Page 2: IN LOVING MEMORY OF Larry Andrew Fuller

The ObituaryLarry Andrew Fuller was born to Andrew Fuller and Parthenia Ward Fuller on October 2, 1949, in Washington, DC. Larry attended a number of public schools and graduated from Eastern High School in the DC area. He attended Federal City where he played college football and also attended Montgomery Junior College. He was an artist when it came to maps and technical drawings, for which he won awards and talked about becoming an engineer.

As a youth, he was industrious doing odd jobs and helping the neighbors haul groceries. Later, he joined his father working at the A&P Grocery Store as a cashier. He also worked on a contract as a laborer at L’Enfant Plaza. Larry worked a series of jobs. He was a distribution agent for W.T. Weaver and Sons Hardware in the heart of Georgetown (Northwest DC), delivering hardware to many businesses and the residents of individuals such as President Nixon and other prominent government officials.

After a few years, Larry decided to look to the future and find a better job that had long-term benefits; so, he went to work with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit (WMAT) in 1978. He began as a laborer, setting rail in place, but his talents were soon spotted by his supervisors, Mr. Cooksey, and Mr. Kiley, and he became a Track Inspector. He was very instrumental in helping to build the subway system in the nation’s capital. Larry was very dedicated to his work. He worked long hours and always sought to keep the men he managed and the public who rode the subway system as safe as he could to the best of his ability; always staying late to make out reports and work details and schedules to repair or replace damaged rail for the overnight crews to perform. The next day Larry did the inspections to make sure of the accuracy. Since he was considered “essential personnel,” he had to stay on the job during weather emergencies, sometimes for days at a time. For example, during the blizzard of 1996.

Larry retired from WMATA in 2005 after twenty-eight years of faithful service due to health issues. He and his wife, Burnette, relocated to Grovetown, Georgia (outside of Augusta) where she grew up. The following year, he was joined by his older brother, John “Jay”. They spent lots of time exploring and learning about their new environment. Larry had a large extended family and loved spending time and visiting with them. He especially enjoyed spending time in Madison, Virginia with his many family members and friends. He often took his son, Chris, Chris’ sister, LaLisha Colbert, nephews, and nieces on trips to beaches and amusement parks and different petting zoos and other cultural activities and museums.

Larry always enjoyed telling stories and making people laugh. He could tell the same story many times over and get a good laugh from listeners. He was always a shoulder to lean on for family and friends and was prepared to give advice to those who needed guidance.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Johh Ward, and sisters, Diane Fuller and Joan A. Fuller. Larry is survived by: his wife, Burnette W. Fuller; son, Chris Marshall; stepdaughter, LeLeisha Colbert; sisters, Annie F. (Fitzgerald) Walton, Betty L. Fuller and Carla P. Fuller; brothers, Mark S. Fuller, Paul L. Fuller and Dail S. (Wanda) Fuller; sisters-in-law, Betty Dunaway, Sandy Walton-Wallace, Annie W. (Marion) Johnson and Merilyn M. Walton; brothers-in-law, Dandy (Marie) Walker; and a host of other relatives and friends.
