In B lack& White DFYIT DFYIT this year is under the leadership of Allie Rowland, Kyler Comley and Debi Schmidt. The year kicked off with students donating to a cancer patient in our school. We donated to the Friendship Meals and bought all the dinners for the elderly for at Jefferson Plaza Silver Threads. DFYIT also delivered meals to families in Sterling with a turkey and box of Thanksgiving supplies to make a dinner. We have just finished up collecting for the Goodfellows and have over 17 boxes of supplies to deliver along with a check for $200.00. Also on our plate, is care packages to be delivered to the police officers in Sterling. We just want to let them know how much we appreciate them.DFYIT community hours have changed this year. High school students must have 15 hours to attend the drug free festival and junior high will need 10 hours, it is still 20 hours to letter. Lindsey Gilmore is working on a program for our website and students will just go on line to turn in their hours and sign their commitment sheet. Hopefully we will have this up and going by February. Two Sterling USD teachers and two parents of Sterling students will be performing in a musical at the Flag Theatre in Hutchinson on January 12-15. The musical, "Radio Gals," is a production of the Sterling Community Theatre Troupe.  Sterling School District librarian, Amy Brownlee, band director, Larry Brownlee, and parents Piper Harding and Seth Svaty, will all be participating in the production.

The show is a day in the life of Hazel Hunt and her friends who run a daily radio show from her home in 1920s Arkansas. The musical features cleaver and often hilarious music.  A unique feature to this show is that the cast

also play all of the instruments for the production.  Five of the seven cast members play the piano, three play flute, five play percussion, three play string bass, and all seven play ukulele.  Other instruments being performed during the musical include: guitar, violin, accordion, trombone, trumpet, tuba, clarinet, and a variety of other percussion and noise-making instruments.

St udent s par t icipat e in dent al screenings

The st at e of Kansas requires year ly dent al screenings. USD 376 dent al screenings were held in Oct ober and Novem ber . Prair ie St ar Healt h Cent er preform ed t he screenings. Screenings do not t ake t he place of an exam inat ion in a dent ist ?s of f ice. These screenings only point out easily found defect s. Let t ers were m ailed hom e if concerns were not ed. Som e Sr / Jr h igh school st udent s t hat had signed parent al consent s received prevent at ive care such as cleanings, sealant s and f luor ide t reat m ent s.

Dent al Cleanings for St er l ing Grade School

Our school has been select ed t o par t icipat e in t he Kansas School Sealant s Program . Dent al professionals w il l be of fer ing t he follow ing services in t he school: sealant s, f luor ide, and dent al cleanings.

Prair ie St ar Healt h Cent er w il l be at St er l ing Grade School on January 17 of fer ing cleanings, f luor ide t reat m ent s and sealant s. It is not t oo lat e t o sign your child up. If you would l ike your child t o par t icipat e you need t o f i l l out a consent form and a m edical h ist ory form . These form s are available in t he of f ice. This is a great oppor t unit y t o get prevent at ive services.

St at ist ics

In t he Unit ed St at ed 1 in 5 children age 2-19 have unt reat ed decay. Children w it h dent al disease m iss m ore school. Painful t eet h can cause problem s w it h at t ent ion. This can have an ef fect on overall school per form ance.

Have You Been Naught y or Nice t o Your Teet h?

Brush t eet h at least t w ice a day w it h a f luor ide t oot hpast e. Keep in m ind t hat children under seven m ay need assist ance. They m ay not be able t o m ake all t he hand m ovem ent s necessary t o clean all sur faces of t heir t eet h.

Floss once a day

Avoid f requent snack ing. Try t o choose healt hy snacks. Diet s high in sugar and carbohydrat es m ay increase t he r isk of t oot h decay. Lim it sugary sodas, ju ices and spor t s dr inks. Fin ish sugary dr inks and snacks in one set t ing. Sipping or chew ing all day can great ly increase t he chance of t oot h decay.
