In March KG1 The past few weeks we were reading Cheeky Monkey by Julia Don-aldson, The Farmer and the Beet, Communities, Jack and the Bean-stalk, and Policeman. We continued learning about the concept of be-ginning and ending, printing letters, punctuation, spaces between words, and left to right progression.

“If you want your children to be intelligent, read them

Fairytales.” Albert Einstein

“A child who reads, will be an adult who thinks.” unknown

As we progress through the alphabet, and the year, the children are surprising us with their grasp of literacy. This month, we have been learning about the letters G, H, I, and J. With every letter covered, the students practice writing it in uppercase and lowercase, and then draw a picture of what starts with that letter. Recently, the students have really started with their inventive spelling, and most pictures they have drawn now have their annotation describing it. This is happening in all areas of art. From writing about Jack and the Beanstalk, to what their favorite part was of the field trip to see the Fire Engine, they are writing at every opportunity. Well done, KG1!

The students discovered, that if they hold up their left hand, (palm up) and put their thumb out, it makes the shape of the letter “J”. This is helping with directionality.

In January, we introduced to the students writing their family names during morning sign in. Several of the students are now independently writing their first and family names at the top of their papers.

In Math, we have been helping the children to write numbers 5, 6, and 7.

The children worked on patterning and extending patterns, in particu-lar AB, and AAB. The students made their own patterns using differ-ent colors and shapes. They also made symmetrical patterns on butter-flies using colored beads and stones. They also made symmetrical butterflies for the Mother’s Day decorations using print painting.

En MS (KG1), les élèves continuent à

découvrir avec enthou-siasme les

saisons et le climat au désert. De même, ils explorent le vocabu-

laire des métiers et ap-prennent à écrire quel-

ques mots.

P.E

Over the past month in PE we have covered various areas in the How the World Works unit.

The children are learning about teamwork, how we work together as a team, and how to make

friends. The children are also learning about how to interact with each other in a polite and

kind way.

They will learn how to work together to support each other, in a difficult task to reach a com-

mon goal (making friends).

Mother’s Day

Thank you all for joining us to celebrate our first Early Years Mother’s Day performance. The children worked really hard on preparing the decorations, learning the songs, and on their dances. It was very difficult for them to perform on stage in front of such a large audience, but they did an amazing job! I was very proud of each and every one of them!

In April, the students will continue learning to identify upper and lowercase letters, K, L, and M, practice writing them, and also being able to identify their sounds. They will continue work on their emergent writing and inventive spelling with regular reinforcement in class.

We will work with the students to encourage them to retell stories, including more details, while also asking them to use critical think-ing—asking why, where, what, who and when. We will also work with the students to predict what will happen, suggest alternative endings, and to suggest alternative words in key sen-tences.

In math, we will continue learning to write numbers, 8, 9, and 10, using correct direction-ality, while matching them to their values. We will continue working on patterns, and se-quencing using the words first, then, and last,

classification, graphing, measuring, and creat-ing halves.

We will continue our unit learning about com-munity helpers, their tools, where to find them/how to reach them, and the different types of transportation they use.

We will study the veterinarian, hairdresser, and baker, their tools and how they help us.

We will also look at spring and the changes we can see in the environment around us.

Next Month

Our concern for the children’s health and de-velopment is reflected in our snack policy. Each child needs to bring a healthy breakfast and lunch to school with water and a drink. Healthy breakfasts are sandwiches, croissant, fruits, vegetables, cereal, etc. Healthy lunches are home cooking, sandwiches, fruit, vegeta-bles, yoghurt, jelly, etc.

Please send enough healthy food that your child is not hungry.

Please send only one treat (cake, cupcake, chocolate, etc.). This includes sandwiches with chocolate inside. If there is more than one, we will take it away and send it home at the end of the day.

Snack time, like any other part of the day, is also an opportunity for learning about health, social skills, and self help skills. If your child brings and unhealthy snack, he/she will not be allowed to eat it, and it will be sent home. This may upset your child. In order to avoid this, please do not send unhealthy snack food to school. When children see their peers eating healthy foods, they will begin to try them and will learn about a healthy lifestyle that will stay with them. Together we can foster the devel-opment of healthy choices and lifestyle for our children.

Healthy Snack Policy

The KG1 class went to visit the nurse and learn about her job. First she spoke about the importance of self-hygiene, washing their face and hands, brushing their teeth, and showering regularly. Then she showed the students the different tools that she uses, and asked them what they were, and how they were used. She took students’ temperatures using a thermome-ter, their blood pressure using a sphygmoma-nometer, she listened to their chest and heart using a stethoscope, and then she showed the students the red emergency box we take on outings and investigated the contents. We dis-covered it had gloves, gauze, cream for bumps and grazes, pain relieving gel for sprains,

bandages, plasters and Panadol. We pretended that Ronnie fell and hurt his arm, so the nurse bound it with a bandage.

While we were in, a student came in who had cut their finger in class, so we saw how to treat injuries as well.

The students then watched a video about the role of nurses in the hospital and how they help the doctors.

They then practiced how to wash their hands properly.
