You and your students will embrace the glories of the night sky right in your classroom.

Grade 6 Astronomy Workshop:

This workshop will take the student from the Earth to the edge of the observable universe.

It is designed to address the astronomy requirements within the grade 6 science curriculum.

Topics we explore:

Solar Eclipses Lunar Eclipses

Meteors Comets

The Solar System Nebulae

Space Exploration Galaxies

Exo Planets Aurora

Black holes Stellar Evolution

Possible life elsewhere in the universe

Benefits of our astronomy program

All of the presentations are completely open to questions making each

presentation unique and very dynamic

The students learn within an environment in which they are comfortable,

their own school

The program delivers the latest news and events in the field of astronomy

and space exploration to the classroom

The presentation is best delivered to groups of two to three classes at a

time

You can maximize the learning experience at a low cost to the students with

Tips:

This presentation is most effective at the beginning and middle of the as-

tronomy unit.

Have the students think of and write down a few questions a day or two

before the presentation.

Program length ~90 minutes, Maximum 70 students/workshop

The optional evening star party gives students, family members and teachers a

unique opportunity to view the wonders of the night skies through our telescopes

with their own eyes.

The evening begins with an indoor presentation titled “The Sky

Tonight”. Using a powerful planetarium program the audience is

shown how to locate and identify major constellations and plan-

ets. I will also demonstrate interesting future astronomical events.

If it’s clear we will proceed outside for great views of the planets,

moon and other bright astronomical objects. The evening will

conclude with a tour of the constellations using a powerful laser

pointer .

See the moons and cloud bands of Jupiter

Large Computerize Telescopes

See Saturn’s magnificent

rings and moons. Saturn really

is a show stopper. Typical com-

ments “That can’t be real...it’s a

sticker inside the tele-

scope...that’s amazing!”

Great views of the moon. The

students will see hundreds of cra-

ters, projection rays and mountain

ranges. The best time to view the

moon through the telescope is near

the first quarter phase.

Tips:

Check out the website under “Programs/Star Parties” for a

monthly planet viewing guide and helpful tips to run a suc-

cessful star party

All Grade six students MUST be accompanied by an adult

(other family members are also welcome and encouraged to

attend)

Evening star parties will not be offered to schools outside of

Peel Region after March break due to late sunset times

The best moon to view through the telescope is from crescent to waxing gibbous. The

shadows in the craters revel amazing surface detail .

The program is designed to enhance the flight unit and give the students a real sense of the

mechanics and thrills of flying an airplane.

The Program:

I begin with a power point presentation on the history of flight from the invention of the kite

by the Chinese 3000 years ago to today's largest passenger aircraft the Airbus A380.

The students will then participate in a mini ground school course where they will learn :

* The fundamentals of flight

* Aircraft components and function

* Air Law

* Weather and air mass properties

Students will complete a mini

Ground School course

The Ground School booklet

makes an excellent resource

the students can use for future

reference

Students apply what they have learned by using a flight

simulator and attempt to land a airplane at the Toronto

Island Airport (Billy Bishop Airport)

Tips:

This program works best at the beginning to middle of the flight unit

Program length ~90 minutes, Maximum 40 students/workshop

.
