemoriesofyourexpe-riencetoday,andcongratulationstoeveryoneforallthatyou’velearnedandaccomplished.”
