Dear friend,

In fall 2015, a small group of us got together over a cup of coffee and some proper Finnish cinnamon buns. As product of that casual exchange of thoughts, the idea of SHIFT was born. A festival that would be a mix of everything: art, music, installations and groundbreaking tech, a place where people from all walks of life would come together for meaningful conversations about our future.

The name SHIFT was chosen because it resembled a change of mindset. A deviation from the current path towards something we wanted every individual and organisation to strive for - to focus on the stuff that matters: the place of human beings, the value of preserving our planet and the ethics of technological development.

This Insider’s Guide gives you an overview of SHIFT 2018. A 48-hour bat shi(f)t crazy meetup of entrepreneurs, technology enthusiasts, scientist and industry players. Our venue, the unique and rustic former prison of Kakolan Lääni features 2 stages full of fascinating program, amazing partners and demo booths, several side events, parties, eats and roundtable sessions.

ARRIVING AND GETTING THEREWe warmly recommend arriving by foot, bike or with our free SHIFT shuttle bus. Note that there is no parking space available close to the venue. The festival venue is located 1,7 kilometers from the city center.

SHIFT SHUTTLE BUSThere is a free SHIFT shuttle bus going between city center and the festival venue. You don’t need a ticket for the shuttle bus. The bus leaves approximately every 20 minutes from stop T2 at Aurakatu 6 and drops you off at Sofiankatu.

Shuttle bus hours:Tuesday May 22, 10.30 am - 7pmWednesday May 23, 9.30am- 8pm.

Please note that there will be an extra shuttle bus driving from Bore hostel to the venue on Wednesday morning between 9.30am-10am.

TAXISTaxis are reliable and easy to get during day time. Call number +358 210041 or use Valopilkku mobile app to reserv a taxi. A taxi rank is in front of Sofiankatu 10 within a short walking distance to the venue.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTWe highly recommend using public transport as much as possible. You can use bus nr 1 and 12 to get to the venue. The buses leave from the city centre, just be sure to hop off at the “Portsa” stop (bus 12) or at the “Kakola” stop (bus 1). You can use the line 1 also if you are going to Bore hostel (hop off at stop “Forum Marinum”.).

REGISTRATIONYou can claim your festival wristband (yep, no badges this year) at the two registration points in front of the festival area. We will also have our crew of runners scanning your festival passes outside the area to ensure a smooth registration.

For the registration you need your e-ticket sent to you by email. We kindly ask you to have everything ready before entering the queue. If you can’t find your ticket, please contact tickets@theshift.fi.

Note that every attendee will go through a mandatory security check before entering the festival venue. All dangerous and prohibited items will be removed.

INFO DESKYou can find our crew members at the Info Desks located at the heart of the venue (see location from the map).

Our crew is also shuffling around the venue all time helping you in any possible way. You will know them from their black and pink shirts.

WIFIThere are two free wifi spots (see location for the map) that everyone can use. We want to emphasize that the venue is built in 1890s and time to time there can be issues with phone and wifi connectivity.

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU

ACCESSIBILITYThe whole festival venue is not accessible by wheelchair, and the terrain is not the easiest one. We will provide you with a host to make sure you can enjoy the full festival.

Wheelchair accessible toilets are located next to Main stage (see location from the map). You can ask more about accessibility at info@theshift.fi.

LEAVE YOUR HIGHS HEELS AND FANCY CLOTHES HOMEThis is not a fashion statement. We love you to look funky and cool. However, the festival venue is rough, sandy and dusty. Please dress accordingly. High heels are forbidden. Yes, forbidden. You will thank us later.

FIRST AID & SECURITYThere is first aid service at the venue in case of accidents (see location from the map). In case of an emergency, call the emergency number 112.

If you notice anything dangerous or suspicious at the event, do not hesitate to contact the staff.

CLOAKROOM & LOST AND FOUNDA cloakroom is located inside the prison close to the main entrance (see location from the map). The cloakroom is free of charge. Please note that cloakrooms cannot receive large items. You can leave a cabin size luggage in the cloakroom but unfortunately there is no storage for big luggage. The cloakroom is open during festival hours.

SHIFT brings forth visionaries of artificial intelligence, algorithmic decision making, emotional AI, space tech, cybersecurity, neurotech and laws of growth, for an open dialogue around ethics, impact and future development.SHIFT features 8 Redefining Normal tracks and 2 Industry tracks, in addition to several side events, networking sessions as well as art, music and after parties.

Program tracks consist of world-class keynote speeches, intriguing demos of groundbreaking technologies, intimate round table discussions with the keynote speakers, as well as hands-on learning at workshops.

At SHIFT meeting new people is extremely easy. Open-minded people are everywhere, ready to wonder an art show together or just mingle over an ice cold mocca latte.

This year SHIFT takes off with a BOOM covering 10 DJ’s, 6 artists, 7 installations, a movie theater and a possibility to take microchip tattoos. Here are few highlights.The Art & Entertainment program has been designed to create a unique and holistic festival experience with experimental decorations, thought-provoking art installations, surprising performances, music and other entertainment.

HIGHLIGHTSBiocommunication – Lilli HaapalaBiocommunication is an artwork based on measurement of electrical conductivity from the body which is converted into different sounds.

DJ, Teemu Keisteri – WINDOWS95MANWindows95man is a breeze of this day, but he draws inspiration from the 90’s eurodance and techno hits. His personal appearance and confusing musical selection will take you to sweet 90’s flashbacks! The show is on both days at Back Yard.

Cybernet - VR arcade room At the official SHIFT After Party the Movie Theater will be turn into a VR arcade for the night. Take your friends with you and enjoy the experience together!

A roster of 13 handpicked high profile restaurants, cafes and bars will be serving us a culinary explosion. Every edible trend will be presented: Vegan choices as well as the use of local, organic and sustainably produced ingredients.

FOOD AND DRINKS

Hidden bars as well as old cars will serve cold craft beer, handmade cider and glasses of bubbly. Coffee and tea are served for no charge throughout the day in several spots. Water stations can be found at Front yard. We encourage you to bring your own reusable bottle with you!

We want our festival to have as little impact on the environment as possible. For us, sustainability is not just a trend to join in – it’s a must.

SUSTAINABILITY

In 2017 SHIFT was awarded the EcoCompass Certificate for exemplary actions towards sustainable event organization. We intend keep on doing the right thing.

This year, besides the obvious choices such as taking the SHIFT shuttle bus, using recyclable materials and having a veggie meal for lunch, we strive to minimize our plastic and paper waste. As a result there will be no attendee badges wrapped in plastic, but wristbands instead. Roll-ups and flyers are forbidden and we only give out a limited amount of hand programs. We encourage all our attendees to follow the lead and use digital alternatives instead of (boring and disgusting) one time paper things.

SHIFT would not be the same without all the parties, secret saunas, meetups and funky beats and tasty eats held during the week.

SHIFT organises three official parties: the Opening Party, the First Day After Party and the Official After Party. In between, there are breakfast events, afterworks and river ferry rides. Hop on board!

Kick start to your festival experience with SHIFT Opening party at Storage. The event is free and open for everyone and SHIFT keynote speaker Geoffrey West makes an appearance on stage on 19.00 so be sure to arrive on time at 18.30 when doors open.

Å (pronounced oh, like door) is a Swedish word for river, which is where this event will take place. A dozen exciting, international startups will be pitching their ideas while sailing back and forth the Aura river.

First day of SHIFT is set and the sun goes down.

We will continue the night at Tårget and Tiirikkala, in the heart of old Turku. Stories will be shared, jazz and funky music played, get togethers and meetups held and cold drinks enjoyed. Not to mention the secret sauna or the very, very hush hush after after party at some part of the town.

The event is open for the public. SHIFT pass is not required.

10pm - 02am Epic Boat PartyMS Bore, Linnankatu 72

As the finale of the first day of SHIFT 2018, Boost will organize an after party of epic proportions at MS Bore.

Drinks will start flowing at 10pm and the party will go on till 2am. All the cool kidz will be there and so should you.

The event is free of charge, but registration is required.

Just before the After party, we gather for a casual mingle at restaurant Kakolanruusu and Nooa, the two best terraces in town. Grab a water or a beer, chill and hang out.

CHECKLIST FOR SHIFTDURING THE EVENT

• Do what SHIFT is about: undertake new learning, meet new people and discover new perspectives about the world around you.

• Arrive early to the venue to ensure you’ll see and hear everything you want to.

• Arrive early to all program parts. All keynotes, roundtables and workshops are on a first-come first-serve basis, so do make sure to be on time to secure your spot. We highly recommend being there about half an hour early.

• Be social and continue the discussion. Follow @theshiftfi and use the official #theshiftfi to tell the world what you’ve learned and experienced.

• Remember to eat & stay hydrated. There are plenty of delicious dishes served at our venue. There’s also a refill stations for water bottles at Front yard (see map for location).

• SHIFT is a unique and holistic festival experience. Enjoy the art installations, performances, music and other entertainment.

• In case of emergency, please go to our nearest first-aid station or speak to the staff.

BEFORE THE EVENT

• Kakolan Lääni, the amazing venue, is big enough to get lost so make sure you check out the map before you arrive (page 6).
