Johns Creek, GA – More than 160 people with developmental disabilities, from age 17 to 70, gathered together this April for a memorable evening of dinner and dancing. The Dream Big Dance is a prom-type event for people with developmental disabilities, sponsored by the Johns Creek Civitan Club and Mount Pisgah Special Needs Ministry.

“The Johns Creek Civitans are very appreciative of the Johns Creek Foundation’s generous donation to help make the ‘Dream Big’ Prom an unforgettable experience for the special needs community,” said Glenn Rudh, president of the Johns Creek Civitan Club. “Everyone was treated to a magical evening from the moment they entered Mount Pisgah through an arch of red and silver balloons, to dinner and dancing. It was a night to remember for all the guests and volunteers.”

The dance had more than 70 volunteers to make sure the event went off without a hitch. The Mount Pisgah Special Needs Ministry also held a formal wear drive, collecting more than 175 donations of jackets and dresses so the attendees could look their finest.

HAPPY FEET IN JOHNS CREEK

June 23, 2016 was an extremely anticipated day, as the Doubletree by Hilton Atlanta Marietta hotel was filled with Junior Civitans from all across North America. You could feel the excitement, as the delegates began to register for the 36th annual convention. The convention officially began Thursday evening with Opening Ceremonies, where our 2016-17 International theme “Rooted in Service,” was announced and the state of the organization was given by 2015-16 Junior Civitan International President, Kali Wilson. Following President Wilson’s address, delegates were able to hear from the electrifying Shane Feldman, founder and CEO of Count Me In. Mr. Feldman gave an inspiring speech about setting goals for ourselves and working hard to reach them, which was a great primer for the rest of the week. To end our schedule on Thursday, delegates were invited to a “Welcome to the Jungle,” themed dance to cap off a great first day.

The following morning, delegates heard from Dr. Aundrea Bartley from the Civitan International Research Center and the outstanding work that Junior Civitans sponsor each year through their fundraising for the Center. Following the very informative spotlight from Dr. Bartley, delegates headed to workshops to prepare for their year as successful leaders. Once the workshops ended, delegates gathered for the Meet the Candidates Luncheon to hear from the candidates hoping to lead the organization to new heights in the 2016-17 year. Once the final candidate had presented their platform and the final question had been answered, delegates were driven to “An Evening of Service” at Kennesaw Mountain National Park, where we helped clear trails and were treated to a beautiful view of Atlanta at the mountaintop. Friday wrapped up at the hotel with a fun evening of movies and games.

Saturday morning began with the seating of the voting delegates to elect the 2016-17 International Board. Once the much anticipated announcements had been made, the philanthropy program began. Clubs and districts were honored for their hard work throughout the year and highlighted their service through environmental and social causes awareness projects.Honor Clubs were also presented with much deserved recognition.

Saturday night, delegates were able to honor the 2015-16 board, witnessed the 2016-17 board’s induction into office and celebrated the year’s accomplishments with the awards ceremony. Following the banquet and awards program, the farewell dance partymarked the last night of convention. Always bittersweet, the closing of the dance signified the ending of a Junior Civitan year with goodbyes to graduating seniors, but a welcome hello to a new year in service. The 36th Junior Civitan International Convention was definitely a life changing experience and I hope you will join us for the 37th Junior Civitan International convention in Birmingham, Alabama as we celebrate 100 years of Civitan!

his home club’s president and vice president, International Vice President, and twice as Alabama Central governor. Residing in Alexander City, Alabama,

The Social Causes Awareness Campaign is designed to bring awareness

and put an end to pertinent issues that affect our society today. Junior

Civitan International puts major emphasis on Social Cause Awareness

Campaigns because as youth service workers, we can bring about

positive change to individuals who struggle.

The BBC conducted an online Disability website poll to see which words

were the most offensive to disabled people. The poll had more than

2,000 submissions of input (many of the votes came from non-disabled

people) and found that the word “retard” was the most offensive word with

almost 20% of total votes. Because of the word’s damaging use, your Interna-

tional Board of Directors has selected the “Spread the Word to End the Word

Campaign.” This is a movement to put an end to the derogatory use of the r-word

“retard/retarded” by informing the public of its harmful emotional and mental effects on others

and by normalizing the intellectually disabled in society with respectful treatment and active,

inclusive involvement. Especially because Civitan International is very involved with people

who have disabilities, we believe that this campaign is particularly suitable - it speaks to many

of our values and goals as Junior Civitans. Measures have already been taken to end the word

on a national level. On October 5, 2010, U.S. President Barack Obama signed a bill, Rosa’s Law,

which removes the terms “mental retardation” and “mentally retarded” from federal health,

education and labor policy and replaces them with non-derogatory phrases such as “individual

with an intellectual disability” and “intellectual disability.” Let us join others in the progressive

movement to end the word by campaigning against it!

The Board has chosen the “Spread the Word to End the Word” Campaign as its Social Causes

Awareness project, but you and your club are not required to do a project related to it. If there

is a social issue that you are passionate about and is especially prevalent in your community, you

may do a project related to that issue. However, we would like to see as many Junior Civitans

partake in this year’s campaign. We believe it will bring about much-needed positive change and

will unify us as a service organization. Get out there in the community, make positive change,

and have fun! Also, do not forget to report your amazing work to your district and international!

and December as well as throughout the

rest of the year, your Junior Civitan club is

through our Collection Selection campaign!

World Junior Civitan Day falls on October 29 this year. This purpose of World Junior Civitan day is to

purposefully recognize the importance of service and dedicate time to a project. This annual, on-going

campaign helps improve many communities each year! Here’s a list of possible projects you and your club

or district can participate in:

• Parkclean-up

• Participateinacampaigntosaveenergy

• Collectbooksforalocalchildren’shospital

• Makinglunchforthehomeless

• Volunteeratasoupkitchen

• Collectfoodforanimalsatalocalshelterandvolunteerfortheday

Any kind of project constitutes World Junior Civitan Day service, because society welcomes any kind of improvement to the community!

Be creative and try projects that tailor to the needs of your community. This day is a perfect opportunity to conduct a District Project (one

component of the Honor District Award Application). Districts need not meet up at a central location just to do a project - clubs can stay where

they are and do the same project in their local communities, as long as clubs within the District are participating on the same day (and on the

same project if they want credit for Honor District.)

President’s Message

Hello Junior Civitans!

I am so excited for this year and hope that you all are as prepared to be as “Rooted in Service” as I am. I feel as though this year will be one of the best Junior Civitan has seen! In July, your International Board held our first meeting in Birmingham, Alabama at Civitan

World Headquarters to prepare for the year and set goals for what we would like to see happen in the organization. One focus for the year we decided was extremely important is improved communication. With that being said, we would love for you to join us on the “Junior Civitans Around The World” Facebook group to share all of the great meetings, programs and projects that are going on in your clubs.

To help make a lasting impact on this organization and the programs and projects that the Civitan International Foundation supports, you can personally make a difference by fundraising to attend Dance-a-thon. This twelve hour dance marathon held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is open to any Junior Civitan during the weekend of March 10-13, 2017! With your help, we can make this year outstanding alongside our parent organization as they celebrate their 100th year of service. As we begin our year together, if you need any assistance please do not hesitate to contact me as, I would love to help you in any way. So go out there, get involved and help Junior Civitan to “make the world a better place!”
