THE ROSARY – A PRAYER FOR ALL SEASONS

The Rosary has been one of the most popular devotions among Catholics worldwide for many years. A commonly held belief is that St. Dominic received

the rosary during an apparition in the 13th century. He

and his followers promulgated the prayer down through the centuries.

When Mary appeared to the three children in Fatima at the turn of the last century, she identified herself as the Lady of the Rosary. She impressed on the children how important it was to pray the rosary

daily for world peace. From that time on praying the rosary has become a very important part of Catholic Devotion.

In the introduction to his Apostolic Letter on the Rosary written in 2002, Pope John Paul II emphasizes that though we pray for Mary’s intercession, the rosary is truly about Jesus. It is “at heart a Christo-centric

prayer” that can be seen as a short summary of the Gospel. We pray to Jesus in the company of His mother .

With Mary, we contemplate the mysteries of the life He shared with her. Even in the words of the Hail Mary itself – it is Christ who is the ultimate object of

both the angel’s announcement and the greeting of the mother of John the Baptist: “Blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Mary lived with her eyes fixed on Christ. The memories of Jesus impressed upon her heart were always with her – leading her to reflect on the various moments of life at her son’s side. In a way these

memories were to be the “rosary” which she recited uninterruptedly throughout her earthly life. In the recitation of the Rosary, we enter into contact with the memories and reflections of Mary. Contemplating the scenes of the rosary in union with Mary is a means of learning from her - the message of

Jesus’ life. As we reflect on each mystery, Mary calls

us to be receptive to God’s Word, to ponder it in our hearts and to act on it in our everyday lives.

During this month of October devoted to the Holy Rosary, let us then renew our devotion to Christ by praying the rosary with His loving Mother.

Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Chris
