IT’S MY OPINION AND I HAVE ONE!

Hello!
I hope everyone had a wonderful week this past week. So it is August! Yep summer is almost over, school is starting and why not just call it what it is, it is Christmas! The summer just flew by didn’t it? In just a few short weeks we are going to be having our parish picnic and then school will actually be starting. I hope all of you have had a pleasant summer to this point.
This weekend is the 18th Sunday of Ordinary time and we hear of the bringing down of manna from the desert. When we think of how the Israelites were so concerned about where there nourishment would come from, they completely forgot about the real nourishment, which is God filling their hearts with His love. The nourishment that gives them life forever. I frequently wonder how often we forget about this in our own lives? It is easy to look on the outside in and say, I would never act the way the Israelites do. However, if we take an honest look at ourselves I think we can all say that is not true!
As you drive home today I ask you to think about the following:
Do you believe like Moses in “the bread that the LORD has given you toe eat?”
Do you believe that the “bread of angels” is sent to you in abundance?
Do you receive the Eucharist and Reconciliation as often as you are able?
What does it mean, “put on the new self?”
How do you become enabled to believe in and be one with Jesus?
“I am a dwelling place. I am not alone. In the secret depths of my poor human substance is the presence of God. Not a God who is solitary but a God who is Trinity, a God who is love. A God who is Father, a God who is Son, A God who is Holy Spirit. But a God made one by love. And a God whose love enables me to become one with him: ‘that you may be one as you, Father, are in me, and I am in you, I pray that they may be one in us, that the world may believe that you sent me’ (John 17:21). I believe that no moment exists for man that is more important, more beautiful, more dramatic, more decisive, more radical than the moment when he becomes aware of – or, rather, ‘lives’ – this reality.” (Carlo Corretto)

The Lord Gave Them Bread from Heaven
This weekend we are singing a psalm which has chanted verses: The Lord gave them bread from Heaven. Chanted psalm verses is an ancient practice of the Catholic Church. Michel Guimont composed the music for this weekend’s setting. It can be found in our Gather hymnal at # 73.
Michel Guimont is a native to Quebec whose music
has been available to the Catholic Church in the US
since 1991. Currently he is Music Director at the
Cathedral of Ottawa. He holds degrees in
psychology and music composition.

After the sign of the loaves and fishes,
John began the discourse on the Bread
of Life that will last in the readings for
the next four Sundays. In typical Johan-
nine fashion, the dialogue worked on
two levels, 1) between Jesus and his audience and 2)
between John's community and the synagogues influ-
enced by the Pharisees. In the case of the level two,
there was a tug-of-war between a spirituality focused
on the present and one focused on the past. Between
one centered on the activity of God now, and one
concerned primarily about God's action in the history.
Between presence and tradition . Of course, God's
action in the past and the present cannot be sepa-
rated. But the f minds of people needed a hook, a
vantage point to see God working. Time was a perfect
starting point.
The crowd that was fed sought Jesus for more
satisfaction. If Jesus fed them once, he would feed
them again. With bread. With preaching about the
Kingdom. With insight. With signs of God's power.
But, Kingdom was not about personal satisfaction. It
was about faith in Jesus. The crowd focused upon
what they could get from Jesus. Not what they could
give to Jesus. This difference between take vs. give set
up the tension and misunderstanding in the passage.
The bread the people received would spoil. But, the
Bread that gave eternal life stood before them. This
man, this Jesus, was the One God placed his seal of
approval upon. God empowered his Son and his Son's
ministry.
Jesus did not say he would give them bread. He
stated that, in his divinity, HE was the Bread of Life.
To feed from him, people would have to come and to
trust him. Then, they would be truly satisfied.
For John's audience, of course, only the Christian
community held up the Christ as one to be worshiped as
God. So, the only way to come and trust was through
that community. This was the challenge Christianity lay
before its Jewish competitors. The activity of God was
present in the community, because the Christ was pre-
sent. While what God did was important, what God was
doing now was more important.
How is God active in your life now?
How does the Bible and tradition help that insight?
Do you know someone
who has never been baptized?
who has talked about becoming a Catholic?
who hasn’t completed the Sacraments of Initiation?
who wants to be updated in the Catholic Faith?
Then invite that person to contact me!
We are forming a group
for the Adult Faith Inquiry,
to begin on Wednesday, September 12.
Catholics make up 99% of the church.
Our witness to the role of Jesus in our life
affects others greater than any Papal declaration
or slick marketing campaign.
Invite someone to come to know Jesus
in the community of faith.

In today’s Gospel (John 6: 24-35) Jesus tells us that he is the Bread of Life. “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” When Jesus says this he is talking about nourishment for our hearts and our spirits. The first thing we might think of ,when Jesus says this , is that he is the Bread of Life in the Eucharist. When we receive communion we are indeed nourished by Jesus in a special way. But there are also other moments when our hearts and our spirits are nourished by Jesus. When we pray to Jesus, read the Bible, or do good things for others we are nourished by Jesus. Sometimes we forget where to turn when our hearts or our spirits are hungry. Jesus is the person to whom we can turn.

MIDDLESCHOOL NEWS
Greetings and Salutations,
Happy August!
This week we hear Jesus tell us he is the bread of life, and that whoever comes to him will never be hungry. Bread is our most basic, staple food. Sometimes we find ourselves eating bread three meals a day, in the form of bagels, or pancakes during breakfast, sandwiches or pizza dough at lunchtime, pasta or rolls at dinner. Every nation of the world has their own form of bread in its cuisine: rice, pasta, loaves, tortillas, pitas (yum), couscous. Bread is filling and nourishing. This is true of Jesus, too. He is there for us at all times of the day, and he came for everyone in the world. He fills us and gives us the nourishment we need. This week each time we eat any type of bread, say a quick prayer in your heart thanking God for the gift of Jesus.
Religious Formation Registration for the 2012/2013 year is underway. We have registration forms available in the Gathering area. Our classes resume the week of September 17th.
Thanks for listening, have a great week everyone and enjoy the SONshine!

My husband has high-jacked my bulletin article! At least it is good stuff. Check out the article below. This course changed our lives and can do the same for you. Single, newly married, married for 10. 20. 30 years…this class will benefit everyone! Excited to see you there! This Fall, St. John Neumann is going to be offering a great, life-changing program. Along with asking parishioners for their generosity in financially contributing to various ministries in both the parish and outside activities, we are going to offer a program that helps parishioners with their own finances. We've all seen the numbers and statistics about how families are struggling financially to prosper. 70% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and money fights and money problems are the #1 cause of divorce in our society. So we are going to show families how to win with their money. Starting Thursday, September 13th, we are going to be offering a program called Financial Peace University. This is a 9-week course taught by Dave Ramsey who is a financial author, radio host, television personality, and motivational speaker. Each week's session will be 1.5 hours in length. There will be a 45 minute video lesson taught by Dave on video followed by small group discussions to talk about the lesson that was just presented. Millions of families have taken this course around the country and we are happy to bring it to St. John Neumann. Financial Peace University participants have averaged lowering debts by $5,300 and increasing savings by $2,700 over the course of the program and have clear plans to pay off debt, prepare themselves for retirement, kid’s college funds, and all the other financial goals that families have. There will be a free preview of the class after every mass on August 18th and 19th. If you have any questions, please contact Aaron Wilkerson at 313-598-2398 or email at [email protected]
