AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY
A pioneer in electric-powered mobility in France, Northern France rolled out a sweeping program to develop electric cars and recharging infrastructure at the end of 2012.
To ensure the region remains a leader in automaking while preparing for a more eco-friendly future, the Regional Council plans to make Northern France one of the top regions in France for electric cars.
Target: Promote development of the electric car and deploy a regional network of interconnected and interoperable charging stations, encourage electric car purchases, promote the automotive sector, step up research and boost new professional opportunities–becoming a standard-setter in the field. Offer clean, quiet, vibration-free cars that are cheaper to operate, while respecting the environment, reducing dependence on oil, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
TOYOTA MOTOR MANUFACTURING FRANCE At a press conference in September 2012, Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Europe announced that its Onnaing-Valenciennes site had been selected for the production of a small hybrid vehicle.
On this occasion, Mr. Makoto Sano, President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing France, explained the reasons for the choice.
“I would first like to emphasize how proud we are that our site has been chosen. It’s a source of pride for all staff members at Onnaing-Valenciennes. Toyota Motor Manufacturing France will be the first site in France and the second in Europe to produce hybrid electric vehicles, consolidating its place within Toyota’s European manufacturing system.
RENAULT / NISSAN BACKS ELECTRIC VEHICLESSubsidiary MCA in Maubeuge pioneers large-scale production of electric vans.
Already a major presence in Northern France, where it operates four factories, Renault/Nissan has signed a letter of intent with the region for electric vehicles. The agreement provides for the launch of preliminary studies to back a regional plan to develop electric vehicles for personal and business use. Included in the project are the appointment of a project leader for electric vehicles, a review of the region’s electric vehicle fleet, and plans to install recharging facilities. Medee, the competitiveness cluster dedicated to energy-efficient electric powertrains, and transport cluster i-Trans will be providing support, particularly in areas relating to training and technology.
Renault’s Kangoo Express ZE is the first electric van developed by a volume manufacturer for large-scale production. Mass production started in mid-2011.
