Yet we receive an insight into the core of what it means to be a Christian – that Christ is formed in us. The late Eugene Peterson in The Message writes this same phrase as “un- til Christ’s life becomes visible in your lives.” Is there something “visible” about Christ’s presence when we live in conformity to Him? Of course there is. That presence is “seen” through who we are – our actions, values, and attitudes. We are grateful for each of you who sup- port our mission to partner with churches to provide Christ-centered, life-changing biblical teaching. We are able to partly spon- sor the Hawai’i Bible Conference through the generosity of the Ada Lum Fund. This is the fund that began by honoring the life of teaching and service that Ada Lum gave to the churches in Hawai’i through her ministry with BIH. Ada Lum was my Bible teacher and mentor when I was in middle school at what was then called Stevenson Intermediate School. I looked forward to her Bible teaching every week, and would greet her on the side- walk when her car pulled up every Tuesday afternoon in front of the band room. I looked forward to passing out her teaching notes, hearing her teach, and most of all, hearing God’s word being brought alive. I’ll never forget her investment in our modest group of young people trying to understand the Bible. Her legacy continues in so many ways. I believe that the IN THE WORD conference will continue Ada’s commitment to teaching the Bible with integrity and clarity. We are blessed with many generous donors to BIH. Thank you to those who support BIH through GIVE ALOHA, Foodland’s annual community matching gifts program. This year we received $3,155.00 from our donors, which increased to $3,845.93 with the addition of grants from Foodland and Western Union. We invite your continued support through this program. In writing to the churches in Galatia, the apostle Paul writes “My little children, for whom I am again in the pain of childbirth

until Christ is formed in you” (Gal. 4:19). This is a stark reference to the pain of labor in childbirth as if Paul has real knowledge of such pain (!). But he rightly acknowledges that the process of Christ being fashioned into the hearts of people can sometimes be a laborious enterprise, even painful at times. Yet we receive an insight into the core of what it means to be a Christian – that Christ is formed in us. The late Eugene Peterson in The Message writes this same phrase as “un-til Christ’s life becomes visible in your lives.” Is there something “visible” about Christ’s presence when we live in conformity to Him? Of course there is. That presence is “seen” through who we are – our actions, values, and attitudes. As we live by the Spirit, which is another of Paul’s teachings in Galatians, we experience a need for each other. We are all strengthened and encouraged as we learn to rely on and support each other. How do we do this? With the always faithful word that comes from God.

When the angel visits Mary to proclaim to her that she will conceive and give birth to Jesus, her response was a question, “How will this be?” The angel responds with a closing phrase, “For no word from God will ever fail.” What confidence in God’s word! The unfailing word of God. It is this word from the angel that imparts faith to the young virgin. This is what God’s word does in each of our lives – imparts faith. To assure us when we doubt, and to encourage us when we are in despair. God’s word, the Bible, is the faithful witness that never fails us.

With this in mind, and in alignment with the mission of BIH, we and the Kroc Center of Hawai’i are sponsoring a Hawai’i Bible Conference called “IN THE WORD – Encounter, Empower & Enrich.” The date will

be Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the Kroc Center Ballroom in Ewa Beach. Please reserve the date now and register today with a friend. For one day we will engage with God’s word with Bible teachers that will help us to en-counter the power and truth of the Bible.

We are grateful for each of you who sup-port our mission to partner with churches to provide Christ-centered, life-changing biblical teaching. We are able to partly spon-sor the Hawai’i Bible Conference through the generosity of the Ada Lum Fund. This is the fund that began by honoring the life of teaching and service that Ada Lum gave to the churches in Hawai’i through her ministry with BIH. Ada Lum was my Bible teacher and mentor when I was in middle school at what was then called Stevenson Intermediate School. I looked forward to her Bible teaching every week, and would greet her on the side-walk when her car pulled up every Tuesday afternoon in front of the band room.

NT012“Jesus is Lord!” The Book of ColossiansPastor John Honold

No other book of the New Testament sets forth more fully or defends the universal Lordship of Jesus Christ more fully. Paul shares Christ’s Lordship in three ways: (1) Jesus Christ is Lord over all Creation; (2) Jesus is preeminent in the Church as its Creator and Savior; (3) Jesus is Supreme in Salvation.

“Jesus is Lord” is the church’s earliest confession. Reinforce your understanding of His Lordship in our eight-week study of Colossians.

Administrative Fee: $35 / $40 January 9 – February 27, 2019 (8 weeks)Wednesdays, 12 – 1 pm First Hawaiian Center (26th fl. Conference Rms.) 999 Bishop St., Honolulu (No parking validation available)

CNS301Toward Effective Lay Counseling in the Local ChurchDr. Mike Dugal

Every Christian is called to a ministry of encouraging and helping others, especially those in the household of faith. We do not need more conferences and books on esoteric issues of counseling theory; we need to challenge, encourage, and assist members of local churches to get on with the job of one-anothering: love one another, bear one another’s burden, pray for one another.(Dr. Larry Crabb)

Administrative Fee: $40 / $45 January 9 – February 27, 2019 (8 weeks) Wednesdays, 6:30 – 8:30 pm The Salvation Army Kroc Center 91-3257 Kualaka‘i Parkway, Ewa Beach

OT006 Joshua: Advancing into God’s PromisesPastor Ty Tamasaka

Why should we read the book of Joshua today in the twenty-first century? Joshua is an ancient book of war, conquest, and bar-baric slaughter. Aren’t we more civilized and peaceful than that? The book of Joshua has amazing applications for today. There’s much more to the Christian life than simply being saved. In John 10:10, Jesus speaks of an “abundant life.” While Christians have been freed from the grip of sin, many have yet to enter into God’s promises. We will explore the book of Joshua and gain insight into en-tering God’s promises with a strong emphasis on personal application. Recommended Reading: Glory Days: Trusting the God who Fights for You, Max Lucado.
