Phoenix P-12 Community College Early Learning Centre – Victorian State Government announcement.

The Victorian Coalition Government’s commitment to improving opportunities for Early Learning in communities will see a new Early Learning Centre being constructed at the Redan Campus of Phoenix P-12 Community College.

The Early Learning Centre will involve a partnership between the Eureka Community Kindergarten Association (ECKA) and Phoenix P-12 Community College, as part of the Ballarat South Community Learning Precinct. I need to acknowledge Brett McKinnis and the ECKA Board of Management, along with Jo Guerts (CEO ECKA) for their continued work in evolving this incredible partnership with Phoenix P-12 Community College.

Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development, the Hon Wendy Lovell, together with Member for Western Victoria Region, Simon Ramsay, announced that the Coalition Government was providing a capital works grant of $650,000 to support the Phoenix P-12 Community College business consortium (Phoenix P-12 Community College, ECKA, BSCHub, Melbcon and Wethling Gardening Services) to deliver the Centre.

Please call in at the General Office on either the Redan or Sebastopol campus for an enrolment pack and any information that may be of assistance.

Redan Primary Campus – New 4/5 group added this Term. It gives me great pleasure to announce that we have

added another group to the Primary campus. Due to unprecedented enquiries, we have formed a new class to alleviate growing school numbers and further support the learning in the Year 4 and 5 areas.

Can I take this opportunity to welcome Mr. Addam Storey, an experienced educator, to our high quality teaching team. Addam has been a long term teacher at Delacombe PS and will be a valued part of our strong learning platform. The new class has started well and is quickly becoming a group of enthusiastic learners. Magic stuff!

‘Aladdin Jnr’ – College Production 2014

In the last week of Term 2, I had the fantastic chance to view the Phoenix P-12 Community College Musical Production ‘Aladdin Jnr’. What an outstanding performance it was, absolutely amazing! It showcased the incredible talent of students from Year 4 right through to Year 12; with spectacular lighting, songs and ever changing acts, it was something to behold.

This College Production played to over 900 Primary School students from areas around Ballarat in a Matinée showing, and feedback has been nothing short of outstanding.

I continue to be especially proud of the continued support of ex-students who gave up their time to mentor the development of our current student group. A real school pride, displaying leadership at its best. Congratulations to all involved, especially the Production Team led by Mrs. Deanne Joosten and Mr. John Netherway.

Finally, special thanks to ‘The Awesome Crew’. You have every reason to feel very PROUD.

Community Initiative – Youth Sponsorship of Community Groups. As part of our community focus at Phoenix P-12 Community College, we have combined with three business partners (Crockers, Viatek – Business Solutions and Melbcon – Construction) to develop a youth directed sponsorship group. This sensational venture has provided a substantial injection of money and resources to support the Smythesdale Junior Football

and Netball Club in 2013 / 2014.

The sponsorship business group is recognised as the ‘YOUTH – Community Development Coalition’ and has directed approximately $7,000 for new junior team football jumpers (3 teams), and 4 new team netball uniforms to support the ongoing development of kids around health and fitness in their local community. This will be an ongoing venture and will target another community organisation in 2015.

Can I personally thank our sensational sponsorship partners; Crockers, Viatek and Melbcon who have so generously come on board with Phoenix P-12 Community College to make this thrilling project a reality.

Senior School Update Term 3 is an important term for all Senior School students as the need to complete outcomes and keep up to date with work becomes increasingly important. Please ensure that you keep in contact with your student’s teachers to help with support. Most coursework for Year 12 units will be completed this term and then students will need to ensure all outcomes and competencies are complete. The Year 10 Health Day will be held on July 25th at Federation University. This is a great opportunity for Year 10 students to visit the University and get a feel for tertiary education. The informative program runs all day and students will have the opportunity to experience five different workshops.

The process for Subject Selection will also be conducted this term and students will have several opportunities to discuss their Pathway options for next year. It is vitally important for parents to access the Information Session and ensure that selections are determined in

Middle School Update A lot has happened since the last Middle School update. I have had the pleasure of attending the Leadership Camp, where I watched 20 extraordinary young people challenge themselves to try new things and work productively in teams. I have to admit my favourites were the World Record Balloon Pop attempt and the Vertical Challenge. Overcoming my fear of heights is always going to be tough for me, but watching young people climb the 18 metres with no fear at all left me in awe. Some even had the guts to race up the tower!

Many of our students have busy School Holidays. They embark on camps, holidays and other special challenges. One such student is Kaitlyn Brown from Year 7. She was selected to represent Victoria at the National Titles in Calisthenics. We congratulate Kaitlyn for her successful participation and the wonderful third position she achieved.

We have provided our Year 9’s with new lockers and we are pleased with the way they have adjusted to the changes. The start of term presented us with a number of challenges. The rain over the holidays meant that the school was inundated with mud. The builders and plumbers worked around the clock on the last weekend of the break to ensure that all was safe for students. We thank students for their tolerance during this time of disruption.

Before very long we will embark on Subject Selections. This will see our Year 7 students select their entire program for the first time. Year 9’s will prepare to make the exciting move into the Senior School. Students are advised to reflect on their end of semester reports in preparation for this important task.

Uniform Reminders: Notice to all students and parents: The College Uniform Policy clearly states that the only facial piercing that is allowed is a small stud in the nose. Those students who have had new facial piercings have three options. Remove the piercing altogether.

Work in time out for the duration of the time that it takes for the piercing to heal.

We thank those parents who write notes when their students are out of uniform. However we remind both students and parents that it is College Policy to provide students with a replacement piece of College uniform for the time that the student will be unable to wear their own uniform. ROBOCUP COMPETITION In June a team of Year 7 students came in second

place with their Lego Robot in the Ballarat Regional

Championships of Robocup Junior Australia. Hayley

Page, Samuel Ludbrook and Brandon Kern have

worked at lunchtimes for a few months to program

their robot to ‘dance’ in time to a song within a 3m

square dance floor. Their team was called “Happy

Minions” and they used Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”

as their music.

The “Happy Minions” worked terrifically well

together as a team and were able to acknowledge

each other’s efforts and work cooperatively. They

got on famously with students from other schools

who were competing and were a credit to

themselves and the College.

for supporting the students throughout the year in

this extra-curricular program.

Roboclub will be taking on new members from the

start of Term 3, so please encourage any Lego-

loving computer programmers of the future in Years

Phoenix P-12 Community College 2014 TERM 3 INTERIM REPORTS

& PARENT/STUDENT/TEACHER PATHWAY INTERVIEWS

Interim Reports will be mailed out to parents during the week ending August 22nd 2014.

Parent/Student/Teacher Pathway Interviews will be conducted as follows:

Session 1: Thursday Afternoon/Evening September 4th, 4.00 – 7.00pm Session 2: Friday September 5th, 9.00am – 4.00pm

During August Teachers will be completing Interim Reports for every student in every subject. Parents can expect to receive Student Interim Reports after Monday 25th August.

With the Interim Report you will also find information and interview booking/appointment sheets for the Parent/Student/Teacher interviews. These interview times will run over two sessions as listed above.

It is expected that students will accompany their parents to the interviews.

The format of the interviews will be the same as previous years and it will be essential for students to book appointment times that suit both parents and teachers.

These interviews will provide an excellent opportunity for both parents and students to discuss the Interim Report and the general progress being made.

Phoenix P-12 Community College Debutante Ball

The end of Term 2 saw 13 of our Year 11 and 12 girls presented as Debutantes, supported by their chosen Squires at our annual

Debutante Ball. Our couples all looked the part in their flowing gowns and evening tailcoats, with accessories to reflect the College

colours. The students attended eight dance lessons leading up to the Ball; their effort shone through on the night with all participants

dancing gracefully. The event was held at the Terrace Room, Bray Raceway, where the Debs, Squires and their guests enjoyed a

three course formal dinner and danced the night away to SJH Entertainment. The Debutantes and Squires were wonderful

ambassadors for the College, not only showing pride in themselves but also upholding the College values. Congratulations to all

participants on a spectacular event.

JUNIOR BANDS’ PERFORMANCE

The Phoenix P-12 Community College Band had its performance debut in June. The students have been rehearsing as a group for only a short time and their performance was exceptional. Parents and family members enjoyed the performance of these budding musicians. A number of these musicians had their first exposure to music in 2013 in the Transition Band. It is terrific to see their musical prowess develop and also their commitment to performance. Well done to all concerned.

“Put Yourself in the Picture” When I started at Phoenix P-12 Community College I thought that Year 12 wouldn’t come quickly enough. Now that I

am half way through Year 11 I am anxious about the future. I have questions that need to be answered like “Which

University should I go to?” “What Pathway should I choose?” “Which University will suit me?” “Will I have to leave

home?”

Our College Careers Centre ran an excursion to Federation University, Mount Helen Campus. When we arrived it was

very daunting because not knowing your way around makes you feel insecure. However when we were split into groups

with College staff and staff and students from Federation University, who were very informative and supportive, this

made it a lot more comfortable being at the University, especially when asking questions. They explained our options,

pathways, careers, where we would live and how they could help us achieve our goals.

For me, knowing what career I’d like to specialise in helps me while I am at high school, but doesn’t help when I leave;

I know nothing about Universities. I believed that I only had three Universities to choose from: Deakin Geelong

Waterfront Campus, Deakin Warrnambool or Melbourne University.

This excursion has broadened my knowledge and made me more aware of how and where I will study. Now all there is

left to do is fulfil that pathway one step at a time. I definitely recommend taking this opportunity to attend this

excursion next year; partake in all the Open Days and read the career booklets and VTAC books/guides available in the

Careers Centre. Ms. Kennedy is

also there to answer all those little

questions we all have.

FROM THE BUSINESS MANAGER Access to the College

Welcome to Term 3; you will have noticed huge progress in the works around the College grounds and building sites. With this work comes restricted access to the grounds and a little more difficulty in accessing the College buildings. Please make sure, for the safety of all and

security of our students, that you always enter the College grounds through the front gate and report directly to the General Office where the reception team will assist you. You will be asked to wait in the foyer until the person you are wishing to see comes to see you and if picking up your child, until your child comes to you in the foyer. Please do not access the buildings from any other pathway into the site as you will be directed back to the General Office by any staff member you meet. Visitors must ALWAYS report to the General Office when arriving to keep a safe and secure learning environment for our students. Thank you for your cooperation.

Family Accounts Thank you to those families who continue to support their child(ren’s) education by paying their Educational costs. Statements are sent out regularly via email to keep you informed of the state of your accounts. A number of families still

have outstanding accounts which are well overdue and payment would be appreciated at your earliest convenience. If you require assistance with your account, please do not hesitate to contact me (Lorraine Hayes) through the General Office. We can make payment arrangements if required.

Please be reminded that all excursion costs must be pre-paid and permission forms MUST be returned prior to the excursion day. Students cannot attend if this process is not followed.

Annual College Magazine Please note the cost of the College Magazine – “The Year That Was 2014” is included on statements and must be paid to ensure your child receives a copy of the 2014 Magazine. We will again distribute the Magazine as a memory card - and it will contain photos, stories and treasured memories of your child’s year at school. Please make sure you have paid your educational costs nice and early to ensure your child receives their copy of “The Year That Was 2014”.

EMA - Second Payment The second payment of EMA will be processed shortly. Please note if you have claimed EMA in February, and are still eligible, you do not have to make a second claim. ANGLESEA LEADERSHIP CAMP

In June twenty excited students and four staff (Drew Layton, Mitch Jolly, Police Youth Resource Officer Des Hudson and Karen Snibson), headed to Anglesea YMCA camp for our third annual three day Leadership Camp.

The purpose of the camp was to give students an opportunity to bond as a Leadership Team; to work on initiative activities and also to extend students beyond their comfort zone in “Challenge by choice activities”.

Our itinerary consisted of some super cool activities such as survivor canoeing, vertical challenge, a world record attempt at balloon popping and the giant swing.

Once again our students proved that they have exceptional problem solving skills, tremendous respect for one another when working in teams and also enormous capacity for leadership.

Phoenix P-12 College has the "WRITE STUFF."

A number of our Sebastopol Campus students entered a national writing competition earlier in the year. In the last two weeks I have been notified that a number of our entries have made it through to the finals. Their pieces will be seen in the national "WRITE4Fun" publication. This is a fantastic achievement and the students should be commended for their efforts. This brings our students’ writing abilities at Phoenix to the national stage. Battle for Knowledge

My name is Bridget Douhadji. I am an eighteen year old student in my final year of secondary schooling, a

fact that leads me to reflect on the importance of education to me and, dare I say, to all young people.

My family is originally from Togoland, but I spent most of my life in a refugee camp in Ghana. The

conditions in the camp were very hard. But of all the hardships we endured the limited access to education

was the most difficult to bear. We lost any real sense of worth or hope for the future.

This became more apparent when we eventually were able to come to Australia just over three years ago

because I could not speak, read or write in English. I struggled for some time to become literate in English,

but through the education offered to me I slowly became more proficient. This dramatically changed my life!

All sorts of future options now seemed possible. I felt that I was a valued citizen of Australia ... A real

Aussie. I am aiming to become a nurse and have taken on a nurse placement as part of my Year 12 studies.

I now understand that education gives us the means to take charge of our lives regardless of our background.

My life experience leads me to believe that every child deserves the opportunity to get an education.

Education has changed, and is changing, my life; it is the most powerful weapon we have to change the world

for the better.

Dormant

Two years ago on 30th December 2012, I woke that afternoon feeling as though my body was

trying to reject me. I sat up dizzy, my heart racing faster than humanly possible. I was

confused about what was going on. I know it had something to do with my diabetes. I’ve

had it since I was eleven; the doctors told me I was Type 1 and that I’ve had it since

birth, but it lay dormant within me like a bear hibernating throughout the winter. At

this moment I had noticed my brother standing over me; he looked concerned for my

health. I told him, “I feel as though I’m having a heart attack.” He looked at me and

said with a stern voice, ”Would you rather die in bed, or in hospital?” To say the least

I was scared, I didn’t want to die at the age of fifteen.

My father took me to the nearest Medical Centre in which I was placed upon a bed and

waited for a Doctor to analyze me. Finally the Doctor arrived; he checked my heart rate

and my temperature and said that I should head to hospital straight away. My father

returned me home so that we could pick up my mother so she could accompany me to the

Emergency Room. I don’t remember much about the trip to hospital; only that I kept

slipping in and out of consciousness and that I really needed to expel the evil from my

stomach. We finally arrived at the Emergency Room. There was only one person in line (a

lady) and I took a seat behind her. Unfortunately the evil within me had other ideas and

so it forced me to exorcize it from my body and onto the floor at the lady’s feet,

making her leave the line and allowing me access to help from the Doctors on the other

side of the door.

I was in hospital for about a week or so. In that time I had to enjoy New Year’s Day

and my birthday the day afterwards; I didn’t have many visitors; only my family members

and the occasional Doctor.

STUDENTS PERFORM

WITH OPERA AUSTRALIA

The Magic Flute Opera, composed by Mozart, is a

quest for wisdom and true love. Set in Egypt, this

fully staged production enchanted audiences with

1930s costumes, a chamber orchestra and a vibrant

enthusiastic cast of Opera Australia stars with

Ballarat's Children's Chorus.

In preparation for this exciting event, students

rehearsed music throughout Term 2 and during the

school holidays with Chorus leaders Paula Heenan

(BCMA) and Lana Ford (Phoenix College) and had

the opportunity to work with Opera Australia's

Chorus Master, Alex Pringle.

Duncan who were chosen to be members of the

Ballarat Children’s Chorus, along with students

from BCMA for Opera Australia's production of

“The Magic Flute" that was staged at Her

Majesty's Theatre in Ballarat on Thursday 17th

July.

Many lasting friendships were formed and special

memories that will last for a lifetime with our

students. We are all very proud of our students’

determination and vocal talents to perform Opera at

such a young age in an Opera Australia production.

YOUTH PARLIAMENT

PROGRAM Phoenix P-12 Community College has seen their third

consecutive team take part in the YMCA Youth

Parliament program this year, with the team debating a

Bill for mandatory driving tests for elderly citizens. The

event takes place in Parliament House in Melbourne.

The six young team members have aimed to implement

the Bill in order to reduce the Victorian road toll. “[The]

road toll relating to elderly drivers is at an all-time high,”

17-year-old team member, Maddison Sharp said.

“[We hope] to regulate annual driving tests for motorists

over the age of 65. Everybody should be given the right

to feel safe on the roads.”

The Bill indicates 45 people aged over 75 were killed on

the Victorian roads in 2013, whilst 39% of all pedestrian

deaths were 75 years or older.

“As people age, their reflexes do as well,” said

Maddison. “We want Victoria’s road toll to decrease,

and we hope that other states will follow our example.”

The team: Maddison Sharp, Jackson Ford, Sarah Lauder,

Bradley Macdonald, Joshua Liston and Kimberley Cody

went on the camp over a period of six days; three of

those days were spent in Parliament debating Bills

proposed by other Youth Parliamentarians. The Bill

'Implementation of Mandatory Driving Tests' passed

successfully within this stage and will go on to be

considered for other staging of the Bills. The camp was

at Lake Dewar Lodge and run by a series of YMCA staff

members called the 'taskforce'. As well as being a

political camp, it was also very focused on personal

development and leadership. They also attended a

training camp leading up to the week-long camp, to

prepare and understand how the debating process would

work. This week proved to be incredibly insightful and

allows youths to ultimately have their voices heard.

Our students were all grateful for the experience; it builds

up the quality of their speaking skills while learning

processes of Parliament and how to debate real and

relevant issues. They would encourage anyone to take

the opportunity to participate in this program.

Hoodies and windcheaters are not

part of College uniform. The only

additional item for winter is the

blazer or jacket which can be worn

at all times during the day. These

can be purchased at

Crockers or Lowes.

Hem length – Stipulated hem length

is 5cm above the knee; this applies

to both the winter skirt and dress.

Where students continue to flaunt

this policy a letter will be sent home

with a stipulated time to have the

hem length corrected. Those who do

not comply will be provided with the

opportunity to work in time out.
