In MemoryAs Catholics we believe that our souls go on long after we have taken our last earthly breath. Indeed, in God’s eter-
nal love and presence, we become a member of the Communion of Saints which is celebrated at each Eucharist as a
gathering of the Body of Christ. We remember:

The Sacrament of Matrimony Fr. Joe Kuharski, Guest Writer
Greetings in Christ!
It has been a joy to read up more about the great gift
of the Sacrament of Matrimony as I have been prepar-
ing for the series on marriage that I’ve been having on
Tuesday evenings. St. John Paul II would say that all of
the sacraments “! nd their prototype in some way in marriage as the pri-
mordial sacrament” – and what he means here is that marriage is an inter-
pretive key to understanding all of the sacraments, and, indeed, our whole
relationship with God. It’s no coincidence that at the beginning of the Bible,
with Adam and Eve, and at the end of the Bible, with the Wedding feast of
the Lamb, we see marriage. And all in between, as well, we see consistent
references to God’s “marriage” with his chosen people Israel, like this one:
“For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name” (Is 54:5).
Israel, though, continued to be a “faithless wife” and to turn away from ! del-
ity to the one true God, even after the Lord sent countless prophets to try
to bring her back. They would continue to break their end of the covenant,
or “marriage bond”, and so God would then form a new covenant. In the
fullness of time, God sent His own Son, who would form the “new and ever-
lasting covenant” in His own Body and Blood.
The Sacrament of Marriage, then, is called to a great dignity – to be a living
symbol of the love between Christ and His Church, the Bride. Just as Christ
gave himself completely, even to the point of laying down his life, so the
husband is called to lay down his life for his bride, and the two are called
love each other “in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, as long
as they both shall live.” And what a beautiful witness it is to the rest of our
culture when it is faithfully lived out for 30, 40, or even 50 years!
In order to live out this steadfast, self-giving love, we know from experience
that more is needed than our own e% orts. Statistics tell us the sad news
that relatively few married couples are very happy with their marriage, and
we all know how the divorce rate has skyrocketed in recent decades, so that
it’s now at about 50%. On the other hand, the University of Virginia and the
University of Texas at San Antonio found that up to 83% of couples who
pray together are happy with each other and their marriage. Sociologist
Andrew Greeley even claims that couple prayer has been found amongst
all other factors as the most powerful correlate to contribute to marital
happiness and stability. Our faith could have already told us this, of course:
when a couple builds their marriage on Christ, the sure foundation, then
they are sure to weather the storms of life (see Mt 7:24-27).
To all of our married couples: how have you built your marriage on your
relationship with Christ? If you’re unfamiliar with couple prayer and are
unsure of how to begin, it’s never too late! Just try starting out with a Hail
Mary or an Our Father for the intention of your marriage.

New Mass Setting Begins Next Weekend: Mass of Christ, Light of the Nations Bernie Leach
Parish musicians will lead us in a new Mass setting next weekend. The Mass
of Christ, Light of the Nations is a newer musical Mass setting composed
by Tony Alonso (with GIA – The Gregorian Institute of America) in 2015. It
includes a “through composed” Glory to God, which means the words for
the Glory are sung from beginning to end with no repeat of a refrain. One
of the reasons for starting the setting in November is so that we may learn
the “Glory to God” before the great Solemnity of Christmas. This setting
also includes two penitential acts, one of which will be used during Ad-
vent. In his introduction to the Mass Setting Tony wrote, “My composing
was guided by a deeper sense of how the words sing in the voice of the
liturgical assembly…”
All Saints Mass ScheduleMasses for this holy day of obligation are sched-
uled for October 31 at 5:30 p.m. and November 1

7:00 p.m. in the FCC.
Please note there is NO 8:00 a.m. Mass November 1 and there will be NO Confessions November 1.
All Souls Mass of RemembranceA Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated on All Souls’ Day November 2,
at 7:00 p.m. in the Church. We pray especially for all parishioners who have
died since November 2016.
Mass in Spanish will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. in the FCC.
All Saints and All Souls Bernie Leach
The Solemnity of All Saints this Wednesday is followed by the Commemo-
ration of all the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day) this Thursday. All Saints
commemorates the saints – extraordinary men and women who have lived
lives of holiness. The Catholic tradition teaches that the saints enjoy God’s
presence in death and can intercede for us before God. After having com-
memorated the saints, who enjoy the face of God, we turn our thoughts
every year to other souls who await the fullness of God’s glory. They are the
people we remember on All Souls’ Day. To demonstrate how close these
days are the Catholic Catechism #962 states: “We believe in the commu-
nion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead
who are being puri! ed, and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one
Church.”

Lights of Love to Be Displayed During NovemberLights of Love has been a tradition at St. Stephen’s since 1992. It has been a
wonderful way to remember and pray for loved ones who have passed away,
while raising funds for the parish’s charity account. With Lights of Love we
remember the way these special individuals let their light shine before us in
the past (Mt. 5:16) and pray that they may now enjoy everlasting light.
Throughout the month of November, the lights will be artfully displayed
behind the statue of St. Stephen, our patron saint. As the light fades out-
side, the lights of remembrance for our loved ones will grow in that beauti-
ful corner of our Worship space.
Those who are interested in reserving one or more lights are invited to
complete the form in the bulletin and return it to the parish o! ce any time
now, with a " nal deadline of November 6. The minimum donation is $10.00
per name. The funds generated by this worthwhile project will be set aside
for outreach to those who are in need.
As names are turned in, they will be recorded on sheets that will be placed near
the St. Stephen statue and the number of lights behind St. Stephen will re# ect
the number of names each week. May our loved ones who have gone before
us in death share Christ’s victory and enjoy forever the vision of his glory.

Vocations Committee of St. Stephen’s ParishWhere do vocations to the priest-
hood and religious life come
from? From prayer. We are begin-
ning a Vocations Committee here
at St. Stephen’s to pray for and
support vocations to the priest-
hood, religious life, and diaconate.
God calls many men and women
to serve Him as a priest, deacon,
or religious sister or brother and
they need our prayerful assistance
to answer the call and to remain
faithful to this call. Not only do we
pray for religious vocations, but
also our families are in great need
of strengthening and support.
Please join Father Matthew
Quail Tuesday, November 14 at
7:00 p.m. in the Archbishop
Romero Room to learn how you
can help more men and women
answer God’s call in their lives.

Stewardship Re! ection“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.” – MATTHEW 22:37
Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some person-al possession greater than your love for God? Do you really recognize that everything you have and everything you are is a gift from God? The good news – it’s not too late to put God ! rst in your life in all things.

Priesthood Sunday 2017Priesthood Sunday is celebrated
throughout the United States this
year on October 29. It is a day set
aside to re# ect upon and a$ rm
the role of our priests in the life of
the Church and is promoted by the
United States Council of Serra In-
ternational. Members of the Serra
Club of North-Minneapolis have
made available bookmark/prayer
cards to be distributed at all Masses
as a means to remember in prayer
our priests and deacons who serve
us. You may also wish to drop a
note of appreciation to our priests
thanking them for providing the
gift of the sacraments and for the
many ways they serve our Church and community.
The Serra Club, whose patron is Saint Junipero Serra, is an apostolate dedi-
cated to promoting vocations to the ordained priesthood and vowed reli-
gious life in the Catholic Church. For more information, contact MaryAnne

queridos van a alumbrar a nuestra iglesia.
