  • FOREWORD.

In purs uan ce of our pnlicv of wid l'll illg t he scn JW of llw festival we have add ed t hree 11 ew classes to t he curn:JJt syllabus. There is now a separa te vocal solo for girls under 14 , and an extra string class has been inserted between the two previous age groups.

With the addition of a class for the :.V1ezzo-Soprano, we now offer a compet ition in eac h of the six principal voice ranges, and advantage has been taken of the opportunity to select t est pieces on a level with t he major National F estivals. The competition fo r the Steers Cup fo r the Solo Champion-ship will be decided between the winners of these six classes who will be expected to repeat t he t est pieces before a panel of judges during t he evening session.

Of the pan el of adj udicators, two of t hem require no introduct ion to Brownh ills. Miss E lsie Davies judged the elocution classes here last year when she won universal approval for the mann er in which she spared no effor t to make her aclj udica tion entertaining and he! pful.

Mr. Stanley :VJayes, organist of St. Werburgh 's Church. Derby , has trained and conducted massed choirs in church broadcast services. He is a musician and teacher of wide experience and repute and an adjudication -from him is of very material value to both pupil and teacher. His rdurn to om fes ti, ·al this year is anticipated with appreciation.

:VIr. Frank Odell of London is a newcomer to Brownhill s and his only pre Yious appearance locally as an adjudicator was at the recent Tamworth Festival. Mr. Odell st udied under Plunkett Greene and later toured ext ensively abroad with the Westminster Singers (The ·Cathedral Male Voice Quartet te). His clear informative sty le and entertaining platform manner will ensure him the same populati ty he re as he already enjoys at other festival centres.

Mr. Mervyn Williams, A.R.C. M., L.T.C. L. , is also a newcomer to Brownhills. He is t he Director of· Music at Repton School ; this and his previous experience put him in an unique position to carry .put the duties of an adj udicator , which he does with authority and distinction. }lr. Williams' adj udications are a model of info rmativl' insight and impartiality and h e will enj oy a ready welcome fro m t he critical fac tion at this fes tival. ·

Pr izes and t rophies will be presented at the close of each session and we have heen fo rtunate in persuading till : fo llowing personalities to undertake t his task.
