NH YOUTH FIRESETTER REPORTING

Each year in the United States fires that are set by youths account for a large amount of property

2018 ARSON AWARENESS WEEK May 6-12

Each year for Arson Awareness Week (AAW) the US Fire Administration gathers and shares

information to raise awareness of arson or youth firesetting and provide fire service professionals

with strategies to combat these problems within their community This year the National Arson

Awareness (AAW) focus is on ldquoReducing Arson at Vacant and Abandoned Buildingsrdquo Arson in

vacant and abandoned buildings is a dangerous combination for both the general public and the

firefighters who battle these incidences

Check out this free USFA AAW webinar by clicking the blue webinar box There you will learn

bullThe unique characteristics of vacant and abandoned structures and how they

contribute to the ways these structures often burn

bullThe special challenges in investigating these fires

bullThe differences between an abandoned building and a vacant building

bullAn alternative to plywood for boarding up vacant and abandoned structures

bullActivities a community can do to reduce the negative impact associated with

vacant and abandoned structures

The NH State Fire Marshalrsquos Office recognizes that this is a large undertaking for some communities

and would like to encourage fire departments and assisting agencies to work together to

participate in an Arson Awareness Week Community Arson Prevention Board-Up and Clean Up

Project This initiative would be comprised of a community clean-up and securing abandoned and

vacant homes which are potential arson targets and could be completed during Arson

Awareness Week month or as a yearlong initiative Please contact Amy McLaughlin at

AmyMcLaughlindosnhgov if you would like assistance

with raising awareness or conducting outreach with your
