SDCCS Board News June 2004

Jacob’s Thoughts on Democracy I'm thinking a lot about democracy these days. Teachers are busy making decisions about next year. The board and the PSA are holding elections. Committees are busy making plans for things like next year's budget and writing new school policies. New teacher candidates are busy preparing for their upcoming interviews. The courts are busy trying to decide the constitutionality of God and the Pledge of Allegiance and I am busy reflecting on how all of this affects my classroom and me. The state Social Studies standards say that I am to teach my first graders about democracy and patriotism. a. Students describe the rights

and individual responsibilities of citizenship.

b. Students know and understand the symbols, icons, and traditions of the United States that provide continuity and a sense of community across time.

Monday was Flag Day. On Monday we sang patriotic songs. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance. I made copies of the flag for my students to color. I made copies of the Pledge for my students to take home. We read stories about our country. I was feeling very patriotic and dutiful.

Then I had a student ask, "Do I have to take one of these home?" "No. Why?" I answered.

"I don’t believe in God and don't want one," she replied. My first thought was, "How cool of her to know her own mind like that." I can't imagine being able to speak for myself so confidently at her age. I thought about how other teachers might have handled that situation. Would the parents have been called? I can only imagine. What did I do? I smiled and told her that it was fine if she didn't bring one home. After all, it's her choice. My job is to provide the lessons, not the outcomes. Our life at this cooperative charter school is based on the ideals of democracy. We are given a voice and the right to express our ideas, opinions, and beliefs but this does not guarantee that they will be acted upon. I believe democracy can facilitate freedoms but it also requires responsibility. As parents, you have the responsibility and the freedom to choose which school your child attends. As teachers we have the responsibility to teach the lessons the state has chosen for us, but we have the freedom at this school to do so in a manner that suits our individual teaching styles as well as the individual learning styles of our students. As a new teacher liaison to the PSA for next year, I urge you to become involved. If your opinion is not quite the popular one, that's okay. Not everyone wants to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Our differences make for interesting conversations. We should not be afraid to disagree, while remembering that we want to be models of respectful communication for our children and others in our community. Please find a place to participate. Exercise your democratic right to continue creating the kind of school we can all be patriotically proud of.

Treasurer’s Report The Budget Committee met to create a 5-year budget projection. Several teachers attended since we also talked about how much money was available for staff salaries. We have been fortunate to have received several grants and a loan this year. Without those funding sources – we almost break even this year. We need to spend $100,000 to build out the classroom for the 7th and 8th grades. The grants help us do that and maintain a positive cash flow. The good news is that once we have the additional students, we will have more money next year – and we won’t have the build out expense – so we should be operating in the black! That being said, the Board talked about ways to increase the salaries and benefits of staff to bring them in line with other teachers in public schools. Randy was asked to come back with a proposal to the next Board meeting to explain what he thinks are comparable salaries and benefits. A small but successful SDCCS fundraiser was held on May 30th. Some school families sold refreshments during the intermission of a play in Hillcrest. We raised just over $100 dollars and could not have done it without the generous donations of home baked desserts from SDCCS families. A special thanks to school parent Audrey Gwinn and school aunt Laura Partido! $100 seems like a small amount of money...but just think, if every family helped the school to raise $100 during the year... how many wonderful things we could do for our teachers and our kids!

Boxtop Madness A big Thank You! to Miss Annetta's Kindergarten class for helping to count and bundle this year's batch of Boxtops into groups of 10. As a result, SDCCS earned $170! this year. Thanks to all of you who sent in their Boxtops. Keep clipping and saving them over the summer!

The program works in this way:

1. Clip Boxtops from General Mills products. The most common are cereals, yogurt, baking mixes, and frozen foods. Some examples are Cascadian Farms, Betty Crocker, and Pillsbury.

2. Send these Boxtops to your child's class or to the office. There is a collection container in class.

3. Our school earns 10 cents for each Boxtop.

4. The money earned goes to the PSA to be used for enrichment programs at our school.

Any questions, please contact Joan Rotter at [email protected] or (619) 424-5976.

Over the Summer Here are some ideas to help out the school over the summer:

1. Continue to collect Boxtops for Education

2. Sign up for E-scrip on-line at

www.escrip.com and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Register your Macy’s card too!

3. Update your subscription on the school web page at www.sdccs.org

4. Help your teacher get their classroom ready in August

5. Volunteer to help on the 7th grade build-out

San Diego County Fair Thinking of going to the Fair? Check out the attached Frugal Fair guide for hints. The best one is that you get a free Legoland ticket with every kid’s meal! Also – be sure and check out the collection displays (2nd floor by the quilts). Sure, there are the usually things like matchbooks, marbles and hotel keys. But it’s the strange things that are really great. In past years, people have calculated how much toilet paper they used during a year (complete with a timeline showing which relatives where visiting when). This year, there is an outstanding collection of charm bracelets. Also, OJ Simpson trial memorabilia, a collection of unsolicited credit card offers and a water bottle collection. The best is a kid that picked up change off the ground for a year (and saved up $52!). Could this be a potential SDCCS projects in the Fall!? Plus, everyone that enters the contest gets free admission to the Fair.

Dear SDCCS,

This is my son’s last year at SDCCS. As I have stated verbally to all who would listen, these last two years have been the best, most enriching of his academic life. I would like the staff, administration and the SDCCS families to know how grateful we feel.

I can’t begin to tell you how my son has flourished at this school. He has been nurtured, respected and supported every moment he has attended. All of this has been icing on the cake as I have seen him demonstrate what he has learned at this school in his daily life. His education has truly been integrated into who he is. That was your mission and it has been accomplished.

I have been amazed at every teacher at this school, yet I would like to give a special, most heart felt thanks to CJ Hawk, Merrill DeGraff, and Matt Saggesse. You are great teachers. You have made a profound difference in my son’s life and you have taught him well. Thank you so very much.

Sincerely, Debra Magallanes
