A Search for Her Tribe: Susan Cheever’s Shocking Memoir

New York: Simon Shuster, 1999. 192 pages.

Available in Santa Cruz Public Library.

Born in an alcohol drenched world peopled by a famous father and the rich and famous of

New York City and San Francisco, Susan Cheever had it all: talent, wealth, beauty,

opportunity. In the decades spanning 1970 and 1999, her Midas touch seemed magic. And

for years, it was.

Hers was a world where writers and editors pounded keys by day, producing the best

contemporary books of the day which garnered high praise in the literary world. But by

night, as soon as it was a respectable hour, they began their prandial cocktails. As a child

Susan witnessed lavish parties, with martinis swirling in glasses as elegant hosts plied their

guests with liquor. Once, at one of her parents’ lively gatherings, the booze that had been

stocked in plenty ran out, and Susan noted how quickly her mother sent for reinforcements.

God forbid a party lag for lack of gin. And these were the beautiful people, the highly

successful writers and editors and agents of the elite literary world—the crowd, indeed, to

which Susan desperately wanted to belong. Her ticket: drink with them. They became her

tribe, and she had no idea that they were all drinking themselves to death...

Her acclaimed writer father, John Cheever, wrote a famous story called "The Sorrows of Gin."

And he knew it well. Most acclaimed for his fiction in the 50s and 60s, Cheever became his

daughter's mentor. He had been a drunk when Susan was born. One rainy afternoon when a

teenage Susan was weeping in "devastating pain" after losing her "First Love," her father

offered no sage advice. He merely poured her what was surely his elixir—and soon would

become hers: a tall frosted glass of gin and tonic. Susan blithely noted that it “swept /me/

away from my pain.”

And that wouldn't be the first time.

Her book will not surprise many alcoholics but it gave me pause to see a life laid bare, and be

so starkly reminded of my own drinking days. The best thing about the book is its clarity and

detail. She spares us little, and the chronological organization carefully peels back the onion

of each of her three marriages, as well as recounting her many geographics (for years she

traveled back and forth from New York and one married lover to San Francisco to another.)

“One day I slept with three men,” she wrote.

And she remained clueless, as she continued to experience tremendous success in her field.

She stayed clueless even after attending multiple AA meetings with her father, who

embraced AA seven years before he died (he went to a meeting every day). She wrote: “I

loved the meetings, the way people told their stories with such honesty.

As riveting as she found the meetings, she remained aloof, always looking at the differences

and never the similarities. For example, she never had a DUI, lost a job, lost a husband or

family, never hid bottles. By constantly reminding herself that “alcoholics were people who

had heart attacks and delirium tremens the way my father did. I thought that alcoholics were

told again and again by their friends and doctors that they should stop drinking. No one had

ever said much about my drinking.”

This was her father’s tribe, not hers.

After his death she continued walking on the edge: Sober, drunk, sober, drunk, a new lover,

drunk, an old lover, new husband, drunk, new baby, sober, then drunk, and on. Susan still

maintained: “I was hardly an alcoholic . . .if anyone had a problem it was Warren” (current

husband). And she did an intervention on him!

Yes, Susan does get sober. She embraces AA at long last, and acknowledges years of

searching. She writes little about her deep-seated faith, saying that is intensely private and

beyond her ability to describe. But she does present her story with an understand flair, and

readers will surely rejoice when they sense the serenity which pervades the final pages of this

engrossing book.

No New Motions were made. VISITOR: Monterey Bay Area Round-Up Chairperson – Walter (831) 521-1245 – Looking for everyone to get involved in 2016 – 2017. Would like to have their Kick-Off Speaker to be from Santa Cruz. MBAR AA Conference is scheduled for Labor Day Weekend at the Monterey Plaza, September 1,2 & 3, 2017. The 2016 AA Conference was set aside for Web-site Upgrades and to improve Attenance. A request is made for volunteers to bring treats to the next Council meeting, help break down the room and help set up the room next month.
