Hart Voices – in memoriam - 19 November 2016

They are at rest;

We may not stir the heav'n of their repose

By rude invoking voice, or prayer addrest

In waywardness to those

Who in the mountain grots of Eden lie,

And hear the fourfold river as it murmurs by.

Edward Elgar - They Are At Rest

PROGRAMME OF MUSIC

Taedet Animam Meam

Taedet animam meam vitae meae,

dimittam adversum me eloquium meum,

loquar in amaritudine animae meae.

Dicam Deo: Noli me condemnare:

indica mihi, cur me ita judices.

Numquid bonum tibi videtur,

si calumnieris me, et opprimas me,

opus manuum tuarum,

et consilium impiorum adjuves?

Numquid oculi carnei tibi sunt;

aut, sicut videt homo, et tu videbis?

Numquid sicut dies hominis dies tuae,

My soul is weary of my life,

I will let go my speech against myself,

I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

I will say to God; tell me why

Thou judgest me so.

Doth it seem good to Thee

that Thou shouldst calumniate me, and oppress me,

the work of Thy own hands,

and help the counsel of the wicked?

Hast Thou eyes of flesh:

or, shall Thou see as man seeth?

Are Thy days as the days of man,

and are Thy years as the times of men,

that Thou shouldst inquire after my iniquity,

and search after my sin?

And shouldst know that I have done no wicked

thing, whereas there is no man that can deliver out

of Thy hand.

And soothing sounds

Blend with the neighb'ring waters as they glide;

Posted along the haunted garden's bounds,

Angelic forms abide,

Echoing as words of watch, o'er lawn and grove

The verses of that hymn which Seraphs chant above.

Soloists: Katy Lethbridge, Polla Rashbrook, Sophie Richards, Deryck Martin

Introitus

Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine:

et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Te decet hymnus Deus in Sion,

et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem:

exaudi orationem meam,

ad te omnis caro veniet.

Eternal rest give unto them, O Lord:

and let perpetual light shine upon them.

A hymn, O God, becometh Thee in Sion;

and a vow shall be paid to Thee in Jerusalem.

O hear my prayer,

all flesh shall come to Thee.

Kyrie & Christe

Kyrie eleison.

Christe eleison.

Kyrie eleison.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Hart Voices – in memoriam - 19 November 2016

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden.

For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

For he that is mighty hath magnified me; and holy is his Name.

And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.

He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek.

He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

He remembring his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel; as He promised to our forefathers,

Abraham and his seed forever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Charles Villiers Stanford - Magnificat in G major

Solemn Prelude, In Memoriam from For the Fallen

Edward Elgar arr. Harvey Grace.

Performed by Michael Whytock

Soloist: Clare M Thomas

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word.

For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Charles Villiers Stanford - Nunc Dimittis in G major

Soloist: Roy Rashbrook

Hart Voices – in memoriam - 19 November 2016

Tomás Luis de Victoria - Requiem Mass, 1605

Graduale

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine:

et lux perpetua luceat eis.

In memoria aeterna erit iustus:

ab auditione mala non timebit.

Eternal rest give to them, O Lord:

and let perpetual light shine upon them.

The just shall be in everlasting remembrance,

he shall not fear the evil hearing.

Offertorium

Domine Jesu Christe, Rex gloriae,

libera animas omnium fidelium

defunctorum de poenis inferni,

et de profundo lacu:

libera eas de ore leonis,

ne absorbeat eas tartarus,

ne cadant in obscurum:

sed signifer sanctus Michael,

repraesentet eas in lucem sanctam:

Quam olim Abrahae promisisti,

et semini eius.

Hostias et preces tibi, Domine,

laudis offerimus:

tu suscipe pro animabus illis,

quarum hodie memoriam facimus:

fac eas, Domine,

de morte transire ad vitam.

Quam olim Abrahae promisisti,

et semini eius.

O Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory,

deliver the souls of all the faithful

departed from the pains of hell

and from the deep pit:

deliver them from the lion’s mouth,

that hell may not swallow them up,

nor they fall into darkness;

but may the holy standard-bearer, Michael,

lead them into the holy light:

which Thou didst promise to Abraham

and to his seed.

Sacrifices and prayers we offer to Thee, O Lord;

receive them

for those souls for whom this day

we make memorial.

Let them, O Lord,

pass from death unto life.

Which Thou didst promise to Abraham

and to his seed.

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills: from whence cometh my help.

My help cometh even from the Lord: who hath made heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: and he that keepeth thee will not sleep.

Behold, he that keepeth Israel: shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord himself is thy keeper: the Lord is thy defence upon thy right hand;

So that the sun shall not burn thee by day: neither the moon by night.

The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: yea, it is even he that shall keep thy soul.

The Lord shall preserve thy going out, and thy coming in: from this time forth for evermore.

Henry Walford-Davies - Psalm 121

Soloists: Catherine Schlieben, Mike Huddie

Hart Voices – in memoriam - 19 November 2016

Thomas Tallis - If Ye Love Me

God be in my head, and in my understanding;

God be in mine eyes, and in my looking;

God be in my mouth, and in my speaking;

God be in my heart, and in my thinking;

God be at mine end, and at my departing.

Henry Walford-Davies - God be in my Head

The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,

And the pain of death shall not touch them.

To the eyes of the foolish,

They seemed to perish; but they are in peace.

Geraint Lewis - The Souls of the Righteous

- Interval -

Please join us for some light refreshments during the interval

If ye love me,

keep my commandments,

and I will pray the Father,

and he shall give you another comforter,

that he may 'bide with you forever,

e'en the spirit of truth.

Sanctus

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus,

Dominus Deus Sabaoth,

Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua.

Hosanna in excelsis.

Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.

Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, Holy, Holy,

Lord God of Hosts,

Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Agnus Dei

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,

dona eis requiem.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,

dona eis requiem.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,

dona eis requiem sempiternam.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,

grant them rest.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,

grant them rest.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world,

grant them eternal rest.

Charles Hubert Hastings Parry - Songs of Farewell

Never, Weather-beaten Sail

Never weather-beaten sail

more willing bent to shore.

Never tired pilgrim's limbs

affected slumber more,

Than my wearied sprite

now longs to fly

out of my troubled breast:

O come quickly, sweetest Lord,

and take my soul to rest.

Ever blooming are the joys

of Heaven's high Paradise.

Cold age deafs not there our ears

nor vapour dims our eyes:

Glory there the sun outshines

whose beams the blessed only see:

O come quickly, glorious Lord,

and raise my sprite to thee!

My soul, there is a country

My soul, there is a country,

Far beyond the stars,

Where stands a winged sentry

All skilful in the wars:

There, above noise and danger

Sweet Peace sits crowned with smiles

And One, born in a manger

Commands the beauteous files.

He is thy gracious friend

And, O my soul, awake!

Did in pure love descend

To die here for thy sake.

If thou canst get but thither,

There grows the flow'r of Peace,

The Rose that cannot wither,

Thy fortress and thy ease.

Leave then thy foolish ranges,

For none can thee secure

But One who never changes,

Thy God, thy life, thy cure.

Communio

Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine:

cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,

et lux perpetua luceat eis,

Cum Sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es.

Requiescant in pace. Amen.

May light eternal shine upon them, O Lord:

with Thy Saints for ever, for Thou art merciful.

Eternal rest give to them, O Lord:

and let perpetual light shine upon them,

With Thy Saints forever, for Thou art merciful.

May they rest in peace. Amen.

Versa est in luctum

Versa est in luctum cithara mea,

et organum meum in vocem flentium.

Parce mihi, Domine, nihil enim sunt dies mei.

My harp is turned to mourning

and my music into the voice of those that weep.

Spare me, Lord, for my days are nothing.

Elton John & Bernie Taupin - One More Arrow

He said I want to grow up

And look like Robert Mitchum

And I hope that when I'm gone

There'll be some say that I miss him.

He must have been romantic

He must have sensed adventure

And I feel the steel of his strong will

In the frame around his picture.

He could have been a boxer

But the fight game seemed so dirty

We argued once he knocked me down

And he cried when he thought he'd hurt me.

Strictly from the old school

He was quiet about his pain

And if one in ten could be that brave

I would never hate again.

Randy Newman - Texas Girl at the Funeral of her father

Here I am lost in the wind

'Round in circles sailing

Like a ship that never comes in

Standing by myself.

Here I am alone on the plain

Sun's going down

It's starting to rain

Papa, we'll go sailing

Soloist: Clare M Thomas

Soloist: Eve Borsey

And he's one more arrow flying through the air

One more arrow landing in a shady spot somewhere

Where the days and nights blend into one

And he can always feel the sun

Through the soft brown earth that holds him

Forever always young.

Libera me, Domine

Libera me, Domine,

de morte aeterna, in die illa tremenda:

Quando caeli movendi sunt et terra:

Dum veneris iudicare saeculum per ignem.

Tremens factus sum ego, et timeo,

dum discussio venerit,

atque ventura ira.

Quando caeli movendi sunt et terra.

Dies illa, dies irae, calamitatis

et miseriae,

dies magna et amara valde.

Dum veneris iudicare saeculum per ignem.

Deliver me, O Lord,

from eternal death in that awful day:

When the heavens and the earth shall be moved:

When Thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.

Dread and trembling have laid hold on me,

and I fear exceedingly because of the judgement

and the wrath to come.

When the heavens and the earth shall be shaken.

O that day, that day of wrath, sore distress,

and all wretchedness,

that great and exceeding bitter day.

When Thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.

John Ireland - Greater Love Hath No Man

Many waters cannot quench love,

neither can the floods drown it.

Love is strong as death.

Greater love hath no man than this,

that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Who his own self bare our sins

in his own body on the tree,

That we, being dead to sins,

should live unto righteousness.

Ye are washed, ye are sanctified,

ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Ye are a chosen generation,

a royal priesthood, a holy nation;

That ye should show forth the praises

of him who hath called you out of darkness

into his marvellous light.

I beseech you brethren, by the mercies of God,

that ye present your bodies, a living sacrifice,

holy, acceptable unto God,

which is your reasonable service

Michael graduated with a BA (Hons) Degree in Music

from the University of Chichester, which has

supplemented a wide range of musical studies both in

the U.K. with Terrence Allbright (Piano), Julian Cooper

(Organ) and Michael Finnissy (Composition), and

abroad, with Christopher Stembridge

(Organ/Harpsichord).

MICHAEL WHYTOCK Organist

Since working at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Michael now works for

the Civil Service, but maintains an active musical career.

He is organist of The Parish Church of St Mary of Eton, Hackney Wick and a recitalist whose

In addition to the broadcasts, concerts, special events and daily services there, Roy also sings

regularly with such groups as The King’s Consort and The Clerks, combining their various

performing, touring and recording schedules with his work as a soloist, singing teacher and

conductor.

He has conducted several choirs and ensembles, including the Goldsmiths’ Chorus, The University

of London Union Chorus, The Hanover Singers and Candlelight Opera. He is currently musical

director of three choirs: Hart Voices (Fleet, Hampshire), The Chantry Singers (Guildford, Surrey)

and his most recent project Cantorum Nicolai, an upper voices choir.

Roy has performed as a soloist with many of Britain’s leading orchestras including the City of

London Sinfonia, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the London Mozart Players. In

addition to performances in all London’s best-known concert venues, his work has taken him all

over the country and throughout Europe as well as to Israel and the States. He has appeared on

many CD recordings, film soundtracks and radio and television broadcasts, both at home and

abroad.

Recent conducting work includes performances of Stainer’s Crucifixion, Byrd’s Mass for Four

Voices, both sets of Mozart’s Vespers, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, Handel’s Coronation

Anthems, Ramirez’ Missa Criolla and Copland’s Old American Songs.

Recent singing engagements include the Tenor arias in Bach’s St John Passion at St Paul’s

Cathedral, Messiahs in Worcester and again at St Paul’s and performances in Durham and

Cardiff of Jesu Meine Freude, sung one to a part with the Clerks, as part of The Orgelbüchlein

Project (www.orgelbuechlein.co.uk).

He was language coach on a recently released CD of Mendelssohn’s version of Handel’s Israel

in Egypt, which the Guardian described as being “. . . in German”, so that’s all right then.

Roy Rashbrook was educated at Dauntsey’s School, going

on to study Music at Goldsmith’s College and Singing

under Alexander Oliver, William McAlpine and Rudolf

Piernay at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama,

London.

After a brief flirtation with a career in teaching, Roy

became a professional singer in 1998, joining the world

famous choir of Saint Paul’s Cathedral the following year;

a position which offers some precious stability in the life of

a freelance musician!

Hart Voices – in memoriam - 19 November 2016

“Why did you wave your arms about so much during our last concert? It almost looked like you

were trying to attract our attention”.

This was my first real conversation with Hugh, a valued choir member, a genuinely brilliant dentist

and a personal friend, who died at the beginning of January this year. I first met him when I took

over as the conductor of Chantry Singers in Guildford.

I must have done something right in his eyes, as after a couple of terms, he decided to give Hart

Voices a try out as well. Once he realised what a friendly and enthusiastic bunch this lot were,

there was no stopping him.

He had a very strong tenor voice, which I couldn’t help feeling might have led a great deal

further had he received the right training. As it was, he really only discovered his talent relatively

late on, but immediately set about making up for lost time. He acted in plays with local drama

groups, lent his voice to at least two choirs and produced the most sinister and scheming “King

Herod” reading in a carol service I can ever remember.

Possessed in equal measure of a hairstyle of a twenty year old and the knees of an octogenarian,

Hugh had a tough time of it health-wise. He was in almost constant pain because of his legs and

I’m sure this contributed to his occasionally somewhat irascible nature.

But he really did have a heart of gold. He would travel many miles in considerable discomfort to

get to rehearsals. He would make little wooden toys for our daughter in his workshop, and never

forgot her birthday.

When he became the family dentist, Lili would actively look forward to her check-ups with Hugh.

IN MEMORIAM Remembering

Hugh Walker 1949 - 2016

It was with great sadness that in January 2016 we

learned of the sudden death of our friend and long-

term choir colleague Hugh T Walker.

As a Tenor with Hart Voices and Chantry Singers, Hugh brought so much to both choirs and he

could count many friends among the ranks – and we shall never forget those t-shirts!

Tonight’s concert is dedicated to Hugh’s memory and we asked Musical Director, and

friend, Roy Rashbrook to share his memories of Hugh with you tonight.

Hart Voices – in memoriam - 19 November 2016

Obviously, during my appointments, he would often get me into a position where I really couldn’t

speak even if I had wanted to. Then, when my mouth was stuffed with every possible dental

gadget he could think of, he would delight in saying something musically utterly outrageous - like

“This Bach we’re singing at the moment: I really can’t see what all the fuss is all about” - knowing

that I would just have to bide my time and take it.

A last word must be said about Hugh’s T-shirts. They were invariably funny - and expressed a

message that you just knew he was dying to tell everyone, if only they would ask. One of my

favourites was the classic “Silence is Golden . . . Duct Tape is Silver”.

I’ll leave the final words to Hugh himself though.

In the summer of 2015, Hart Voices were planning to visit the Llangollen International Music

Eisteddfod, and shortly before we went, I received the following email from Hugh.

“I had a phone call today, offering me an admission date for my hip replacement. Since the hip

I have now has dislocated 6 times in the past 4 years - each time requiring an ambulance,

general anaesthetic and being grounded for 2 weeks (not to mention the pain before, during

attempts to reset it while conscious, and after) - this is exciting news.

But at the same time this is devastating, as it means that I won't be singing with you at Llangollen,

nor will I be able to get to Fleet to rehearse for the December performances. The family-plan is

for us to move closer to the kids, so it may be that I never get to sing with Hart Voices again.

So, thank you for having me. It has been a wonderful experience, you are a lovely choir - but I

do wish you'd moved your rehearsal venue nearer to Guildford. I did ask...!

I'm not good on goodbyes so I'd better go now.

Iechyd da

Hugh Walker

PS: I found the perfect T-Shirt, on a website

recently. It says, "I think you'll find it's a bit more

complicated than that."

Roy Rashbrook, November 2016

"The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face shine upon you,

And be gracious to you.

The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,

And give you peace."

Rest in Peace Hugh.

Hart Voices is a mixed voice choir based in Fleet, Hampshire which achieves a high-standard of singing from a

non-auditioned choir. We perform four concerts each year across three terms running from September to July.

Our programme varies from stunning major choral works to satisfying chamber music programmes and the

occasional light programme of popular numbers!

Singers are drawn not only from Fleet and the surrounding area, but also outlying towns including Guildford and

Basingstoke. Choir membership is currently around 50 voices, many of whom have sung with the choir for several

years. The combined experience and enthusiasm enables us to explore new musical horizons - both in repertoire

and venue.

We aim to broaden our experience, strive for quality and musicality in our performances and involve young singers

wherever possible. Soloists are drawn from the choir, although for more complex works we often invite

professional singers to participate.

Our collective enthusiasm for music makes us a very sociable choir and we also make an effort to have regular

trips away; previous trips have included Hungary, Lithuania, Belgium, Llangollen (Wales), Barnstaple, Glasgow and

Ayrshire.

Singing has always been a part of my life; my first solo was As

they offered gifts most rare at junior school, aged nine, in a

school assembly. From there, I belonged to Church choir,

school choirs and then stage productions followed.

I studied at London University - balancing Physics with singing in College choirs and, among

other things, Christian Union and sport. After graduation, I found myself working (and singing) in

the south-west of England, then Leicester and Bristol. My first experience of Opera was

performing in Monteverdi’s Coronation of Poppea: that was a particular highlight for me.

In 1987, I moved to the Farnborough area where I confess to singing Gilbert and Sullivan with

various local societies, among other things mea culpa…

I did occasionally do some work in amongst all this singing, enjoying a long career of some 40

years, working for tech and IT companies.

As an adult, I was somewhat conflicted as to my voice type. Singing tenor, which I did for too

many years, was always a strain. If there is a moral to my tale, it would be to recognize early

what your true voice type is.

It took me until my late 40’s to accept that I was never going to be able to sing those high notes.

Things went much better after that and I sang a number of baritone roles.

I feel that there are two generations of men who have been lost to amateur classical singing,

from the 1970’s onwards. I did have a break for a number of years myself, however ten years on,

wafted by a favouring gale, I dipped my toe in the water again last year and am now very

much enjoying my singing again, looking forward to the adventure that is yet to come.

And in Hart Voices, I think I have found my new singing home.

What Choir Means to Me

Choir Members tell us about how important

being a part of the choir is to them.

This month, we hear from Laurence Welch

New Choir Member Voice Part: Bass 2

Hart Voices – in memoriam - 19 November 2016

For the Fallen Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) published in The Times on 21st September 1914.

With proud thanksgiving,

a mother for her children,

England mourns

for her dead

across the sea.

Flesh of her flesh

they were,

spirit of her spirit,

Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill;

Death august and royal

Sings sorrow up

into immortal spheres,

There is music

in the midst of desolation

And a glory that shines

upon our tears.

They went

with songs to the battle,

they were young,

Straight of limb,

true of eye,

steady and aglow.

They were staunch

to the end

against odds uncounted;

They fell

with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old,

as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them,

nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun

and in the morning

We will remember them.

They mingle not

with their laughing comrades again;

They sit no more

at familiar tables of home;

They have no lot in our labour

of the day-time;

They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are

and our hopes profound,

Felt as a well-spring

that is hidden from sight,

To the innermost heart

of their own land they are known

As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright

when we are dust,

Moving in marches

upon the heavenly plain;

As the stars that are starry

in the time of our darkness,

To the end, to the end,

they remain.
