M OOver the past decade, Viparis has been on the move.
We are also building flexibility into our infrastructures,
our technical solutions and our services. Our Guest
Attitude policy focuses on improving the welcome
we provide, and our Re-invent Facility Management
and ViparisStore initiatives are aimed at improving
exhibitor services. Finally, we are constantly perfecting
the support we provide to every organiser seeking
to plan a successful event in Paris. From its original
role as a property manager, Viparis has evolved to
become a service platform and an advocate for Paris
– our French Event Booster innovation platform and
the Paris Leaders Club are flagship examples of this.
At a time when the prospect of the 2024 Olympic
Games has created an exciting momentum for Paris,
Viparis is transforming itself with its customers in mind,
through significant real estate investments, new inno-
vative services and a sustainable vision via its Better
Events 2030 initiative.

I NEvents, by their very nature, are all about forward
motion. It almost goes without saying that the events
industry embodies the very spirit of this forward
motion in an era of constant transformation.
As a reflection of this, the very DNA of events is
also changing – boundaries between the digital
and the physical worlds are vanishing, much like
those between sectors.
To adapt to this changing environment, for Viparis –
which operates Paris’s major event venues – flexibil-
ity has become our watchword. Flexibility in terms of
the spaces we offer to event organisers in Paris: halls,
pavilions and other destinations, but also flexibility in
value-added services for our guests, such as shops,
restaurants and hotels. As a symbol of this new era,
Paris Convention Centre is now firmly established on
the international events scene, ready to respond to
new challenges. Located in the heart of the capital,
the Centre allows our guests to discover Paris like
a real Parisian, even for those attending the very
largest events.

Paris is constantly consolidating its position as one of the world’s top
destinations for major events. To help the city maintain its leading status,
Viparis is reinventing both its venues and its range of services.

According to the latest report by the International
Convention and Congress Association* (ICCA),
Paris remains one of the most popular international
congress destinations in the world, with a record
year in 2017 in terms of attendance. Congress
attendees represented 8% of the business tourism
market** and accounted for more than two million
overnight stays.
* The ICCA’s annual ranking of congress destinations, which was
published on 7 May 2018, uses three criteria to determine eligibility:
congresses must be held on a regular basis, have a minimum of
50 participants, and rotate between at least three different countries.

On 5 October 2018 in Bremen, it was revealed that,
in 2021, Paris Convention Centre would host the
72nd edition of the International Astronautical Congress,
a prestigious gathering of scientists, academics, engineers
and international space leaders. This joint victory – an
effort shared by France’s National Centre for Space
Studies (CNES), the City of Paris and Viparis – coincides
with the 60th anniversary of the CNES’s founding.

By hosting the Associations & Conference Forum in January 2018, Paris bolstered its position
as a key city for congresses. The Forum, which consists of some thirty European associations,
all of them congress organisation leaders, chose Paris for their annual meeting.
The programme consisted of three days of visits as well as a general assembly, educational plenary sessions and discoveries of Paris’s
tourist attractions. All the participants, including the Paris Convention and Visitors
Bureau and Parisian hotel chains, helped make the event a resounding success.
Huawei chose Paris for the world launch
of its new P20 smartphone series. The event
took place on 27 March at the Hôtel Salomon
de Rothschild, allowing a hand-picked group
of 335 journalists, bloggers and influencers
from all over Europe to discover the many
features of this new smartphone.

After an outstanding renovation by Viparis the dazzling Palais des Congrès d’Issy, a jewel of Art Deco architecture,
can shine once more. With its stained glass windows and 3,000 m2 of fully modular spaces, this one-of-a-kind
venue combines the charm of 1930s Paris with innovative services and
a resolutely contemporary welcome.
It might seem difficult to attract trendy crowds
to the roof of a car park, but Viparis did just that.
Teaming up with Passage Piéton, we created
the Hanging Gardens, the largest green rooftop
in the capital, which opened in summer 2018.
This inspiring and out-of-the-ordinary
popup venue of 3,500 m2 drew a total of
160,000 visitors and established itself
as a unique backdrop for corporate events.
Viparis invited its customers to a special late
summer cocktail reception at Espace Champerret, in
partnership with the sports company La Boulisterie
and local service providers. This was an opportunity
to explore a versatile venue in the course of
a friendly, relaxed evening, where the central plaza
served as an impromptu petanque court.
Viparis employees came together with their business
partners for two hugely successful open house days
at Palais des Congrès d’Issy (February) and
Espace Grande Arche (June). Prospects, customers
and agencies were invited to discover (or rediscover)
the renovation efforts, offers and innovations at these
two venues, which epitomise Viparis’s transformation.

IMPROVING THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
TO MAKE IT UNFORGETTABLEBY ST É P H A N I E B O N N E L A N D T H O M AS L E ST R A D E
“The customer experience is a key priority for Viparis,
which involves every one of our employees.
It is best defined as a chain of successful interactions
with our customers – either directly (via our teams)
or indirectly (online tools, partners, etc.). To improve
the customer experience, we have hired a customer
relations manager, introduced turnkey offers at certain
venues and trained our teams to handle customer
requests in the best possible manner, reducing
the number of contact persons and returning calls
within 24 hours.”
“As part of the 43rd edition of the Entretiens
de Podologie, we were keen to change to a new
location to make the event more accessible and raise
its visibility. Viparis met with us to help us organise
the event at Espace Champerret. As preparations
advanced, we could depend on Viparis’s expertise
in listening, anticipating our needs and responding
quickly. This successful collaboration led to
our decision to return in 2019.”

FOR BOOSTING
THE EVENTECH
New challenges in the industry
are forcing event management
professionals to rethink
their practices. In addition
to providing incubation space,
French Event Booster wants
to become the meeting place
for event innovation.
FRENCH EVENT BOOSTER
THE FIRST EVENT
INNOVATION PLATFORM
In September 2018, Viparis,
LÉVÉNEMENT, Novelty/Magnum
and WeYou, together with OPENevents
and Unimev, inaugurated French
Event Booster, the events management
industry’s first innovation platform.
Located at Paris Expo Porte de
Versailles, French Event Booster serves
as an incubator for start-ups that are
redesigning the visitor experience.
It also features a coworking space
and LéCOLE, a training programme
for event professionals.

The eleven start-ups that were
selected to join French Event

to helping companies expand
and gain market access, French
Event Booster provides them
with a unique testing ground where
they can fine-tune and implement
their ideas: Paris Expo Porte

HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF MADAMEPEE?
madame Pee’s ambition is to become the leader in urinals for women
at any type of event location, and in any kind of space. So, French Event Booster
is a great way for us to create business opportunities more quickly. In 2019,
madamePee urinals will be deployed in France, followed by an international
deployment in 2020. The organizers of several major events at Paris Expo Porte de
Versailles have already shown interest, and we are ready for an experiment!
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO JOIN FRENCH EVENT BOOSTER?
I was searching for an incubator to help with the development of madamePee.
I chose French Event Booster because it had everything I needed.
In my view, it is a critically important incubator because it is focused on my target
audience, the events market. The workspace is beautiful, practical and spacious:
the various teams really appreciate it, as do customers and partners, and it’s
also a big plus for recruiting. The platform’s managers provide me with excellent support.
Finally, it was the location within Paris Expo Porte de Versailles that convinced
me – an iconic address as close as possible to where events are taking place!
What is MadamePee?madamePee is a start-up that was launched in September 2017. We design, manufacture and market the first urinals intended uniquely for women, with an eye to shortening queues for women’s toilets at high-traffic events and places.

WELCOME PACK
RECIPIENTS IN 2018
Viparis and its partners – the Ile-de-France Regional Tourism Committee
and Paris Aéroport – are constantly working to improve the Welcome
Pack. One feature we have added is greeters. Greeters serve as “guardian
angels”: on-the-ground intermediaries between the event organiser and all of the various stakeholders. They ensure
high-quality service and a quicker response to customer requests.
The Welcome Pack is a comprehensive
offer of reception services, complementary
shuttle transfers and other amenities
provided to visitors, exhibitors and conference
attendees. It starts from their arrival
in the Greater Paris region and continues
throughout the events they are attending.

Viparis has redesigned its food service, providing high street brands
and specially-designed concepts at its venues. The result: up-to-date offerings in friendly, contemporary
settings that are in line with new consumer preferences. These include
“food boxes”, pop-up food outlets that serve up a range of culinary concepts,
and Le Cercle, a contemporary restaurant with a pop aesthetic.
At Paris Nord Villepinte, Chez Jean, a convenience store designed
by Casino and Relay, offers both groceries and a dining area.

RETHINKING ORGANISER AND EXHIBITOR EXPERIENCES
In 2018, we completed building work at all
our venues to improve the visitor experience,
and began to update the services
we provide to organisers and exhibitors.
Brand-new turnkey solutions have been
introduced for organisers who need
streamlined, comprehensive support.
When it comes to innovation, the Viper
application, currently in its test phase
at certain venues, provides real-time
monitoring of how quickly malfunctions,
reported by exhibitors, are resolved.

YOUR SERVICE POLICY?
Viper is not new – it was already in use as
a real-time monitoring and maintenance tool.
We provide our customers with data to foster
transparency and facilitate immediate

providing “the best service per square meter”.
WHAT IS THE CONCRETE EXPRESSION
OF GUEST ATTITUDE AT VIPARIS?
First and foremost, it is expressed through
our corporate culture, as exemplified
by our teams every day. This is achieved
through their presence and their commitment
to welcoming visitors and customers on-site.
Guest Attitude also involves investing
in infrastructure and technology.

New urban practicesThe urban experience is changing, and so are our venues. More mixed uses,
greater flexibility, a more open feel and greener surroundings are key priorities

Viparis is taking part in the renewal of southwest Paris through its
participation in the Mixcité project (2021–2024). The goal
of Mixcité is to streamline traffic flows, forge ties with neighbouring
urban areas, increase the number of green spaces and combine
complementary activities. Two new structures will be built by the end
of 2024, including hotels.

THE TRANSFORMATION CONTINUES
The second phase of Paris Expo Porte
de Versailles’s transformation will set the stage
for the complex’s future. This phase will
include the new Pavilion 6 with its
Jean Nouvel-designed awning, rebuilt
and redesigned car parks, and the creation
of an eco-neighbourhood and hotel
accommodation directly inside the complex.
All of these will profoundly enhance the visitor
experience. The new phase was launched
in 2018 – the old Pavilions 6 and 8
were demolished and new foundations laid,
a new car park was built and work started
on the hotel complex.
Reinventing “Paris beneath your feet”
DANIEL BUREN AT PARIS LA DÉFENSE
Viparis’s “Peace & Log” project was the winner of the 2nd edition
of the “Reinventing Paris” competition. Peace & Log will alleviate vehicle
traffic and improve the quality of life in the surrounding district, as well as promote urban agriculture. In 2021,
the site – a former service station – will offer local residents a food cooperative
selling Parisian agricultural products – part of the produce offered
for sale will come from the world’s largest urban rooftop farm located
atop the future Pavilion 6 at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles.

HOW WILL THE MIXCITÉ PROJECT ADDRESS THESE NEW CHALLENGES?
The Mixcité concept reflects these principles: the creation of a new centrality
by establishing a multifunctional base. For example, shops on a new square facing
existing buildings, with a possible connection to the upper levels of exhibition halls,
thus creating a “high line” extending from terrace to terrace with a view across the city,
an original architectural design created solely for this space, a club-terrace
at the top of the building open to the public with a vista of Paris.
WHAT IS YOUR VISION OF THE CITY OF TOMORROW?
The city of tomorrow – particularly metropolitan areas such as Paris – must embrace a global
approach, in line with the increasing urbanisation of the world. However, a local approach
is also critical, one that expresses a place’s unique identity; this gives rise to new centres,
bridging urban functions that allow us to live and work in the same place.
New districts, planned in urban design workshops, will respond to our desire to “live together
in harmony”. The city of tomorrow will be structured around robust urban centres that provide
a backbone for peri-urban areas, whose density can be increased without the need
for ill-conceived urban expansion to the detriment of its inhabitants.
“Urban design is a new approach that combines urban planning and architecture. Our hotel project for Viparis at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles site is a perfect example of this. It is not just about adding one more building to this complex, but rather designing a hotel that is both formal and functional, as well as being integrated into the exhibition complex and the city of Issy-les-Moulineaux, for everyone’s mutual benefit.”

de Rothschild. The show was an immense success, with 37,000 visitors between 14 July
and 21 August 2018. The second exhibition, “Ship’s Cat” featured towering sculptures
of cats and Japanese washi paper structures, whose elegant presence graced the Salles du Carrousel Lobby and Espace Soufflot
during August 2018. The show drew 22,000 visitors in a single week.

Head of Exhibitions at the Maison de la culture du Japon in Paris
“Integrating innovative event formats at our venues is very important for the future, because it has the potential to attract new audiences. This means we must adapt – for example by welcoming museum-curated events which involve another level of conceptual creativity.”
“The Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild’s classic French architecture blended perfectly with the exhibition’s universe, which depicted the history and diversity of Japanese aesthetics. This reflects the future of this type of event, by which, through innovative exhibition design, the centrality of the works and their messages are given centre stage.”

of a Heliatek flexible, ultra-light organic

means that a building’s structure

EMPLOYEE INVOLVEMENT
In 2018, Viparis employees were
involved in seven projects with
non-profit organisations. For example,
Palais des Congrès de Paris,
which partners with the association
Le Défi d’Orphée, provided tickets for
sixteen children to see a performance
of II était une fois Broadway. The
partnership promotes access to culture,
particularly via free concerts for
children, funding for orchestra,
theatre and choir lessons, and loans
of musical instruments.
VIPARIS, SPONSORING PARTNER
OF THE FONDATION PALLADIO
Since its creation in 2008, the Fondation
Palladio’s mission has been to make
cities more humane, more liveable,
more inclusive – places that create
value. In 2018, Viparis was involved
in the organisation’s Pôle Avenir
(Future Centre): as part of a sponsorship
in kind agreement, Viparis offered
to host the 7th edition of the Forum
des Métiers de l’Immobilier et de la Ville
at Palais des Congrès in Paris.

Emmanuelle Coratti
Director of Sustainable Development, GL Events
“Although the events sector has been working for years
to improve its practices with respect to the circular economy,
the situation has reached a tipping point. Stakeholders are feeling
increasingly pressured to find efficient solutions that focus
on reducing, reusing and recycling materials and products.
The idea is to no longer generate waste but to transform it into
new resources! Viparis has taken up this challenge in a concrete
way. Several experiments were carried out at the initiative
of a working group of service providers and event organisers.
The goal is to get our stakeholders involved, raising their awareness
and working with them to find shared sustainable solutions.”
Catherine Phin
Sustainable Development Manager, Viparis {
“Expanding recycling and reuse efforts, eco-designing
new offers, optimising energy consumption and greenhouse
gas emissions – these are collective challenges that we
address in project mode with the purchasing, marketing,
operations, sales and logistics teams and in collaboration
with all our stakeholders. At the Première Vision event,
for example, a new waste sorting system was deployed
in conjunction with Viparis. Recycling of brushed cotton
carpeting, the collection of recyclable waste, dedicated
waste management teams: these are all time-tested actions
that are defining new operational methods that have less
impact on the environment.”{
