Welcome…

Tonight we celebrate our 2018 Hidden Heroes and Sheroes.

This annual celebration has recognized more than 140 people doing

exceptional work to improve the Codman Square and Four Corners

communities. These hidden heroes and sheroes give us hope and

inspiration and tonight is our opportunity to learn more about them

and share our gratitude and appreciation for their efforts.

This celebration also raises funds for two $1,500 scholarships to

be awarded to the two high school senior awardees.

This tradition began over 20 years ago by Rev. Dr. Bill Loesch.

We are honoring the late Rev. Dr. Bill Loesch for his invaluable

legacy by establishing the Rev. Dr. Bill Loesch Scholarship Fund,

which will fund the two educational youth scholarships of $1,500

and other scholarship opportunities.

If you wish to nominate a person or group for November 2019,

please submit a nomination form. Applications are received all

year long and selections are made by the end of summer.

Let's celebrate!

Thank you for your dedication and

vision for the community!

Janice Galloway Neighborhood Leadership Award

Janice was born in Level Piece, St. John’s, in the Caribbean island of Montserrat and migrated to Boston in 1979. She first learned that she could be a mover and shaker at Greenwood United Methodist Church where she learned how to work collaboratively with others, and motivate youth. She was involved in fundraising and a range of other activities in

the church. She experienced group spirit as the United Methodist Women (UMW) invited her to roller-skating, or to the movies, and even into the kitchen to whip up meals to feed the congregation.

Janice joined the Aspirers Club in 1994 and over the years, she has filled many roles in the organization including serving as Secretary, Vice President, and being elected as the first female President in 2009. She has been instrumental in member recruitment, planning a successful boat-ride, assisting with the tutorial program, fundraising and shipping equipment for the hospital and Seniors Home in Montserrat. She also supports other Montserrat and Caribbean Associations in Boston, New York, Miami, and Toronto.

On September 18, 2018 Janice celebrated 18 years of working at Akamai Technologies, Inc. and has become a well-known staple in the Network Operations Command Center (NOCC). She has gone from the only woman in the room to shift manager in the headquarters of the Kendall Square location.

Janice works to connect with other cultures such as the Irish International Immigrant Center (IIIC) as a Co-chair of the Cross-Cultural Committee and as a member of the Board. She also serves as secretary of the mem-bership Committee and Trustees Board at Parkway United Methodist Church and Vice President of the Metro Boston Hope District United Methodist Women.

Janice’s upbringing instilled the need to give back and she is continually working to improve her neighborhood, and seeking opportunities to help and support Montserratians worldwide. Her leisure activities include reading, dancing, and international travel.

Caltor McLean Neighborhood Leadership Award

married with five children and four grand-

children. He attended Boston University

and studied computer science in 1986

which led to a career of more than 20 years

in the computer industry.

He is also an independent business owner

and commercial real estate owner.

He survived the greatest financial collapse during our time in 2008.

While other businesses were closing or going out of business,

Caltor adjusted to the economy and made prudent financial deci-

sions, which sustained his businesses during these incredible finan-

cial and stressful years.

Caltor has been doing business in the Dorchester community for

over twenty years, owning Emz Rainbow Laundromat, LLC and

Emz Pizza and Ice Cream, LLC (d.b.a. Cornerstone Pizza Café).

He also owns the commercial property of 3 -11 Bowdoin Street

and 352 Washington Street (known as Cornerstone Lot). He is

one of the longest lasting businesses in the Greater Four Corners

area. He currently serves on the board of the Four Corners Main

Street.

Caltor has a passion for advocating and fighting for the children

born at a disadvantage and families in need. He serves his

community with great humility and compassion and often feeds

families in the neighborhood that would have gone without food.

Caltor hopes to foster a business environment in which business-

es are thriving and not simply surviving in the Four Corners com-

munity.

“Congratulations to all of the winners of the Codman Square Neighborhood Council’s 2018

‘Hidden Heroes and Sheroes’ Awards. Thank you for your continued efforts in helping to make our communities safer, healthier and

Andrea Campbell Millennium Award

Andrea Joy Campbell was first elected

as the District 4 Boston City Councilor

on November 3rd, 2015, representing

primarily the neighborhoods of Dorches-

ter and Mattapan, as well as parts of Roslin-

dale and Jamaica Plain. On January 1st,

2018, at the start of her second term,

Councilor Campbell was unanimously

elected Boston City Council President by her colleagues. She is the

first African-American woman to serve in this role.

Born and raised in Boston, and educated in all Boston Public

Schools, Councilor Campbell went on to graduate from Princeton

University and UCLA Law School. She began her career at a non-

profit in Roxbury, providing free legal services to students and their

parents on education matters. She has worked as legal counsel in

both the public and private sectors, and before embarking on her

run for City Council, served as deputy legal counsel for Governor

Deval Patrick.

Councilor Campbell began her first term by chairing and expanding

the Council’s Committee on Public Safety to include Criminal Justice

in an effort to bring important conversations around re-entry services

for returning citizens, solitary confinement, and the school-to-prison

pipeline, to the Council. As one of the lead sponsors of the Communi-

ty Preservation Act, she led the effort for its successful passage in

2016, which will generate millions of dollars annually for affordable

housing, historic preservation, and open space in the City of Boston.

In 2017, she secured the first-ever dedicated line item in the City’s

budget to specifically fund youth development programming and

youth serving organizations. Councilor Campbell continues to focus

on issues of public safety and criminal justice, affordable housing, and

racial equity initiatives. Councilor Campbell lives in Mattapan with

her husband, Matthew, and their son, Alexander.

pionships. She is an all-star for basketball and

track and field for the Catholic Conference.

When she is not studying or playing sports she volunteers as a coach

and referee for the co-ed South End Youth Basketball League. She is

an assistant coach for the Merritt Attention Basketball Association

fourth grade team, a program that mainly serves Dorchester, Roxbury

and Mattapan boys. Amani also volunteers and assists with organizing

the Boston Showstoppers free basketball clinics for inner city girls.

Additionally, she works with Mobil Stu, a non-profit organization that

builds relationships between the police and inner city youth through

music. Amani and her father volunteer serving the homeless food and

she also assists her mother with organizing coat drives for the home-

less. One of Amani’s proudest moments is when she organized and

led the televised student protest at her school. The protest led to the

school hiring more teachers and addressing the lack of teacher diversi-

ty; adding more SAT prep classes and electives; improving lunches;
