support vulnerable populations, provid-ing them with assistance, security and autonomy. The innovation lies in its ability to localise its position in real time, without a dedicated service center. It also holds three preset phone numbers to which it sends text messages with detailed infor-mation about the location of its bearer, and a separate sOs function. Meanwhile, smartphones can view and track the move-ments of the device owner on a map. The random testing phase will begin soon in rome, involving elderly people with senile dementia and teenagers and young people with Down syndrome. For that last group, the equipment will be used to extend their autonomy going from their home to the headquarters of the association financing the experiment.

presented at the most recent Mobile World congress in barcelona, Aridion technology, developed by the English company p2i, will bring tears of joy to the clumsy. Thanks to a coating made from a layer of polymers and applied using ionized gas in a vacuum chamber, liquid and humidity will not oxidize or short-circuit the parts in a device. t ravel from New york to Beijing in two hours? The American com-pany eT3, in partnership with chinese academics, is promising just that. And contrary to what one might think, the journey is

not made in a supersonic aircraft but by train! Well, not just any train. This is a vacuum-packed train propelled by superconducting magnets. In this train of the future, the passenger journeys in a reclining position with five other travelers in an independent capsule five feet (1.5 meters) in diameter. Inserted into a vacuum tube, the train gradually accelerates, reaching up to 375 mph (600 km/h) for short trips or 4,000 mph (6,500 km/h) for intercontinental routes.

Fast and economicalBesides the speed, the project’s designers say that building such a line is 90% less costly than constructing a high-speed train line and four times cheaper than a freeway. Another key point is that electricity expended during acceleration is recovered during braking. In addition to passen-gers, cargo could also pass through the vacuum tube. Fast, safe, cheap and ecological, the vacuum train project – while it still faces technical challenges – offers amazing possibilities for our future.

I n the united states alone, three people visit the emer-gency room every minute due

to asthma attacks. studies show that, on average, three out of every four asthma sufferers (235 million worldwide) fail to use their inhaler correctly. cambridge consultants, a subsidiary of the Altran group, has developed a training inhaler concept which can significantly

improve inhaler technique and bring immediate benefits in terms of treatment efficacy.

Safeguard health at reduced costsThe T-Haler allows asthma patients to check whether they are using their inhaler correctly and to improve their technique. equipped with interactive software, the inhaler is connected wirelessly to a video game-style interface which gives the patient real-time feed-back on three key factors: shaking the inhaler properly, breathing in correctly, and pressing down on the canister timely. During a study, correct device usage went from 20% to 60%, after just three min-utes’ use and without instructions. The T-Haler could help reduce the number of asthma-related visits to the emergency room and the resulting cost to the healthcare system.

When it comes to data security and user safety, these connected systems must function flawlessly and must be pro-tected against external attacks, among other risks. An expert in embedded and critical systems, Altran has designed a “connected vehicle” platform based on an Intel processor. Integrated into the vehicle’s electronic system (cAN bus), it makes the car part of the digital eco-system by providing it with compulsory built-in security. Only certified applica-tions available from an online store may be downloaded and used in the car.

Objective: speedy and superior designsThe platform goes even further, allowing automobile manufacturers and suppliers to rapidly develop demonstrations of connectivity features and ergonomics. In an increasingly com-plex and fast-moving world, automakers have an incentive to incorporate solutions and business mod-els from other industries. In this area, Altran integrator offers its expertise in assembling a set of technologies. Indeed, the automotive industry is

undergoing major changes. To keep up with the lightning speed at which IT is developing, manufacturers must work more and more quickly to provide rele-

vant solutions. Hence the creation of the Genivi Alliance (IvI: In-vehicle Infotain-ment), which aims to encourage the deve-

lives. Take cars, for example. Imagine a car that automatically changes gears based on data provided by a GPs, or that connects to the digital cloud to read passengers their emails or remind them of upcoming appointments… Far from science fiction, this is a real vision of what it means to be “connected.” And it reveals an underlying trend: in 2015, 60% of cars will be connected, and the main vehicle components will be com-posed of electronics.connected to a 4G network, the car has access to an extraordinarily rich and “social” digital ecosystem: vehicles and passengers are linked to a limitless universe. Infotainment (information + entertainment) has already made this

The electronic flight bag is designed to replace the classic airline-pilot flight case, a hitherto heavy and cumbersome item. Although available on the computer, the electronic bag has nevertheless struggled to win over pilots. Altran is therefore working on a tablet-compatible version of this technology to make it more user-friendly. This example illustrates our work to understand how new technologies come to be used and socially accepted.

What are embedded systems? embedded systems are a combination of electronics and software inside machines or devices. this covers a wide range of applications from consumer-based technologies such as those in mobile phones, to safety-critical applications such as avionics or railway signalling.

We’re starting to hear about intelligent systems on the market. What does it mean to you? Intelligent systems are a new generation of embedded systems that are more powerful and complex, often facing safety and security issues together with advanced human interfaces. Much of the new intelligence arises from connecting these previously stand-alone embedded systems to each other and the internet. with the rise of intelligent systems, altran’s vision is to be the global integrator of the embedded world.

Why do you think altran can position itself as an integrator? altran has an in-depth knowledge of the needs of each industry, but also understands the wide range of embedded technologies. this enables altran to build complete industry solutions. we have proven our capabilities with prototypes such as Connected Car for automotive, but also in other areas with electronic Flight bag in aerospace, and technologies for consumer, medical or energy.

strong earthquake initiated the auto-matic shutdown of three of the six reactors operat-ing on 11 March, 2011, at the Fuku-

shima-daiichi nuclear power plant in japan. Then a 15-metre wave engulfed the plant’s protective wall and devas-tated its emergency electrical systems. Without power, the reactors heated up, leading to fusion in units 1 to 3. To avoid the total destruction of the reactors, the operator decided to use seawater to cool them down and to release hydrogen to lower pressure in the tanks. A massive discharge of radioactive pollutants into the water and air, in addition to infiltra-tion in the soil, was an unavoidable con-sequence. Only one person died on-site, of cardiac arrest. While the disaster took a heavy toll, it was nevertheless much smaller than chernobyl in 1986, when 30 died of acute radiation syndrome and

AvOIDING THe WOrsTManagement of the japanese crisis suc-ceeded in preventing the worst because nuclear industry executives worldwide, under the auspices of the International Atomic energy Agency (IAeA), had learned from Three Mile Island (review of security procedures, monitoring the status of the plant in real time to apply the most appropriate security measures) and chernobyl (mandatory use of passive and active safety systems). Moreover, the exemplary solidarity and rapid response of the sector’s global actors allowed them to limit the environmental impacts of this disaster. For example, 200 Areva experts and 60 veolia experts from France, Ger-many, the united states, japan and swe-den mobilized in record time – 2 months – to build a system capable of processing up to 50 tons of contaminated water per hour.

This industry will probably move toward improving investment protection. With utilities, they

are the most apt to bring about that change. Utilities want to protect their investments, and designers want to ensure that they make good products. We are not going to see many new designs; the process takes years and costs billions of dollars. Redesigning is not a simple option.

There is a very steady trend in US public opinion towards considering nuclear energy

as a very safe and effective means of generating power. This is extremely important because the general public invests in utility stocks, and they want to know that their money is secure. They are not going to have their money invested in areas they consider to be speculative or potentially dangerous.

If you need to sell your plant and are looking to maintain good cooperation in the long

term, a joint venture may be a much better solution. In that case, you will not simply transfer technology, but develop it together at the same time. For example, China and France have launched a joint venture and will be working together to build plants in third party countries.

FLeXBLue: HIGH-TecH NucLeAr GOes DeePconceived in France by dcNS, Flexblue involves immersing a small nuclear power unit (50 to 250 MWe) in an extremely stable underwater environment 200 to 325 feet (60 to 100 meters) below sea level. This will provide a simple and safe way for countries new to nuclear power or isolated islands to use this kind of energy.

altran is currently mobilising 900 nuclear-industry consultants working in seven countries: the united kingdom, spain, belgium, the united states, China, France and India. this activity is set to grow significantly in the coming years, as regulatory authorities are reviewing standards post-Fukushima. last March, the us nuclear regulatory Commission issued new requirements to better protect facilities, particularly against flooding. other countries where altran is working on these subjects will be appointed one by one in the coming months. altran is also one of the few players in the sector to specialise in instrumentation without producing equipment itself.

FuKusHIMA: A GLOBAL IMPAcTBruised by the atom, japan took the precautionary measure of stopping the activity of its nuclear power plants. The last operating reactor out of 54 has been stopped in May 2012. Meanwhile, certain countries – mainly in europe – have cho-sen to put an end to their nuclear pro-grams altogether (Germany, Italy, swit-zerland, sweden, spain); others have reassessed plant security and acted accordingly, but continue to trust in this technology (china, russia, united states, France). Fukushima will also strengthen collabo-ration among nuclear safety agencies. This will lead to the construction of safer nuclear plants design to run for up to 60 years. countries new to nuclear power and who have these plants on their soil will receive proper support and high-level security training.

NucLeAr: MAjOr ADvANTAGesDespite considerable environmental impact in the event of an accident, and public distrust for this energy source, nuclear power does have its share of advantages. unlike solar or wind power, it provides energy continuously with-out depending on external parameters. Although it produces waste that is not treatable and is difficult to store, nuclear energy does not release the carbon dioxide responsible for global warming. Furthermore, unlike natural gas – whose prices are indexed to oil –,

signed to prevent leaks; automatic cool-ing systems have been reinforced, etc. everything has been done to bring risk close to zero. even the terrorist threat has been taken into consideration, as reactors are now designed to withstand the impact of a fighter plane. Finally, the fourth generation of nuclear reac-tors is paving the way for even safer and more efficient architecture. china is interested in molten salt reactors using thorium. And for good reason: with this technology, the Fukushima and chernobyl accidents would not have happened. supercritical water reactors and rapid neuron sodium-cooled reactors are also being studied, with the goal of reducing or eliminating the waste produced.could these be solutions pending the advent of the european ITer program’s research on thermonuclear fusion?

uranium prices should remain stable for the next several decades. In addi-tion, the cost of producing electricity through nuclear power is relatively low and allows countries with few natural resources to remain energy indepen-dent. Now all we must do is guarantee the security of the reactors: the major challenge for the new generation of plants.

WHAT Is THe FuTure OF NucLeAr POWer?Designed in the 1940s to supply pluto-nium for military programs, the archi-tecture of nuclear plants has evolved very little since then. However, while the method has not changed, security has made great strides. Third-gener-ation plants incorporate redundant safety systems: the tanks and the way they are protected have been rede-

the future for many solutions in mobility. The price/performance ratio for energy storage systems is decreasing. Fossil fuel costs are rising. Pollution and cO2 emissions are more and more relevant for both individuals and governments. These facts point to a clear design success scenario.> javier de rocafort: It is one way to create zero-emissions vehicles, and one of the focus areas of our partnership. However, Quimera and Altran are also looking into other technologies offering a clean alternative to the traditional combustion engine.

What are the main achievements of Altran and Quimera so far?> javier de rocafort: In 30 months, we have been able to set up a long-term and reliable network of highly committed partners and to deploy successful r&D projects that have generated massive media, B2B and general public exposure and awareness. Quimera’s participation in many international fairs, conferences and public street contributed significantly to changing the common view about green technologies.> Alfonso Martinez: Our common r&D platform allowed for the development of several all-electric racing vehicles. We started our collaboration in the latter development stages of the All-electric GT, and now we are fully involved in the next generation projects, mainly the AeGT-evo2 and the AeGF concept cars.

Where are Altran and Quimera heading now?> Alfonso Martinez: Altran will be the main technology developer for the upcoming Quimera responsible racing championship. The recent presentation

A reva Transnuclear provides ser-vices to the entire nuclear fuel processing chain: transporta-

tion, warehousing, parts handling, etc.The role of the structural Analyses Group that I head is to verify that all the equipment we use meets our require-ments in terms of functional design and inlicensing. For over four years, we have called on Altran India teams to perform simulations and structural calculations to demonstrate that these requirements are met when the parts and machines are designed. We have established strong, trusting relationships with Altran, and the professionalism of their teams has proved precious: in the world of nuclear energy, we cannot accept any compromises when it comes to quality and safety. Plus, our contacts know how to meet deadlines and work extremely hard to do so.

M y job is to pilot and conduct calculations, analyses and quality control work for our client Areva

Transnuclear. I also interface with the Areva Transnuclear teams. Managing nuclear waste involves overcoming a number of technical challenges. In particular, the design of the containers and associated components requires that we constantly seek optimal quality. each part that we design is therefore an opportunity to learn a tremendous amount. In short, it is highly technical work but offers great professional satisfaction. It is also gratifying that our clients recognise and appreciate the results of our efforts.

I am responsible for digitally simulating the mechanical behavior of nuclear waste containers in different transport conditions. These simulations can help

anticipate any problems that would arise in real-world situations and tackle them virtually. We are thus less dependant on physical tests.We have been working with Areva Transnuclear in this area for several years; over time, true partnerships have been forged with this client. Our contacts are very demanding when it comes to assuring the quality of the work submitted and respecting deadlines, but we are given the means to meet these requirements. Before starting to work for Areva Transnuclear, I took a training course that allowed me to master the company’s quality policies.
