Perfa 33 Acting I: Principles of PerformanceBOTH Artistic Analysis and Creative Practice
An introduction to the theory, history, and styles of realistic acting with emphasis on personalization, script analysis, and the dynamics of performance. No prerequisites.
Perfa 01 Perceiving the Performing ArtsArtistic Analysis
Professional artists in the fields of dance, music and theatre introduce students to the fundamental concepts of their respective disciplines. Students go to Bay Area performances in each art form studied. No prerequisites.
Perfa 35 Theatre Masterpieces: Western Drama(0.5 credit)
Discussion and analysis of masterworks of dramatic literature. No prerequisites.
Perfa 42 Introduction to Technical Theatre(0.5 credit), Creative Practice
Covers the basics of the theatrical production process, welcoming students with little or no experience to the world “behind the scenes.” No prerequisites.
Perfa 50 Interactive TheatreALL the following: Artistic Analysis, Creative Practice, The Common Good, Community Engagement
An introduction for actors and non-actors to the performance practice and underlying philosophy (“Theatre of the Oppressed”) of the radical theatre-maker Augusto Boal. No prerequisites.
Perfa 162 DirectingArtistic Analysis and Creative Practice designations will be sought
Offers a hands-on investigation of the art of directing for the stage. Prerequisites may be waived with instructor permission.

Check out these great 0.25 credit courses in Theatre: Perfa 37-01 Stage CombatCore Credit: AU, Creative Practice
This course will cover the basics of unarmed stage combat while stressing safety, partnership and telling the story of the fight. No prerequisites.
Perfa 37-02 Musical Theatre/CabaretCore Credit: AU, Creative Practice
Supported by both a singing and an acting coach, students will explore the character behind the song lyric, and learn to make expressive physical choices connecting sung “thoughts” to space, image and listener. No prerequisites.
Perfa 47 Lighting Design for DanceCore Credit: AU, Creative Practice
In this course, students learn the basics of lighting technology and design for dance. Students enrolled in this course develop all designs for the fall mainstage dance concert. No prerequisites.
Perfa 142 Technical Theatre PracticumCore Credit: AU, Creative Practice
Quarter, half, or full credit is available for participation as a member of the stage crew running Performing Arts mainstage productions. Prerequisite may be waived with consent of instructor.

Advising comments/suggestions: This advising plan does not include the Foreign Language Requirement, which varies from student to student. Freshmen interested in Performance and Theatre Studies are also encouraged to take Perfa 37 Acting Lab, a free .25 credit course which counts toward the major or minor. In Fall 2016 we are offering Stage Combat and Musical Theatre/Cabaret. In Spring 2017 the topic is TBD. Majors take four (.25 x 4) Acting Labs over the course of four years; the topic varies semester by semester. Perfa 132 (Play in Production) and Perfa 142 (Theatre Production Practicum) are open to freshmen, and both fulfill a major requirements. (Majors are required to accrue 1.0 credits in Perfa 132 and .50 units in Perfa 142 before graduation.) Students may enroll for .25, .5 or 1.0 credits in any semester for work on the mainstage production; concurrent enrollment in the prerequisite for Perfa 142—Perfa 42—is suggested.
