Italian constitution establishes the right to

health both as a single person and in the

interest of the community, in 1948

Neglected or intractable

problems would finally

be remedied through the

rapid advance of

scientific medicine,

Improvements in public

health and medical

practice occurred. The

speed with which new

and better measures for

the prevention and cure

of diseases increased

greatly.

Science led to get a better health system

and the spread of health prevention,

and cure.

Living style and food habits were improving

the average age was arising so, more

elderly people needed assistance and a

progressive investments for health

assistance was required

Since 1953, the

insurance against

disease and work

accidents was

compulsory for all

workers

Thousands children affected by

poliomyelitis paralysis before the 50s,

were vaccinated during the decade, in

a campaign that saved million

children.

For family health care the

system was based on

the “medico condotto”

(the family doctor). A

town doctor for poor

and unemployed people

“Il dispensario”

(town dispensary)

that dispenses

medications and

medical supplies to

poor people or to

the whole

population in case

of vaccination or

heath campaigns.

In 1958 the Ministery of health was set. It

was supported by the Health Committee

(consultive) and the Higher Institute for

Health(scientific and thechnic funcion).

at provincial and communal level by

health administration.

Further laws,in the 50s

established mutual

institutions for

different working

categories, such as

professionals, industry

worker, farmers,

traders, crafts workers,

and minor institutions,

also rules were

different according

each “mutua”. Each

admistration was

indipenent and had

their own specialists

and rules
