President’s Report The sun was shining on Royal Melbourne on Monday and both courses were in magnifi-cent condition. There are so many people to thank for making the day such a suc-cess. The Golf Day Commit-tee combining Beaumaris Rotary and Black Rock Sports Auxiliary, for taking on the mammoth task of planning the event. The many members and partners from both Clubs who volunteered for this very important fund raising event. The Royal Melbourne Golf Club for generously offering us the use of both courses and the function staff for the delicious lunch. Thanks to our sponsors Brighton Jaguar, PKF, Bayside City Council, The House of Golf and Lowe Design. The 400 players who came to participate in the Bayside Charity Golf Day, congratulations to the winners. We were delighted that Leslie Falloon was able to join us to present the Leslie Falloon Perpetual Trophy to the winner. The Golf Com-mittee are already making plans for next year’s event on 27th May 2019. Last Thursday night Hanna and Milly from Total Balance spoke to us about the importance of exercise as medicine for osteoporotic pre-vention ad management. Thanks to Megan’s for your bringing the yoga mats as prizes, we hope they are being put to good use. Our much anticipated Keith Bulfin Night on 11th October at VGC is now fully booked. Over 100 people will be attending including mem-bers and partners from our cluster clubs Cheltenham Hampton and Sandringham. Thanks Bob McArthur for organising the event. October is ‘Economic and Community Development Month’ in the Rotary Calendar, also the Victorian Seniors Festival. We have a busy few weeks ahead in Beaumaris.

This Weeks Speakers: Milly Gunther &
Hanna Geelan
Topic: Exercise Intervention for Osteo-porosis Prevention and Management
Hannah Geelan
B. PHTY
Total Balance Physiotherapist and Pilates Instructor
What is osteoporosis?
Systemic skeletal disorder characterized by low-bone
mass
Affects over a million Australians.
1/3 women, 1/5 men over the age of 50 years
It is a silent disease which means that there are no warn-
ing signs until a fracture occurs.
Results in over 165 000 fractures annually
Diagnosis
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA)
This technique is commonly used to measure the central skeleton, hip or some parts of the peripheral skeleton
such as the arm/wrist bones
Risk Factors
Modifiable: physical activity, body weight, excessive alco-
hol consumption, smoking
Non-modifiable: family history of OP, hormones (menopausal women, slow decline of testosterone in
men), calcium and Vitamin D levels, medical history
Management of osteoporosis
Medical and lifestyle management
Medical Management
Biphosphonates
Denosumab
Oestogen Replacement
Strontium ranelate
Exercise Intervention
We know that there is good evidence of efficacy of exer-cise and physical activity for osteoporosis management
and prevention
(Fuchs et al 2001, Vondracek & Linnebur 2009, Winters &
Snow 2000)
But what exercise is best for bone health?
Resistance
Weight-bear
High intensity
Mobility
Falls / balance
ESSA Statement
Evidence from animal and human trials indicates that bone responds positively to impact activities and high in-
tensity progressive resistance training
Furthermore, the optimisation of muscle strength, balance and mobility minimises the risk of falls (and thereby frac-
ture)
It is important that all exercise programs be accompanied by sufficient calcium and vitamin D and address issues of
comorbidity and safety
(Beck et al, 2017)
Weight-bear training
Evidence is strongest for exercise that is weight-bearing compared to non-weightbearing when it’s in the addition of medical management for osteoporosis (Shanb and
Youssef, 2014).
Examples of weight-bearing activity:
Walking
Playing golf
An aerobics or other gym classes-weights and
body weighted

Clinical pilates with standing-based exercises
Running
Skipping
Jumping
Wall squats
Step ups
Walking up or down stairs
Marching on the spot
Repetitive sit to stands
Resistance Training
Addition of therabands, weights, body weight, spring-loaded eg equipment pilates machines such as trapeze
table, exo chair and reformer
No recipe approaches
As a physiotherapist, in my clinical experience, the safest form of exercise is that prescribed by a qualified practition-
er following an assessment of YOU
There are obviously many people who have osteoporosis, who are not going to be able to run/skip/hop/jump for many reasons eg post surgicals, co-morbidities eg heart
health
Combine all areas of exercise into a program that works
best for your body, health and interest
Case Study
Know Your Bones
A joint initiative of Osteoporosis Australia and the Garvan
Institute of Medical Research
It is an online bone health self-assessment generating a report explaining your risk results and personalised rec-
ommendations.
