THE COMPLETE SYSTEM FROM A SINGLE SOURCEODU expertise in perfectly coordinated assembly.

20Dear readers,The electronica international trade fair will be opening in just a few weeks. Just like every second year, electronica will be the place where current customer demands and future market requirements meet creative and inno- vative ideas, concepts and products. We’re hard at work on our final details, too, and are excitedly anticipating this opportunity to present you with our complete range of connectors. We’ll be showing our trade fair visitors customized solutions for a wide range of applications. This year’s highlight is our modular all-rounder, the ODU-MAC connector, for which we’ve introduced a new performance class, the ODU-MAC Blue-Line.

In the run-up to electronica, this issue of STECKVERBINDER invites you to take a virtual tour of ODU’s trade fair stand – it’s an exclusive sneak peek before you even get to Munich! Ready and waiting to answer all your ODU-related questions, we’re truly looking forward to meeting you there.

The electronica trade fair is a highlight of the last quarter of an exciting business year – and a very successful one for ODU. Counter to all the current political, economic and social insecurities in Europe, we’re once again achieving significant growth and are expanding our market position. Our success continues to grow from our project-focused business with customer-specific products – from single contacts to complete assemblies. And our business on the Chinese market is thriving, too. There, our medical technology and measurement and testing market segments have shown double-digit growth rates – again thanks to our ability to custom-design specific solutions to solve specific problems.

We’re right on track all around the world. At electronica, we look forward to setting the new global tone of elec-trical connector technology – for the benefit of our customers.

RECTANGULAR CONNECTORS

ODU is redesigning its ODU-MAC portfolio, combining 30 years of experience and expertise with cutting-edge technologies. Bernhard Säckl oversees the MAC (Modular Attachable Connectors) product family.

Mr. Säckl, what can your customers expect from the three new ODU-MAC product lines? Our ODU-MAC will now be available in three versions: the Silver-Line, White-Line or Blue-Line! Customers seeking perfect au-tomatic docking solutions will find what they’re looking for in the ODU-MAC Sil-ver-Line. The tiniest of sizes, a wide vari-ety of modules and docking frames, and a high number of mating cycles are ideal for use in industrial applications. The ODU-MAC White-Line includes our manual mat-ing connectors. The rugged design, wide variety of housings, and three locking types create a durable, flexible interface. The ODU-MAC Blue-Line is our portfolio’s new performance class, guaranteeing top performance with a minimum of 10,000 mating cycles and easy handling. The modules can be clipped on and unclipped with ease – and no tools are necessary. The contacts, too, can be individually mounted using the clip-on mechanism, and can be easily replaced once assem-

bled. One highlight is ODU’s tried-and-true spindle locking in a new standard plastic housing.

ODU-MAC connectors have been successful on the market for 30 years now. What were the reasons behind this restructuring?Thirty years of ODU-MAC means 30 years of established technology. We can be counted on to turn even complicated cus-tomer requests into successful interfac-es. These three product lines will make it even easier for our customers to find the right solution for their specific applica-tion. We’re providing clarity through these divisions, while at the same clearly posi-tioning ourselves on the market. Existing article numbers won’t change, by the way, but new ones will be added later.

Where do you see further potential for the product family? We’re steadily continuing our portfolio de-velopment – with the ODU-MAC Blue-Line with plastic housing and our ODU spindle locking, for example. The ODU-MAC ZERO was the latest of the White-Line to be in-troduced, featuring a new, compact and non-magnetic housing variety. In the Sil-ver-Line, we’re one of the first manufac-

turers with a complete protective housing design for the termination area. Of course, for all our product lines, we always keep data technology and development in mind. Along with the 30 different data technology modules available for all com-mon transfer rates, we also offer options for optical and coaxial transmission.

What highlights can trade fair visitors look forward to?Obviously, our new performance class, the ODU-MAC Blue-Line, with PCB termination modules, a 20 contacts signal module with integrated contact protection. But in both our Silver-Line and White-Line, we’re introducing a module for the alternate transmission of HF signals with a patent-ed pin-and-socket configuration including rigid-flex PCB terminations. We’ll also have our new M+/P+ docking frame varieties and assemblies on display, rounding out our range of services. So be sure to stop by – we’ll be at stand 143 in hall B2.

Mr. Säckl, thank you for speaking with us!

Mr. Rohr, which trends are currently on the mind of your customers regarding the circular connectors? The circular connectors have been among our bestsellers in the ODU portfolio for decades. We offer a variety of solutions for a wide range of markets and applica-tions. The trends and requirements that concern our customers are accordingly diverse. They range from autoclavable solutions in medical technology to hybrid solutions in industrial environments. More functionality in a compact connector is here in demand. Central issues are also miniaturization, which requires more pow-er in less space, and the fast and reliable transfer of data and signals under the key-word high-speed. Our answers match the challenges of the application. In addition to circular connectors such as our ODU AMC High-Density or our ODU MINI-SNAP, our portfolio features additional solutions, starting with modular rectangular connec-tors (more about this on pages 6–9) to heavy-duty connectors. Another impor-tant trend concerns system solutions – our customers require connectors, cables, and the corresponding assembly from a single source.

As manufacturer how do you respond to these trends? With a high level of vertical integration, in-depth knowledge about connector solu-tions, and cable assembly expertise! We are close to our customers and sense their needs. For example, new versions of our ODU AMC High-Density connector expand the field of application. The ODU MINI-SNAP and ODU MEDI-SNAP are already success-fully used in many different markets. As with our modular ODU-MAC connectors, these product lines are constantly ex-panded based on market requirements. Once the standard reaches its limit, we then fall back on our customized and ap-plication-specific connector solutions. These remain one of our strengths and offer the highest benefit possible for our customers due to individual designs.

Where do you see the circular connector portfolio in the next few years?Trends such as Industry 4.0, miniaturiza-tion, and the transmission of high-speed

Already thinking about tomorrow – today. Just how fast-paced is this eMobility revo-lution?Richard Espertshuber (R.E.): It’s already begun and will increasingly become part of our reality. All future mobility will run on electricity.William Ying (W.Y.): Market figures and data back up this projection. For the Chi-nese market alone, eMobility has shown a 162-percent growth rate in the first half of 2016.

Where do you expect eMobility to be ten years from now?W.Y.: It will have permeated every part of our lives, from eRobots in logistics to eCars, which we’re already familiar with today. In-dependently from the concrete applications of eMobility, we’re expecting significant technological progress, particularly in core technologies such as automotive batteries, control electronics and electric motors.

with our experience, know-how and basic research. Simulation can result in reliable forecast models which can provide us with an early indication of the most expedient direction to take.

Yet the standards for charging plugs, for example, differ from region to region. How exactly is ODU preparing itself for the fu-ture of eMobility?R.E.: Particularly for charging plugs which al-ready contain our ODU products, standards vary widely. But we have a suitable solution for every standard in our entire portfolio, which is extensive. Here, too, we’re reach-ing out to our customers and building up eMobility teams in our three core regions: Europe, North America and Asia. W.Y.: As far as I’m aware, ODU is the first manufacturer of connectors in China to be making use of this kind of structure. It’s how we always manage to guarantee short time-to-market times.

You’ve called yourselves development part-ners and problem solvers. When is ODU the right partner for a potential customer?W.Y.: At ODU, we certainly look far beyond the usual standards. Whether our custom-ers already have an application on hand or whether they’re only in the planning and development phase. R.E.: This makes for solutions which aren’t off the shelf but instead have been de-

No matter which segment we’re working on, our customers always benefit from our ability to be innovative.”

R.E.: For us as manufacturers of connec-tors and contacts, this means we’ll be able to maximize our already high mating cy-cles and excel even more through reliable contacts and efficient solutions.

For ODU, what roles do the land, sea and aviation segments play in eMobility?R.E.: We’re currently expecting the largest amount of growth in the land segment. We have our sights set on solutions for sea and air transport for the medium term. W.Y.: But no matter which segment we’re working on, our customers always benefit from our ability to be innovative. Another advantage: Our contact technologies and connector solutions have been used since the beginning of eMobility. Which explains the wealth of experience we bring to every project. R.E.: Simulation is an important key word in this area. It’s a clever development meth-od we can make use of in combination

veloped to fit specific customer require-ments with optimal results. It also means we create unique selling points together with our customers – making them excel in comparison to their competitors. We cre-ate synergy between the possible and the imaginable!

ODU SPRINGTAC®

ODU LAMTAC®

ODU STAMPTAC®

ODU TURNTAC®

“At first glance, the basic requirements for single contacts appear to all be the same,” explains Jürgen Heigl, responsible for the product range of Single Contacts. “But a complex application profile is the result of the interplay of all the various environmental conditions – and these are different for each of our clients.” Temperature and current-carrying capacity as well as high shock and vibration re-sistance are just a few of the challenges that our contacts must cope with in the application. No matter how challenging or com-plex the task, we transform it into a customized solution. Our four different types of contacts and the specific technology they offer provide outstanding results.

CLOSELY NETWORKED FOR ANY APPLICATIONFrom the ODU SPRINGTAC’s springwire technology to the ODU LAMTAC’s stamped lamella strip to the ODU TURNTAC’S turned con-tact to the stamped and rolled ODU STAMPTAC: We rely on the close link between our development and product departments as well as our proximity to the market. “By staying in close contact with our customers, we’re able to be receptive to their current wishes while planning for their future needs at the same time,” states the ODU Portfolio Manager. “Together with the technology and development department, we develop the foundation for tomorrow’s requests.” Both our application versatility and our contact systems offer po-tential for the future. New or alternative contact principles are be-ing developed faster and faster each day. “The latest production technologies, the processing of high-performance materials, and the use of state-of-the-art analytical and simulation methods: We offer every single one of these options, and from a single source!”

Jürgen Heigl, Portfolio Manager Single Contacts

SINGLE CONTACTS FOR UNLIMITED POSSIBILITIESIt all began with a twig broom. From this visionary idea, our single contact portfolio has steadily grown over the last seven decades. Numerous complex requirements continue to challenge us and are the basis of our current range of solutions.

SINGLE CONTACTS

ODU SPRINGTAC®

Thanks to the independently suspended springwires, this contact has an extremely high number of contact surfaces in the smallest of diameters. Even in the smallest version with a contact diameter of only 0.76 mm, 15 springs are mounted, each of which enters into contact with the pin. The result: total reliability and stable low con-tact resistance even at extremely high numbers of mating cycles (> 100.000).

ODU LAMTAC®

Based on a turned carrier with a fitted stamped lamella strip. It offers more than 10,000 mating cycles and a special benefit thanks to its high contact reliability, high power transmission, and high tem-perature resistance. Special performance materials enable optimal electricity transmission up to 180 degrees Celsius. Another feature is the high degree of automation and the short time to market.

ODU TURNTAC®

This turned, slotted contact has up to four contact surfaces be-tween the pin and socket depending on the version and boasts exceptional ruggedness in the smallest of dimensions. This de-sign compensates for even the most severe contacting angles in the application – up to five degrees. Our expertise in the area of contact technology, our surface technology and testing systems ensures reliable contacts with long-term stability, as guaranteed by our ODU TURNTAC.

ODU STAMPTAC®

The latest addition to our portfolio. The volume-enabled and automatable stamped contact reliably mates with the pin, thanks to the slotted contact finger. A special contact for IEC charging in-terfaces is also included in the product range. A molded-on lip seal guarantees IP 67 sealing. No matter which ODU STAMPTAC version you choose, we’re ready to partner with you in today’s growing market.

OUR FOUR CONTACT TYPES

Old broom turned better. The original resilient pin (right) and its modern counterpart: The ODU SPRINGTAC offers excellent reliability and stability.

CABLE ASSEMBLY AT A GLANCE

From the connector to the termination area all the way to the cable assembly – our customers benefit from our connector solution expertise.

FROM CABLE TO OVERMOLDING“In recent years, the trend has clearly been towards complete sys-tems,” explains Jürgen Reimann, Head of Cable Assembly. “From connectors, cables, and cable overmolding to waterproof potting, our customers receive the entire system solution from us.” With significant benefits. That the number of suppliers is reduced for customers is simply one of the positive points. At the same time, all necessary technologies are available to us as the manufacturer. Our know-how and experience associated with the entire connec-tion technology makes us equally effective and innovative.

NETWORKING FOR OPTIMAL RESULTSA more challenging path lies between an idea and a product, and we gladly take this path for you. Each cable assembly begins in the development phase. Our own electromechanical laboratory provides in-depth test results and opportunities for simulations. In the subsequent manufacturing phase, we produce according to your requirements and industry standards and bundle all further steps, from providing the materials to delivery. “Especially in the area of cable assembly, the smooth interplay between all depart-ments is what makes our solutions so impressive.” But not only communication guarantees best quality but also state-of-the-art

production, processes, and assembly facilities. “We’re continuous-ly expanding our growing cable assembly division,” states Jürgen Reimann. “We’ve recently invested in data verification with cabling and network testers, as well as in equipment for silicone overmold-ing. We’re now one of the few system suppliers who will be offering this as of 2017.”

VARIETY OF TECHNOLOGIESAt the electronica trade fair, we’ll be demonstrating this data tester to those visiting our stand. To do so, we connect an ODU-MAC with high-speed modules and test the cable assembly of the rectangular connector on-site and in real time. The design and aesthetics, as well as the electrical and thermal properties of silicone overmolding open up new markets. Jürgen Reimann thinks further ahead to the future: “When it comes to the keyword Industry 4.0, we’ll be paying close attention to the topic of cable assembly. Testing technology, potting, and overmolding, as well as process audits will be our topics tomorrow.” Today, we deliver innovative and flexible cable assemblies as well as system solutions with short delivery times for perfect results.

RELIABILITY AROUND THE CLOCK

PERFECTLY EQUIPPED FOR HEAVY-DUTY APPLICATIONSHow can safe power transmission, for example, in Shanghai’s port cranes be ensured? Or a reliable connection for excavator grippers be established? Our heavy-duty connectors can do all this and much more. Whether rain, wind, water, snow, or frost – these connec-tors easily withstand all environmental influences. The solid housings are designed for the most rugged conditions. The bayonet locking is not only easy to handle, but also closes reliably even if the connector is exposed to strong vibrations. The proven ODU SPRINGTAC contacts with springwire technology are used as contact elements for the transmission of signals up to and including high current. These ensure a safe and trouble-free connection and guarantee a high number of mating cycles. With a selection of more than 100 standard inserts, your application in a harsh environment is our next challenge.

HEAVY-DUTY CONNECTORS FOR DIFFICULT TASKSNo easy task when connectors need to function in extreme environmental conditions.

Printed circuit boards constitute the heart of almost all electrical equipment – particularly in the area of automation. Demanding operations functioning 24/7 must be fail-free. Reliable contact technology is of vital importance for the secure transfer and trans-mission of power, signals, and data. With our versatile product pro-gram, you can choose maximum flexibility in designing your appli-cations and optimal capacity in use: ODU PCB connectors provide impressive results worldwide in industrial applications thanks to their excellent quality in signal transmission and integrity.

OTHER PRODUCTS FROM THIS SEGMENTThe ODU FLAKAFIX, a 2.54 mm board-to-wire connector, is a relia-ble and cost-effective solution for PCB connections. It stands out thanks to its high contact security, dependable long-term perfor-mance, low contact resistance and gas-tight contact points.

The ODU MINI-FLAKAFIX series is the right choice for connecting printed circuit boards over greater distances at arbitrary or change-able angles. The contacting of the board and the cable is available in a pluggable or a soldered version.

The ODU CARD connectors are suitable as medium and high-pole, plug-in contact elements. The practical geometric layout allow for high packing density on printed circuit boards. ODU CARD connec-tors are available as square socket / plug combinations.

By combining tiny dimensions and maximum power, ODU MINI-CARD creates optimal connections between boards – both for THT sol-dering as well as for surface mounting (SMT soldering). The two guide pins molded on the insulating body facilitate centering dur-ing assembly and absorb horizontal mechanical forces of printed circuit boards.

CHALLENGE PROVIDED,SOLUTION FOUND

When you give us your requirements regarding design, function, cost and exclusivity, we’ll come up with the interface you need. Our goal for each and every order is your application and your success. We can make this happen by relying on our more than 70 years of experience in developing and manufacturing connectors, thinking outside the box and delivering outstanding results. The following two examples demon-strate how versatile and customized our solutions for you can be.

Special ODU solutions in medical technology (left): a customer-specific design solution based on the ODU-MAC, created for a MRI system.

Designed for rough environments: our system solution for Mettler Toledo’s truck weighbridge.

WEIGHTY DEVELOPMENTWhen trucks need to be weighed, we ensure the accurate transfer of data. Our system solution made up of a connector and cable is used in a stationary weighbridge of our customer Mettler Toledo. It weighs the trucks before and after loading − and has a load capacity of up to 90 tons. Two connectors per load cell ensure the proper transfer of data. The harsh environmental conditions place high demands on the glass-potted connectors and cables: moisture resistance for up to 20 years and a small size. The rugged cables must be able to survive rodent attacks and lightning strikes without damage and provide a completely tight connection to the terminal. This solution has provided flawless results for years now.

INTERFACE WITH A TWISTA customized industrial control system − that was the development challenge our customer Bernecker + Rainer Industrie-Elektronik set before us. Our solution wasn’t a connector in the usual sense. Instead, we developed plug-in modules. Since the specifications called for an extremely compact design, the challenge already be-gan with the production of suitable stamped and injection-molded parts. The input and output unit of the control system still contains three ODU products. In addition to the 12-pole terminal block, we also produced the through connector, a bus connection between the units, and a bus module. The sophisticated contact geometry of this system solution enables us to meet even the broadest of re-quirements.

FOR TACTICAL, RELIABLE COMMUNICATIONPoor quality reception, listening fatigue and constantly having to wear a headset in or around one’s ear – these are common issues associat-ed with military communication systems. In order to address this chal-lenge and together with a special US Navy unit, our customer Atlantic Signal developed an advanced headset system: The DOMINATOR II. Com-bining a watertight, noise-absorbing microphone with bone conductors and electronic headphones, the system enables users, for the very first time, to be able to easily remove the headphones from their ears while the radio reception continues uninterrupted. This is made possible by bone conductors which enable the radio communication to be transmit-ted directly into the inner ear via the bones of the skull. Our ODU AMC ensures the reliable transmission of the signals. The circular connec-tor connects the headset with the push-to-talk housing. ODU AMC is a lightweight connector solution with a non-reflective surface, protection class IP 68 water tightness, durability of up to 5,000 mating cycles and break-away function. This last feature allows for the easy disconnec-tion of the connector with one pull on the cable. Ease of handling and a reliable connection – to fully meet the requirements of military and security technology.

ODU USA INVESTING IN THE FUTUREThink globally, act regionally – that’s the solid foundation of the ODU Group. We’re continuing to strengthen our three regions: Europe, America, and Asia. As we look to the future, we’re not only expanding our global market positions. We’re also investing in our company headquarters in Mühldorf: For example, this year we constructed a new building, thereby creating space for growth, both in terms of technology and personnel. Construction started in March and we moved into the new building in September. Offices for the Development, Technical and Quality Management departments are on the upper floors, while new production areas for the turning shop are located on the ground floor. More recently, we installed a new system for silicone overmolding. It’s a method used to assemble cables, which will expand our technology portfolio in the future. “This new building of ours gives us much more than just extra space,” states Dr. Joachim Belz, Managing Director ODU. “The move can actually be seen as a restruc-turing, in that the technology-based departments are now together in one building and close to production. Our cus-tomer-oriented areas – Sales, Marketing and Product Man-agement – will now be spatially closer together in the old building complex.“ Both new arrangements foster and short-

From process engineers to industrial clerks and me-chanical engineers. We offer excellent future pros-pects to young people with our eight different appren-ticeship programs, three dual degree programs, and internal advanced training courses. We place great emphasis on training our junior employees in-house. We share solid knowledge, comprehensive know-how, and years of experience. At the same time, we attach importance to creativity. Art and music lessons as well as original projects are therefore part of our training. Innovations are the result: For example, a re-cent project of our trainees was the development and construction of a pretzel cutting machine, which visi-tors of our “Training Day” were able to admire.

On June 11, we welcomed approximately 400 students and parents to our company premises in Mühldorf. At various apprenticeship stations, our trainers and trainees showed our visitors the tasks and learning contents, and provided them with a glimpse of the trainees’ everyday work. Our employees were introduced to the visitors during company tours. “Our Training Day was a great suc-cess again this year,” states Anna Edmaier, training manager at ODU. “We’re able to make top-quality con-nections and sophisticated technology easy to un-derstand with our ‘See, touch, participate’ motto.”

OUR SPECIALISTS OF TOMORROW

OF PRETZELS AND CONNECTORS

We challenge, we encourage, we train. Currently, 110 young people are completing an apprenticeship or dual course of study with us – and new ones join the company each year. Our “Training Day” offers young talents a first glimpse into the multi-faceted world of connectors.

WORK LIFE

THREE VOICES...

LISA SANDNERSurface coating engineer, Training year 2

I’m intrigued by technical and chemical processes, and that’s why I decided to

train to be a surface coating engineer. Wom-en in technical professions are a matter of course at ODU. Almost half the employees at ODU are women, and that’s nearly twice as many as you’ll typically find in the in-dustry. I also enjoy the pleasant working conditions and positive mood here.”

MAXIMILIAN WIESMÜLLERCutting machine operator, Training year 3

ODU trains us in a very focused and student-specific way. An older,

experienced employee is always by the trainee’s side to create a good balance between youth and experience. I learn something new every day from my col-leagues and I’m gradually getting ready to face the future challenges of the work-ing world.”

THERESA DRJUPINMechanical engineering student, Semester 3

After my toolmaker apprenticeship at ODU, I decided to do a dual study

course. The combination of practice and theory, study and everyday work, is still something I believe in to this day. ODU offers a variety of in-house further train-ing opportunities and great prospects: All the expertise and key technologies that I need to acquire as part of my studies – they’re all right here at ODU. And the cooperation with the subsidiaries and international customers opens up new horizons.”

We attracted a great deal of interest – and not just because of the “pretzel cutting machine” our trainees had created. We also had a variety of delightful treats to share about our company.

“WELCOME TO PLANET e”For more than 70 years now, ODU has been producing high-quality, innovative

electrical connectors. So much has happened since then! And that includes our trade fair stands. Let’s look at our trendsetting solutions from yesterday and today.

NEWS

Over the past 50 years, the electronica trade fair has devel-oped into a premier meeting place for the electronics indus-try. The first electronica in 1964 invited exhibitors to Munich: Of course, ODU was there with its own stand. And we brought along our high-quality connector solutions that implement our customers’ requirements right down to the smallest de-tails. For example, in 1982 we presented a new 50-pin D-sub connector that turned into a great success down the road. Only later did the more economical 25-pin D-sub become more prevalent on the market.
