WELLNESS

Niloofar’s Weekly Wellness Tip

Life moves on, with or without your acceptance. If there were an Olympic event in "Holding On" I'd be a multiple gold medalist. I'm nostalgic by nature, and tend to reminisce a lot about days gone by or "how things used to be." Letting Go is probably the hardest principle to put into practice, for many reasons. Often we feel that by holding on we're actually controlling things. Or we believe that if we let go things would only get worse. Some think that it's dishonoring or disrespecting the past to do so. Or others may think that the pain in letting go is just too great to bear and that we wouldn't be able to handle it, so better to keep the past alive inside of us than feel the "ending". But the truth is, ironically, the more you hold on, the more pain you cause yourself, the more you dissociate from life, and the more of a self-fulfilling prophecy it becomes (the future is NOT bright, because you're stuck in the past...the thing you're holding on to DOES die, because you didn't allow it to evolve and grow...maybe even into something better...etc.) So today, remind yourself that letting go is a good thing, and that change happens whether you choose it or not. So better to flow with it than be dragged, kicking and screaming! Your new chapter awaits!!! Start today!!! (And don’t forget that if you’re struggling in any regard that you can always email me for a one-on-one wellness coaching session) ~Niloofar [email protected]

Things to do in KC This Week

Things to Do in KC This Week (Compiled from around the web. These are not UMKC sponsored or sanctioned events)

Rooftop Film at KC Library (Free!): This summer’s Off-the-Wall film series features music-heavy titles from 1984. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy a movie under the stars on the Rooftop Terrace of the Central Library at 14 W. 10th Street. Doors open at 8PM and the show starts at 8:45 on Friday, June 20th. This month’s film is called “Breakin’”. In Breakin', a struggling jazz dancer (Lucinda Dickey) finds inspiration on the streets, thanks to the moves of Adolfo “Shabba-Do” Quinones and Michael “Boogaloo Shrimp” Chambers. Plotwise the film is typical hey-kids-let’s-put-on-a-show, but it provided for millions an introduction into hip-hop culture and music. Check out Ice-T in his first movie role as a rappin’ emcee. http://www.kclibrary.org/event/breakin-1984 Heart of America Shakespeare Festival (Free!): The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival will take place on Tuesday through Sunday from June 17 through July 6, 2014, in Southmoreland Park. There is no performance on July 4; there’s one Monday performance on June 30. Signed performances for the deaf or hearing challenged will be offered on Saturday, June 21 and Tuesday, July 1. Admission is free; donations are encouraged. This year’s production is The Winter’s Tale. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. Pre-show entertainment begins at 6:30 p.m. and includes a variety of performances, including a pre-show parody by Team Shakespeare. The show starts at 8:00 p.m. Bring blankets or lawn chairs. Southmoreland Park is located at the corner of Oak Street and Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd. (47th St.), just two blocks east of the Country Club Plaza and across the street from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri. http://www.kcshakes.org/ USA vs. Portugal Fifa 2014 World Cup (Free!): This Sunday, June 22nd at 5:00PM USA will play Portugal in their second match of the 2014 Fifa World Cup. There are several watch party locations across Kansas City, including a FREE watch party in the KC Live! Announcements Format

Policy for In the Know Announcement Submissions

Beginning 11/11/2013:

1) All submissions must be in JPG format (if the announcement is a flyer). PDF and Word documents must be converted to JPG before being emailed to

[email protected]

2) If the announcement is a text only announcement, please include it in the body of your email. Please use black font only and include a title for your announcement

such as “Emergency Medicine Interest Group”.

3) If an announcement includes incorrect information (such as an incorrect date or time), and that week’s In the Know has already been sent out, a revision for your specific announcement will not be sent out to the school. The only time a correction email

will be sent out is if the error is on the part of Student Affairs (mistyped or forgot to include an announcement).

Submissions which do not meet the new requirements will be returned to sender requesting the appropriate edits. The announcement may then be resubmitted to

[email protected] for inclusion in the In the Know. To submit information for the next Student Affairs Weekly Announcement, send an email

to Niloofar Shahmohammadi at [email protected].
