Presidents Report Rotary light this week: only the meeting on Thursday; a meeting with Chris Shaw the Chair of the Beaumaris Bendigo Bank and a Foundation Grant seminar on Friday; and the Farmers’ Market on Saturday; this column and administration on Sunday. It wasn’t four week nights out five out, a real bonus! Our meeting on Thursday was excellent as always, our members are some of the best and most interesting speakers we have. Malcolm’s considered and consultative approach, as well as intensive and extensive work is going to mean that we have an excellent year next year as we continue to do good in the world (and enjoy ourselves). I am doing notes for Malcolm from the forum so we don’t miss anything but some of the themes to emerge are : • What balance do we want between local and global projects? Our
budgetary allocations need to fit with our defined balance between local, national and global.
• We are not aiming to have huge financial reserves, as we would rather see the money out working “ Doing Good”
• Local projects should also include national projects , especially so we can fit indigenous projects into our scheme of reference
• Member involvement is very important, projects should include a focus on involvement
• We need to seek a younger demographic and a satellite club may be a mechanism to do this
• The programme will be even lighter and have even more variety • Cooperation with other Clubs is favoured and seen as productive • We have always had “Good Governance”, however we will need to
focus on this even more; it could be a 5th pillar of our strategy. Child safety, Insurance and Liability issues will require even more rigour.
Mike Hede, Malcolm, Ken and I attended the very informative Grants Semi-nar on Friday night, Graham Richardson, who ran the seminar, is an excep-tionally conscientious Chair, his care and dedication means we now have four members qualified for any applications we seek to make to the Foun-dation, both for International and District grants. I will summarise any par-ticular information to send to relevant members. Meeting with Chris Shaw, Chair of the Beaumaris Bendigo Bank showed that there will be many areas in which we can co-operate: Concourse events, community events and marketing. We will be working further with them, I am sure. We discussed that both organisations had a similar goal “growing by doing good in the community “ The Farmers’ Market was another success, lots of the community attended, we did well financially, the day was fine, the BBQ worked, the raffle did well and a substantial donation has been made to Impact the charity making a difference to women and children fleeing violence in the home. I note from Kathy Kaplan’s email of thanks that 96 cents in every dollar donated is directed to fulfilling Impact’s mission. That’s the sort of charity expense to

expenditure ratio we all like to see. See Greg’s photos on page 5. We paid for grass mowing of the site on the Friday, there’s been dis-cussion of a working bee to tidy the grounds of the site; we will see how Heather and Peter go in their negotiations but there might be an opportunity for some hands on work, prior to the next Farmers’ Mar-ket. Any tidy up would contribute to the general good appearance of Beaumaris so we may yet be contributing even more to Civic Pride. Next week we are at Kirkhope Aviation: I’m looking forward to that, see you there, or if not there I will see you the following week at the “Mindless Mayhem” on Wednesday 25th May at the Beaumaris Com-munity Centre, Richard and Rewa have a lot of fun in store for us. I would like to thank everyone in the Club for their contributions. If I thanked everybody who is involved in every event I would name you all, you all deserve to be named, so thank you all.
Yours in Rotary

Rotary Raffle; Impact for Women Inc. The raffle at this month’s Farmers’ Market was in aid of Impact for Women Inc., a charity committed to making a difference to Victorian women and children fleeing extreme violence at home. Intimate partner violence is responsible for more ill-health and prem-ature death in Victorian women under the age of 45 than of any oth-er well-known risk factors, including high blood pressure, obesity and smoking. 59% of the health impact experience by women is anxiety and depression. Victoria Police Family Violence Incident Reports are on the increase and in 2015 exceeded 70,000. The numbers show that 7 in 10 wom-en murdered in Australia are victims of family violence. We are very proud to support the work of Impact, you can find more at

Elephants stroll the Serengeti Plain in
Tanzania. Yaron Schmid was able to
capture this image as the herd passed—
but the endeavor required patience. “I
waited quietly with the car turned off for
hours, hoping they would continue in our
direction, one of the larger bulls marched
head-on toward us and then waited
while the rest of his herd kept a dis-
tance. I lay on the floor of the car,
looking up toward him. This is what I
got.”
