Yizkor Memorial ServiceCalling to mind the memory of relatives or friends who have departedand giving tzedakah in their memory is a long standing custom. It ismentioned in the medieval work Midrash Tanhuma as a Yom Kippurcustom, though the Yizkor prayers themselves are somewhat later inorigin. Recitation of Yizkor on the Pilgrimage Festivals began inEuropean communities after the bloody destruction associated with theCrusades.

Because it was superstitiously believed that being present for Yizkorwhen one’s parents were living could hasten their death, it used to bethe case that only those required to say Yizkor because of the death ofan immediate relative remained in the synagogue. After the Holocaust, somany were left with no one to say Yizkor for them. Congregants, young and old have been encouraged to remain in the sanctuary andsay Yizkor for those who perished in the Shoah.

The traditional phrase said of the dead - Zikhronam Livracha - thememory for a blessing, reminds us that part of our purpose inremembering is to have our memories influence us to do good. Thisinfluence is made tangible in the custom of giving tzedakah in memoryof loved ones. Endowments in memory of loved ones can continue todo good and bring meaning to the larger community after the death ofthe individuals.

(We read responsively)

There is a time for everything, for all things under the sun:

A time to be born and a time to die,A time to laugh and a time to cry,

A time to dance and a time to mourn,A time to seek and a time to lose,

A time to forget and a time to remember.

This day in sacred convocation we remember those who gave us life.

We remember those who enriched our lives with love and beauty, kindness and compassion, thoughtfulness and understanding.

We renew our bonds to those who have gone the way of all the earth.

As we reflect upon those whose memory moves us this day, we seekconsolation, and the strength and the insight born of faith.

Tender as a father with his children, the Lord is merciful with Hisworshippers.

God knows how we are fashioned, remembers that we are dust.

Our days are as grass; we flourish as a flower in the field.

The wind passes over it and it is gone, and no one can recognize whereit grew.

But the Lord’s compassion for worshippers,God’s righteousness to children’s children, remain, age after age, unchanging.

Three score and ten our hearts may number,Four score years if granted the vigor.

Page 6: IN BLESSED MEMORY · In memory of those we love who walk the earth no longer. May we live unselfishly, in truth and love and peace, so that we will be remembered as a blessing, as

What are mortals, that You should take note of them,That You have made them little less than angels?

The sound of infants attest to Your power,The magnificence of life reflects Your glory.

The heavens display Your splendor. What majesty is Yours throughout the world!

Teach us to use all of our day, O Lord,That we may attain a heart of wisdom.

Grant us of Your love in the morning,That we may joyously sing in all our days.

When I stray from You, O Lord, my life is as death; But when I cleave to You, even in death I have life.

You embrace the souls of the living and the dead. The earth inherits that which perishes.

The dust returns to dust; But the soul, which is God’s, is immortal.

The Lord has compassion for His creatures.

God has planned eternity within our soul,Granting us a share in unending life.

God redeems our life from the grave.

May we all be charitable in deed and in thought,In memory of those we love who walk the earth no longer.

May we live unselfishly, in truth and love and peace, so that we willbe remembered as a blessing, as we this day lovingly remember thosewhose lives endure as a blessing.

Those We RememberEternal God, we have come to sanctify our fleeting lives by linking them withYours, O Life of all Ages.

In You, O Lord, generations past, present, and future are united in one bond oflife.

At this sacred hour, we are keenly aware of those individuals through whomwe have come to know of Your grace and love.

Much of the wisdom, beauty, and affection that have enriched our lives are thegarnered fruits of our communion with others.

Many of those to whom we owe so much are alive and with us today. We praythat we may be able to reward their goodness and their devotion to us throughacts of love and loyalty.

But others have passed forever from our midst, leaving us a heritage of tendermemories which now fill our minds and hearts.

The following may be read aloud or in silence:

Some of us recall beloved parents who watched over us, guided us, sacrificedfor us, and encouraged us.

Some of us lovingly call to mind a wife or a husband with whom we were trulyunited - in our hopes and our pains, in our failures and our achievements, in ourjoys and our sorrows.

Some of us remember brothers and sisters, who grew up with us, sharing in theplay of childhood, in the youthful adventure of discovering life’s possibilities, bound to us by family traditions and by years of shared experience.

Some of us call to mind children, entrusted to us all too briefly, taken from usbefore they reached their years of fulfillment, to whom we gave our loving careand from whom we received a trust which enriched our lives.

Many of us recall beloved relatives and dear friends who enhanced our lives, andwhose visible presence can no longer return to cheer, encourage, and supportus.

4

Page 8: IN BLESSED MEMORY · In memory of those we love who walk the earth no longer. May we live unselfishly, in truth and love and peace, so that we will be remembered as a blessing, as

Those whom we recall today are gone from us; yet we are grateful forthe blessings which they brought into our lives.

We are sustained and comforted by the thought that the goodness whichour departed brought into our lives remains an enduring blessing, whichdeath cannot take from us.

We can show our devotion to our departed by demonstrating our devotionto noble ideals and values.

O God of Love, make us worthy of the love which we have received.Teach us to love You with all our heart, with all our soul, and with allour might, and to spread the light of Your Divine Love on all whoselives touch ours.

Give us strength to live honorably and, when our time comes, to dieserenely, confident that You will not permit our lives to be wasted, butwill bring all our worthy strivings to fulfillment.

Amen.

Mordecai M. Kaplan, E. Kohn, & I. Eisenstein (adopted)

KAVANAH. Whenever we take time to think about our origins, or goback to the home where we spent our childhood, we find that thingshave changed. The years have taken their toll. Death has taken awaymany of the people who filled our early years. Our friendships havechanged, our family relationship have changed. And yet - if only in ourdeepest memories, home continues to be with us. We carry our ancestorsand our homes through all the years of our lives. We cannot go homeagain, but if we can remember, we are never really away from home.

Lord, what are we humans, that You have regard for us,Mere mortals, that You take account of us?

We are like a breath,Our days are like a fleeting shadow.

Teach us to number our days,That we may attain a heart of wisdom.

The Lord redeems the life of His servants; And those who trust in Him shall not feel forsaken.

Biblical verses

Eternal God, in whose eyes a thousand years are but as yesterday, inwhose hands are the souls of the living and the dead, in Your sight everysoul is precious.

O Lord, from whom we come and to whom we return, strengthen us aswe now remember our loved ones who have been reunited with You. Bewith us as we consecrate this hour to the memory of our departed.

A Yizkor Meditation in Memory of a Parent who was Hurtful:

Dear God,

You know my heart. Indeed You know me better than I knowmyself, so I turn to You before I rise for Kaddish.

My emotions swirl as I say this prayer. The parent I remember wasnot kind to me. His/Her death left me with a legacy of unhealedwounds, of anger and of dismay that a parent could hurt a child as Iwas hurt.

I do not want to pretend to love, or to have grief that I do not feel, but I do want to do what is right as a Jew and as a child.

Help me, O God, to subdue my bitter emotions that do me no good, and to find that place in myself where happier memories may liehidden, and where grief for all that could have been, all that shouldhave been, may be calmed by forgiveness, or at least soothed by thepassage of time.

I pray that You, who raise up slaves to freedom, will liberate mefrom the oppression of hurt and anger, and that You will lead mefrom this desert to Your holy place.

-Robert Saks (From Mahzor Lev Shalem)

We Remember Them

At the rising of the sun and at its going down, we remember them. At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, we remember them.

At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring, we remember them.

At the shining of the sun and in the warmth of summer, we remember them.

At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn, we remember them.

As long as we live, they too will live; for they are now a part of us, aswe remember them.

When we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them.

When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them.

When we have joy we crave to share, we remember them.

When we have decisions that are difficult to make, we remember them.

When we have achievements that are based on theirs, we remember them.

As long as we live, they too will live: for they are now a part of us, aswe remember them.
