THE WATERLOO COMMUNITY SOLICITORS

This year will see the largest ever Thames Festival over the weekend of the 18 and 19 September with events for the first time all along the SE1 riverfront from the South Bank to the Pool of London.

There will be entertainment including Samba dancers in Potters Fields and theatre and music in The Scoop alongside City Hall. Other music venues are the riverside at HMS Belfast and Jubilee Gardens.

This year’s highlights include a walk led by playwright John Constable from Southwark’s tourist information centre at Vinopolis at 4.30pm on Saturday.

On Saturday evening from 8pm there

will be another experimental Firing on the Foreshore when objects made with Thames clay will be placed in a beach fire outside the Globe. Meanwhile Steve Hollingshead’s river photos and historic pictures will be projected on a wall. In the morning, after the Thames has risen – extinguishing the fire – and fallen back, the fired items will be retrieved.

On Sunday the Night Carnival procession arrives in SE1 from Blackfriars Bridge at 7.30pm and will have 2500 participants. A special feature will be Spanish Sarruga with a Catalan street performance involving sculptures of giant insects and underwater creatures made of heavy duty wrapping paper, internally lit and then manipulated. They will be joined by Shademakers from

Germany and Toca Rufar from Portugal with shark, tyrannosaurus, peacock and dragon costumes and the drumming rhythms.

Afterwards at 10pm Christophe Berthonneau’s Groupe F just back from providing the Olympic fireworks will stage a display on the river opposite the Oxo Tower.

During both days there will be a vibrant Riverside Bazaar from 12 noon to 10pm between the London Eye and the Oxo Tower. Food stalls, wine bars, cocktail bar, international beer stall, funfair rides and festival crafts stalls will line the riverside.

Also new this year is the decorating of Hungerford Bridge with 500 flags. •www.thamesfestival.org

David Page, chairman of Real Greek owners Clapham House Group, has lost his bet that the new Bankside restaurant would not take £50,000 a week before Christmas. He rashly promised to run across Tower Bridge naked if he was wrong. The packed terrace at the Real Greek’s Souvlaki & Bar alongside Bear Gardens indicated good trade in July. Last month whilst on holiday Page was informed that he has lost the bet.

His City colleagues have been offering helpful suggestions including

running naked inside a van which could be driven over the Thames. After contemplating the price of his venture’s succcess he is now considering hiring the Tower Bridge walkways and doing a quick dash above ground. If guests are present the plan is to wear a sandwich board and even stage a simultaneous cabaret as a diversion.

However Real Greek founder Theodore Kyriakou will not be there. “A bet is a bet but I will be taking a holiday to avoid the display” he says diplomatically.

SOUTH BANK FORUMThe next South Bank Forum is to be held in October. The last meeting of the Forum, held at King’s College in Stamford Street, was as long ago as last March. The June meeting was cancelled due to the Euro 2004 and now the September meeting has had to be postponed. The October agenda is expected to include a Jubilee gardens update.

MOVIE NEWSTrauma, a new film starring Colin Firth, is released on Friday 17 Setptember. Filming took place last year in Lower Marsh and Great Suffolk Street. Firth stars in the new Bridget Jones film, also shot in SE1, which is released in November. Meanwhile Channel 4’s transatlantic drama NY-LON also features many SE1 locations.

Famous and Infamous Londoners

PETER de Loriol has found several interesting characters male and female to include in his book Famous and Infamous Londoners (Sutton £12.99) which is full of surprises. He reminds us that the original Sir John Falstaff, although not large and jolly as Shakespeare suggested, lived in Tooley Street which is a short distance from the Globe where he was portrayed. Nearby was the rival Hope Theatre in Bear Gardens run by Edward Alleyn who attracted the first tourists to the area.

The author has a timely reminder that Holland Street, on the west side of Tate Modern and now a focus of developers’ dreams, is named after Elizabeth Holland. She was “Queen of Vice in Southwark” and during Elizabeth I’s reign maintained a moated brothel on the approximate site of Bankside 4.

Also featured is Captain Bligh who lived in Lambeth Road and receives a fair assessment. A contemporary was Hester Thrale who then was described as “the only pretty girl who would consent to live in Southwark”.

A STATUE of Diana, Princess of Wales could be installed on the South Bank. The 10ft bronze statue is likely to be placed in Forum Magnum Square behind County Hall.

The statue shows the princess in a simple floor-length evening gown – devoid of jewellery – and wearing a broad smile.

Sculptor Nigel Boonham said it had taken a year to create the model and would take another 12 months to complete the real artwork. Boonham’s other work includes a statue of Cardinal Basil Hume in Newcastle

The work has been commissioned by lawyer Jonathan Stone who predicted problems with the memorial fountain.

The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund has its offices in County Hall.

THE RECENTLY vacated bonded wine warehouse under London Bridge Station is to open as The Shunt Vaults Theatre. A collective of ten diverse artists who have been working together for over 5 years are staging their ‘live event’ Tropicana this autumn.

Previews are being held this month with the support of the National Theatre. However, the audience is asked to wear clothes suitable for dusty conditions and be ready to move about

the vast 70,000 square foot space.

The Shunt company works largely site specifically incorporating theatre, dance, visual art, sound, video and circus and the shows often have an experiential quality which is part of an ongoing examination of the role of an audience.

Such is the unusual experience that those arriving late will not be admitted. •www.shunt.co.uk•See listings on page 4.

A 32-STOREY building is planned for Blackfriars Road on a site alongside Christ Church.

The surprise move comes from Land Securities who have bought the former Sainsbury’s headquarters in Paris Gardens. The site embraces the buildings on the corner of Blackfriars Road and Stamford Street.

The skyscraper would replace a row of buildings which include the Paper Moon pub and a betting shop. If plans are approved the church will have three new buildings on two sides of its

churchyard. Meanwhile Land

Securities, which is also developing the St Christopher House site in Southwark Street, is facing opposition to its plan for a building higher than the controversial ‘Tate Tower’ behind Hopton’s Almshouses.

The Blackfriars Road building is the highest so far proposed in the area. Several church officials and tenants of the church building have expressed surprise and concern on returning from holidays to hear the news.•www.landsecurities.com

IT’S BEEN a South Bank institution for decades, but the skateboarding arena in the Queen Elizabeth Hall undercroft has finally been recognised by the South Bank Centre management.

The centre has installed five ‘skateable sculptures’ designed by artists and skateboarders as part of a

collaboration with London collective The Side Effects of Urethane.

The space on the riverside underneath the Queen Elizabeth Hall has been the unofficial home of UK skateboarding since the 1970s, and the SBC says these new sculptures signal the latest stage in the

centre’s growing relationship with some of the most regular visitors to the site. “The synergy between skateboarding, art, dance and music is obvious and these young people are keen to get involved with our artistic programme as well as our public spaces,” says chief executive Michael Lynch.

Saturday 11 SeptemberDISCOVERING SAUL BASS AT THE NFT£35 (lunch included) only from Design Museum: 020 7940 8782.The National Film Theatre, in collaboration with the Design Museum, is celebrating the work of the iconoclastic graphic designer Saul Bass. This day offers the opportunity to survey his extensive body of work that includes collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese and Otto Preminger. Before Bass, film titles served a functional purpose, outlining the film’s cast and crew. In 1956 he completely re-energised the format in Preminger’s controversial drugs movie, The Man with the Golden Arm. Saul Bass created over 50 title sequences and revolutionised the cinema-going experience. The day starts at the Design Museum with a curatorial tour of the Saul Bass exhibition in the morning, followed by an in-depth look at Bass’s film title designs on screen at the NFT in the afternoon. It will conclude with a screening of Hitchock’s Vertigo, featuring one of Bass’ most iconic title sequences.

SACKED from his day job and in risk of losing another; deteriorating college grades and losing the girl of your dreams - surely life couldn’t get much worse for Peter Parker?

Two years have passed since Peter (Tobey Maguire) made the ultimate sacrifice to walk away from his beloved Mary Jane/M.J (Kirsten Dunst) and the challenges that face Peter are greater than ever. He begins to wonder if the gift of his superpowers is really worth the sacrifice and emotional pain. When the experiments of well-intentioned Dr Octavius (Alfred Molina) go wrong, an ogre in the form of ‘Dr. Octopus’ is unleashed to terrorise the metropolis. It’s up to Peter to save the city. Spectacular and thrilling encounters together with equally stunning cinematography make this a film you do not want to miss. Nor would you want to miss the IMAX experience and the larger than life images and sounds that serve to enhance the film.•See listing on this page

STATIONERY buffs can have a field day at Tab Business Machines at 2/3 London Road. An unprepossessing shop front hides an amazing variety of stationery of every description – pens, paper, folders, student notebooks and computer consumables and ink cartridges. They also sell computers and printers and print and bind material. The shop sells 20,000 products, some of which you can order from their 927 page catalogue. It’s not surprising that the shop, which has been at its present site for 14 years, seems to be full to bursting. Once it was at the Elephant and Castle and supplied stationery to the Labour Party in Walworth Road. Indeed inside is a photo of Tony Blair with the two partners Vimal Patel and Nitin Changela taken at a sports day before Blair became Prime Minister. Mr Patel also remembers John Major lunching at Pizzeria Castello at the Elephant before he was Prime Minister. How times have changed! ANNE CRITCHLEY

United St Saviour’s Charity is a Southwark charity which provides sheltered housing to elderly people in need, and gives grants to local voluntary groups for the relief of poverty. The Charity is governed by a board of trustees. We are seeking to appoint 3 new trustees. Trustees meet monthly, and are unpaid, but find their role is both fun and rewarding, especially when they meet with residents of the sheltered housing scheme.

Trustees must reside in the Parliamentary constituency of Southwark and Bermondsey or close by. Applications from women and members of minority ethnic communities are especially welcome.

For further information, please contact Cristina O’Halloran on 020 7407 5961.

OzuBelvedere Road

HOPEFULLY Ozu will prove the old adage that the third time is the charm. It certainly deserves it. Ozu is the best Japanese restaurant in London but, if location is everything, Ozu is doomed: the previous two ventures on this site were dismal failures- the soccer museum and a pleasant coffee bar. Linked to the Marriot Hotel, County Hall, Ozu is directly opposite St Thomas’.

Ozu has some top class sushi and sashimi (raw fish). We took a teenage guest to dine with us, whose experience of ‘Japanese’ eateries stopped at Yo Sushi and Wagamama, and she was ‘blown away’. The young, female French maitre d’ talked her through the menu in non-patronising and comprehensible terms.

Ozu is not cheap: a Saturday evening meal for three, liberally lubricated with wine and saki, cost £120. But I have also sampled and can highly recommend the excellent value lunchtime Bento boxes (salad, miso soup, pickles, steamed rice, a chef ’s special, such as chicken teriyaki or deep fried pork fillet, plus a fruit selection) at £10-14/head.

I fear Ozu is ahead of its time. You have to try it in case it disappears.•County Hall, Belvedere Road•T 020 7928 7766
